• LF010-084 Ritual site - holy well
  Description

  On the SE-facing slope of a low hill in rough pasture. In 1837 O’Donovan recorded that there were ‘three venerable ash trees, two living and one dead’ at this well. Its waters were used as a drink only and an ‘Ana or Stabha’ (a drinking-cup chained to the well) was always left at it for the use of pilgrims (OSL, 24). The well is within a D-shaped structure (2.3m ENE-WSW; 1.6m NNW-SSE) defined by a low drystone wall (H 0.7m; Wall T 0.6m). The upper portion of the wall is relatively modern but the lower courses appear to be considerably older. A stream flows in a SE direction from it. (Kearney 1969, 19) Compiled by: Patrick F.   Description

  On a shelf of level ground on a S-facing slope. A raised oval area (30m N-S; 25m E-W) enclosed from NW-NNW-N by a low bank of earth and stone (Wth 3.7m; H 0.2-0.95m) and elsewhere defined by a scarp (H 0.55-1.35m). A report in 1975 (SMR file) recorded an external fosse, which has since been infilled. The original entrance is not recognisable. Compiled by: Patrick F. O'Donovan Date of upload: 26 August 2011

  Description

  On a low knoll in pasture. A report in 1975 (SMR file) recorded a raised circular area (diam. c. 33m) enclosed by a low bank of earth and stone with a shallow external fosse.   Description

  On a knoll in undulating pasture. A report in 1975 (SMR file) indicates that this raised subcircular area (29.7m N-S; 28.5m E-W) was enclosed by a low bank of earth and stone with a berm at its base. • LF010-130 Excavation - miscellaneous
  Description

  Archaeological monitoring in 2001, prior to the construction of a water-treatment works, revealed a double bowled pit feature (L 1.6m; Wth 0.57m; D 0.25m) of uncertain function. Also identified, in the secondary fill, were crude earthenware and possible flint or chert débitage. The function and date of these features are unknown (Elder and Halliday 2003, 254 5).
