- TS058-008 Ringfort - rath
Description
In level pasture with a barrow located 200m to the NE. Circular raised area (diam. 20m) defined by an internal low broad earthen bank (overall Wth 4.45m; Wth at top 2m; int. H 0.15m; ext. H 0.75m). At the external base of the bank is a wide flat-bottomed fosse (Wth at base 2m; D 0.3m) and a low broad external earthen bank (overall Wth 4.45m; Wth at top 2m; int. H 0.6m; ext. H 0.3m). There is a modern break (Wth 6m) in the internal bank at E. The external bank is best preserved E-S being very low and difficult to discern S-E. A modern ENE-WSW orientated field drain extends to the external base of the external bank at SE and a portion (Wth 2m) of the external bank has been removed by a drain at WSW. A break (Wth 4m) in the internal bank at W, with traces of a causeway across the fosse, marks the position of the original entrance. The interior is level and clear of overgrowth. Description
In level wet improved pasture. Circular area (diam. 25.5m) defined by a low earthen scarp (Wth 2.1m; H 0.35m). At the external base of the scarped edge is the first fosse (Wth at base 3.7m; D 0.3m), the first earthen bank (Wth at top 2m; overall Wth 4.2m; int. H 0.1m; ext. H 0.4m), a second fosse (Wth at base 1.8m; D 0.8m) and a second outer earthen bank (Wth at top 1.6m; overall Wth 4.3m; int. H 0.9m; ext. H 0.1m). The first fosse and bank low in profile difficult to trace at ground level NW-NE. There is a modern break (Wth 8m) in the first bank at E. The second outer bank is very low and difficult to trace at ground level N-E. There is a modern break (Wth 2m) in the first bank at ESE. There are two possible entrance features, either of which may be original. The first is at E where there is a break (Wth 4m) in the first bank with a corresponding break (Wth 6m) in the second outer bank. The second is at WSW where there is a break (Wth 3m) in the first bank with a corresponding break (Wth 4m) in the second outer bank. Description
In low-lying gently undulating wet pasture. Circular raised area (diam. c. 25m) defined by an earthen scarp (Wth c. 3m; H c. 1.5m). At the external base of the scarp is a fosse (Wth at base c. 4m; D 0.1-0.3m) and an external earthen bank (Wth at top 3m; overall Wth 5.5m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 0.3m). The external bank encloses the ringfort NE-SW and is best preserved NE-S being very degraded and barely visible at ground level S-SW. A modern field boundary lies along the line of the external bank NW-NE. A modern NNE-WSW orientated field drain links to the fosse at S. The original entrance is not recognisable. Description
In level wet pasture. Slightly raised circular area (diam. 22m) defined by a gently sloping earthen scarp (Wth 1.2m; H 0.6m) with a flat-bottomed external fosse (Wth at base 2.3m; overall Wth 4.4m; D 0.25m). From NW-NE a modern E-W orientated field boundary lies along the line of the fosse abutting the external base of the scarp at N. The original entrance is not recognisable. Description
On a very slight S-facing slope in low-lying wet pasture with a barrow (TS058-012002-) located at its centre and another immediately to the W (TS058-012001-). Circular area (diam. 16m) defined by an earthen scarp (Wth 2.4m; H 0.4m). At the external base of the scarp is the first fosse (Wth at base 1.6m; D 0.05-0.2m) and the first earthen bank (Wth at top 0.8m; overall Wth 2.8m; H 0.1m), a second fosse (Wth at base 1.4m; D 0.05m), a second earthen bank (Wth at top 1.7m; overall Wth 3.9m; H 0.2m), a third fosse (Wth at base 1.1m; D 0.05m) and a third outer earthen bank (Wth at top 3.1m; overall Wth 5.3m; H 0.25m). The second fosse, second bank, third fosse and outer bank enclose the ring-barrow NW-NE only and are not visible elsewhere at ground level. The external edge of the barrow (TS058-012001-) immediately to the W of this monument lies 1.9m outside the external base of the first bank and across the line of the absent outer banks and fosses WSW-NW. Description
On a very slight S-facing slope in low-lying wet pasture with a barrow (TS058-012----) immediately to the E. Circular area (diam. 18m) defined by an earthen scarp (Wth 1.8-2.2m; H 0.5m). At the external base of the scarp is a fosse (Wth at base 1.4m; D 0.1m) and an external earthen bank (Wth at top 1.7-3.2m; overall Wth 4.2-5.2m; H 0.1-0.4m). The barrow (TS058-012001-) immediately to the E of this monument lies 1.9m outside the external base of the bank with the E edge of this barrow extending across the line of the absent outer banks and fosses of the neighbouring barrow. A modern entrance (Wth 8m) cuts through the external bank at N with a causeway across the fosse. The interior is level and clear of overgrowth. Description
