Description
On a hillock in undulating grassland. Marked on 3rd ed. of OS 6-inch map (1945-6) as a roughly oval enclosure (N-S c. 40m, E-W c. 30m). The monument has been levelled and all that survives is a denuded subcircular area (E-W 50m, N-S 46m). According to local information, this was the site of a 'rath' which was cleared just recently. Circa 30m SE of a ringfort (GA087-071----). Poorly preserved subcircular rath (N-S 32m, E-W 27.5m) defined by a degraded bank. A slight depression evident from SSW through W to N may indicate an external fosse. Quarrying has encroached upon the enclosing element at SE and SSW. A gap (Wth 3m) at E may be original. Description
In grassland, immediately NW of the Ballinasloe-Aughrim road. Marked on 3rd ed. of OS 6-inch map (1946) as a subrectangular unenclosed area (NNW-SSE c. 30m, ENE-WSW c. 20m). It consists of a slightly raised area delimited by a scarp, except from NW to NE where it has been destroyed by quarrying and the construction of farm buildings. Within the interior, some randomly placed limestone blocks, barely visible above ground level, may indicate grave-markers. According to local information, the area was tilled in the 1940s. A tower house (GA087-179----) lies c. 250m to SW and two ringforts (GA087-071----, GA087-071001-) c. 300m to N. Description
In gently undulating pastureland. Egan (1960, 120) identifies this as the site of the RC parish church of Kilcloony which was built in 1729. According to him (ibid.), it was oriented N-S, 'had pointed windows in the western wall' and 'in length ... measured 'forty-five feet [13.7m]'. The area is now occupied by a farmyard and a plain modern-looking rectangular outbuilding (N-S; L 13.1m, Wth 7m), used to house calves, now occupies the site. No architectural features survive. Description
Within St Joseph's Terrace, a housing estate to W of Portinuncula hospital, in Ballinasloe town. According to Egan (1960, 15), 'there is some evidence of a church in Dunlo in Kilcloony parish in the tenth century, the high church yard, or infants' burial ground was the seventeenth century name. Its position is shown on 'Petty's Atlas'. In 1955, during the construction of the housing estate, 'large quantities of adult human remains were unearthed' along with 'associated finds, a bronze harp-peg and pin and a bone spindle whorl' (ibid.; Topgr. Description
Detached three-bay former gate lodge, built 1864, now in use as house, comprising single-storey gabled central block having dormer floor, flanked by single-bay blocks with loggias, and with projecting canted bay to north, addressing main road. Recent L-plan two-storey extension to rear of central block. Slate roofs, pitched to central block and hipped elsewhere, with wide eaves overhanging and rendered chimneystacks, and cast-iron rainwater goods. Moulded and leaded roof to canted bay, with moulded eaves course. Dressed limestone walls with cut-stone plinth, front elevation of central block having end pilasters supporting cut-stone open-bed pediment. Central block has paired round-headed window openings to first floor openings and square-headed to ground floor, set into raised carved centrepiece, having moulded sill to first floor with panels beneath atop moulded cornice borne on brackets over pilasters to ground floor openings. Round-headed window openings to canted bay, separated by pilasters, with cut-stone eaves bands, moulded impost course and archivolts and cut-stone sills. Replacement uPVC windows throughout. Detached three-bay two-storey house, built c.1910, with canted bay windows with flat roofs to front (north) elevation, and later single-bay single-storey lean-to extension to rear. Pitched slate roof with render copings and eaves course, and rendered end chimneystacks. Smooth rendered walls with render quoins and plinth. Square-headed window openings with cut limestone sills and margined one-over-one pane timber sliding sash windows, with continuous sills to bay windows. Square-headed door opening with timber panelled door, overlights and sidelights. Garden to front bounded by dressed limestone wall having curved coping, and double-leaf metal gates to panelled rendered piers and quadrant walls with similar terminating piers.

Detached six-bay two-storey H-plan former school, built c.1820, with projecting end bays. Now in use as houses. Hipped slate roof with cut limestone chimneystacks and cast-iron rainwater goods. Cut snecked limestone walls with cut-stone quoins. Square-headed window openings, those to middle four bays having bipartite mullioned timber windows and those to projections and to east elevation having tripartite windows. Bipartite one-over-one pane timber sliding sash window to first floor of east projection. All windows having tooled cut-stone block-and-start surrounds and sills, and all front-facing windows having label-mouldings except for timber sash window. Square-headed door openings to middle two bays and to re-entrant sides of projections, with timber battened and replacement uPVC doors, cut-stone hood-mouldings and tooled block-and-start surrounds. Yard to front entered through wrought-iron pedestrian gate set to square-profile carved limestone piers, flanked by wrought-iron railings on cut-stone plinth.

Pair of detached three-bay single-storey former gate lodges, built c.1850, now in use as private houses and flanking public road. Recent lean-to extensions to north elevation of both lodges. Hipped reslated roofs with rendered chimneystacks. Ashlar limestone walls with plinth and moulded cornice. Short walls and outer long walls that face into gateway have limestone frames. Square-headed window openings to short sides, with moulded cornices, and round-headed openings to gate sides having voussoirs, all with cut-stone sills and replacement uPVC windows and replacement timber doors. South gate lodge has later lean-to addition to gate-side elevation with rendered walls, slate roof and square-headed uPVC windows. Carved limestone gate piers to east end of each lodge, having plinths, moulded panels, moulded cornices and pyramidal-topped caps, with surviving half of cast-iron double-leaf gate attached to south lodge. Quadrants formed by plinth walls with cast-iron railings extending to south from south lodge and to north from north lodge.

Round-headed door opening with carved limestone doorcase comprising archivolt with keystone supported on piers, flanked by pilasters, all with capitals and plinths. Round-headed double-leaf glazed timber panelled door. Cut limestone boundary wall to front of site with wrought-iron pedestrian gate. Rubble limestone demesne wall with crenellated coping stones to east of site.

Remains of farmyard, built c.1820, comprising detached multiple-bay two-storey range to south, having central half-hexagonal three-bay breakfront to middle of front (north) elevation, and remains of detached multiple-bay two-storey outbuildings to north and west ranges of yard. Remains of hipped slate roofs with cut limestone chimneystacks and cut limestone eaves course. Pitched slate roof to west range. Rubble stone walls. Square-headed window openings with cut limestone sills and voussoirs. Square-headed door openings with cut limestone voussoirs and timber battened doors. Segmental-headed carriage arches with cut limestone voussoirs. Recent outbuildings to centre of yard. Located to north of Garbally House.

Subterranean icehouse, built c.1800. No longer in use. Comprising circular-profile vault, approached by four cut limestone steps in entrance passage. Rubble limestone walls, with brick-lined walls and ceiling to vault. Square-headed door opening with dressed limestone keystone. Set in dense woodland, located within former Garbally Demesne.

Freestanding hollow limestone obelisk, erected 1811. Octagonal-profile carved stone structure having ribs to angles and graduated elliptical piercings to faces. Scrolled bottoms to ribs, over concave-profile base. Set on heavy stone square-profile plinth having moulded cornice, recessed panels to two side and slightly projecting centrepieces to other sides, with moulded string courses over plinths, all atop stepped base having canted corner piers. Located to south-west of Garbally House, in demesne.

Detached two-storey over basement country house, built 1819, having two internal courtyards, renovated and courtyards filled in c.1850. Now in use as secondary school. Front (north) and side (east and west) elevations have eleven bays and south has nine bays. Three bays of each end of front and west elevations are set into slight advances, and front elevation has tetrastyle porte cochère flanked by less advanced two-bay porticos. South elevation has middle five bays recessed slightly, with bowed flat-roofed three-bay single-storey former porch, doorway now accommodating window. East elevation has fully exposed basement, middle seven bays are set back between two-storey two-bay wide and deep returns with single-bay two-storey flat-roof blocks to re-entrant corners. Northern has slightly lower single-bay two-storey block to east, three-bay single-storey flat-roofed addition to east again and three-bay single-storey outbuilding to south. Southern return to house has multiple-bay two-storey block to east. East elevation of house and blocks to east form three-sided yard with cobbled surface. Hipped slate roofs with rendered chimneystacks, moulded limestone parapets and cornices. Rendered walls with cut limestone platband between floors, plinth course and moulded sill courses. Cut coursed limestone walls to bowed former porch. Square decorative ceramic heraldic plaques to first floor above same. Snecked limestone walls to blocks of re-entrant corners and to blocks to east of northern return. Square-headed window openings having moulded limestone surrounds, those to ground floor having alternating segmental and triangular pediments, and six-over-six pane timber sliding sash windows. Former doorway to porch has timber panelled to base of window, and cut limestone step. Square-headed door opening to north elevation, having timber panelled double-leaf door, with multi-pane margined overlight and carved limestone surround comprising pilasters with plinths, capitals and entablature, and with cut limestone step to width of porte cochère. Porte cochère comprises carved limestone tetrastyle Doric portico flanked by shallower bays with respondent pilasters, all with moulded bases and capitals and supporting entablature and moulded cornice with modillions. Decorative cast-iron double-leaf gates and cut limestone balustrade to either side of west elevation. House set in mature landscape with formal terraced gardens, having cut limestone steps to west, and sun dial on cut and carved limestone pedestal to south. Garden entrance to north-east having cast-iron double-leaf gate with square-profile cut-stone piers, flanking spear-headed railings on cut-stone plinth wall. Disused five-bay single-storey garden structure having ashlar limestone loggia with arcaded front, end bays slightly advanced, having moulded cornice and plinths, round-headed doorway and window openings to inner wall with margined one-over-one pane timber sliding sash windows with bars, and square-headed doorways to end walls leading to rear. Glasshouse adjacent has cast-iron superstructure over ashlar limestone plinth wall, with coping and plinth.