In the centre of a larger barrow (TS058-012----) in low-lying wet pasture on a very slight S-facing slope with a second large barrow (TS058-012001-) immediately to the W. Circular area (diam. 6m) defined by an earthen bank (Wth at top 0.4m; overall Wth 1.2m; int. H 0.15m; ext. H 0.1m). The bank is best preserved SW-N and E-SE where the profile is low but consistent being barely visible elsewhere. Description
On top of a slight rise, at W end of a low E-W orientated ridge, in gently undulating wet pasture. Natural ground level slopes down gently from the monument SE-SW. Views are good in all directions. Slightly raised circular area (diam at base 21m) defined by a broad shallow fosse (Wth at base 2m; overall Wth 4m; D 0.1m). The fosse is largely silted up and barely visible S-W and is completely infilled and not visible at ground level ESE-S. Description
In a clearing in forestry, coniferous planting comes within 8-10m of the outer bank/counterscarp. In flat marshy terrain. A raised circular area (diam. 24m N-S) enclosed by a bank (Wth at crest 2m; overall Wth 6.2m; H above int. 0.45m; H above fosse 1.4m); broad, flat-bottomed, water-logged fosse (Wth 5.7m; D 1.05m) and broad, low outer bank (Wth at crest 4m; overall Wth 6m; H above ext. 0.15m) which appears to be reduced to scarp, though the grass and rush growth make it difficult to discern. The W half of the monument is heavily overgrown the blackthorn scrub which is encroaching on the E half of the monument. There is a possible entrance (Wth 1.9m) in the E quadrant, though this may be an old cattle gap. There is no corresponding causeway over the fosse. Description
In gently undulating pasture. This is the easternmost of a group of three ringforts with a second ringfort (TS058-017002-) located 10m to the SW and a third (TS058-017003-) 20m to the W. Circular raised area (diam. c. 20m) defined by a low broad earthen bank (overall Wth c. 4m; Wth at top c. 1m; int. H c. 0.2m; ext. Hc.1.4m). At the external base of the bank is a wide waterlogged fosse (Wth at base 3m; D 0.75m) and a low broad external earthen bank (overall Wth 5.8m; Wth at top 3m; int. H 0.95m; ext. H 0.2m). An E-W orientated farm trackway lies along the external base of the external bank NNW-NE. The original entrance is not recognisable. Description
In gently undulating pasture. This is the southernmost of a group of three ringforts with a second ringfort (TS058-017001-) located 10m to the NE and a third (TS058-017003-) 10m to the NW. Circular raised area (diam. 16m) defined by a low broad earthen bank (overall Wth 3.9m; Wth at top 1.2m; int. H 0.1m; ext. H 0.4m) with an external broad flat-bottomed fosse (overall Wth 4.5m; Wth at base 3m; D 0.1m). The bank is best preserved NW-NE being very low and barely visible elsewhere where the site is defined by a scarp (H 0.3m). The fosse is best preserved NW-NE being very shallow and barely visible elsewhere. A broad shallow NW-SE orientated linear fosse (L 10m; overall Wth 8m; D 0.2m) extents from the fosse of the ringfort at NW linking to the fosse of the neighbouring ringfort (TS058-017003-) to the NW. Description
In gently undulating pasture. This is the westernmost of a group of three ringforts with a second ringfort (TS058-017001-) located 20m to the E and a third (TS058-017002-) 10m to the SE. Ovoid raised area (dims. 20m NW-SE; 14m NE-SW) defined by a gently sloping earthen scarp (Wth 3m; H 0.65m) with an external broad flat-bottomed fosse (overall Wth 3.9m; Wth at base 2m; D 0.15m). The fosse encloses all sides and is best preserved N-SSW being very shallow and barely visible SSW-N. A broad shallow NW-SE orientated linear fosse (L 10m; overall Wth 8m; D 0.2m) extents from the fosse of the ringfort at SE linking to the fosse of the neighbouring ringfort (TS058-017002-) to the SE. There is an enclosure (TS058-011----) c. 160m to the NE and three ring-barrows (TS058-012----; TS058-012001-; TS058-012002-) c. 90m to the SE. Description
In low-lying wet pasture. A roughly circular enclosure (diam. c. 30m; overall diam. c. 53m) visible on satellite imagery (Google Earth satellite imagery, 18 November 2018), identified and reported by Jean-Charles Caillère. The enclosure appears to be defined by a bank with an outer fosse or berm and outer bank. An OS Ortho satellite image appears to show a mound in the interior. The outer fosse/berm and outer bank are truncated in the N sector by a roadway running ENE-WSW. This may be a barrow. There is a large barrow (TS058-009----) c. 400m to the SE and a ringfort (TS058-008----) c. 315m to the SSE.