Detached eight-bay three-storey school buildings, built c.1940, having slightly advanced bay to north-west end of main elevation, full-width open single-storey passage block to front of same elevation, full-height return to rear, and single, two, and three-storey additions to south-east and rear elevations. Two-storey linking block connecting to rear of main school building. Flat roofs with moulded render cornice and parapet, and cast-iron rainwater goods. Smooth rendered walls with render eaves band and with moulded sill course continuing to form cornice of single-storey block. Square-profile rendered piers to single-storey block with capitals and plinth. Square-headed window openings with moulded rendered surrounds and timber sliding sash windows throughout all elevations, nine-over-nine pane to first floor, six-over-six to top floor, and three-over-three to ground floor of north-west end elevation. Mixed two-over-two, six-over-six and four-over-four pane windows to return and additions. Building located to east of country house.

Closed U-plan two-storey former stableyard, built c.1820, of limestone and comprising eleven-bay range to east, lacking some openings to ground floor, and having integral carriage arch to middle of façade. Nine-bay ranges to north and south, and boundary wall to west. Now in use as classrooms. Pitched slate roofs to north and south ranges, hipped to east ends, hipped slate roof to east range, with cut-stone chimneystacks and eaves course and cast-iron rainwater goods with stone troughs. Snecked dressed stone walls with cut-stone plinth course. Square-headed window openings with tooled stone block-and-start surrounds and cut-stone sills with replacement timber windows. Square-headed door openings with tooled stone block-and-start surrounds with timber battened doors. Openings to west elevation of east range set in segmental-headed cut-stone arcade flush with walls with proud keystones. Round vehicular arch with carved stone surround to both elevations of east range, having carved stone pediment and Giant Order pilasters, and with raised rectangular stone panel beneath pediment. Vehicular carriage opening to west side of yard, with double-leaf cast-iron gate flanked by round-arch pedestrian entrances with cast-iron gates, cut-stone archivolts with keystones and imposts, flanked by square-profile rusticated stone piers with flat caps. Rubble stone boundary walls with cut-stone copings. Located to east of country house.

Single-storey flat-roofed open-sided porch completes plan at north-east corner. Slightly advanced centres to east and north elevations, east having canted bay window. Recent single-storey extension with hipped roof to west elevation. Hipped slate roof with rendered chimneystack and concave cut-stone eaves course. Coursed cut-stone walls with plinth, having slightly recessed corners, cut-stone sill course above moulded stone string course, latter continuing to form cornice to porch and bay window. Channelled rusticated pier to corner of porch. Segmental-headed window opening to first floor of east elevation, set in segmental-headed recess, and having carved moulded stone surround and double one-over-one pane timber sliding sash windows, eaves to each side being borne on carved stone brackets. Square-headed window openings to first floor of north elevation and pseudo-three-centred arch window openings to ground floor of north, south and east elevations, all with moulded stone surrounds and one-over-one pane timber sliding sash windows. Segmental-headed arches to porch, having moulded archivolts and imposts with keystones, set into square-headed recesses. Segmental-headed door opening set within porch and having timber panelled door.

Entrance gates to Garbally country house, erected c.1860, comprising double-leaf cast-iron vehicular gate flanked by rectangular-profile carved limestone piers with moulded corners to recessed sides, carved panels, pyramidal caps over moulded cornices, in turn flanked by matching cast-iron pedestrian gates and further matching piers, with tooled limestone quadrant plinth walls beyond these with copings and plinths and having matching cast-iron railings with terminating square-profile channelled rusticated piers. Former entrance gates to Garbally to west of gate lodge, erected c.1860, consisting of ornate cast-iron double-leaf gate set to carved limestone piers with dentillated flat capstones and decorative panels on plinths, flanked by matching cast-iron railings on similar plinths, in turn flanked by matching piers, and matching cast-iron railings on cut limestone plinth walls with copings and plinths. Terminating carved limestone piers with vermiculated channelled rustication. Located to north of Garbally Demesne and to west of Ballinasloe town.
