- TS058-046 Barrow - pond barrow
Description
On a slight NW-facing slope, on the floor of a wide gently sloping NE-SW orientated valley, in low-lying wet pasture. Two ring-barrows (TS058-070001- and TS058-070002-) are located 18m to the SW and the standing stone (TS058-023004-) at Longstone is visible 1.5km to the NNE with a mound-barrow (TS058-047----) visible 750m to the SE. A circular hollow area (diam. 54m) defined by a substantial flat-topped earthen bank (overall Wth 20-21m; Wth at top 4m; int. H 1.1-2.9m; ext. H 0.7m). The bank has a very uniform profile with a flat top and the inner slope (Wth 10m) being consistently broader than the outer slope (Wth 6m). There is no entrance, however, there is a dip in the bank (Wth 3m; D 0.3m) in the NW and S quadrants where there bank has been denuded by cattle. The interior is level and waterlogged. The interior is level and waterlogged. A embanked enclosure (TS050-024----) is located 10km to the NE, it has a similar morphology but appears to have an original entrance. - TS058-047 Barrow - mound barrow
Description
On a slight NW-facing slope, overlooking a NE-SW orientated valley, in improved pasture. A barrow (TS058-046----) is visible on the valley floor 750m to the NW and the standing stone (TS058-023004-) at Longstone is visible 1.8km to the N on the near horizon. Flat-topped ovoid earthen mound (dims. top 4.5m N-S; 3m E-W; base 17m N-S; 13m E-W; H 1.85-2.4m). No fosse or quarry ditch is visible at ground level. Erosion caused by livestock has formed a rough terrace midway up the side of the mound SW-SE. Some rubble stone has been exposed on the side of the mound at E. Description
On top of level surface of a slight rise, on the floor of a wide gently sloping NE-SW orientated valley, in level low-lying wet pasture. This ring-barrow is conjoined to a second ring-barrow (TS058-070002-) to the ESE. An embanked enclosure (TS058-046----) is located 18m to the NE, the standing stone (TS058-023004-) at Longstone is visible 1.5km to the NNE with a mound-barrow (TS058-047----) visible 750m to the SE. Circular area (diam. 5.5m) defined by an earthen scarp (Wth 0.6m; H 0.05-0.1m) with a shallow fosse (Wth at base 0.6m) and an external earthen bank (overall Wth 1m; int. H 0.05-0.1m). The external bank is incorporated into the external bank of a slightly smaller ring-barrow (TS058-070001-) E-ESE. The interior is level and clear of overgrowth. On top of level surface of a slight rise, on the floor of a wide gently sloping NE-SW orientated valley, in level low-lying wet pasture. This ring-barrow is conjoined to a second ring-barrow (TS058-070001-) to the ESE. An embanked enclosure (TS058-046----) is located 18m to the NE, the standing stone (TS058-023004-) at Longstone is visible 1.5km to the NNE with a mound-barrow (TS058-047----) visible 750m to the SE. Circular area (diam. 2.4m) defined by an earthen scarp (Wth 0.6m; H 0.15m) with a shallow fosse (Wth at base 0.7m) and an external earthen bank (overall Wth 2.8m; int. H 0.15m; ext. H 0.05m). The external bank is incorporated into the external bank of a slightly smaller ring-barrow (TS058-070001-) WSW-WNW. The interior is level and clear of overgrowth. Description
In level wet pasture with a ditch-barrow (TS058-043001-) located 70m to the NE and another (TS058-043002-) 90m to the NNE. Circular raised area (diam. 28m) defined by a narrow flat-topped earthen bank (overall Wth 3.4m; Wth at top 1.6m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 1.2m). At the external base of the bank is a wide flat-bottomed fosse (Wth at base 3.2m; D 0.3m) and a low irregular external earthen bank (overall Wth 1.8m; Wth at top 1.2m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 0.1m). The internal bank is broken through by livestock at SW, WNW, NW and NNE. From S-SW the fosse has been almost completely infilled. The external bank is not visible at ground level S-SW where a NW-SE orientated field bbank skirts the line of the absent external bank at SSW. A break (Wth 2m) in the internal bank at E marks the position of the original entrance. The interior is level and clear of overgrowth with well spaced thorn bushes along the internal bank. Circular area (diam. 4m) defined by a very slight fosse (overall Wth 1.8m; Wth at base 0.6m; D 0.1m). From N-W the fosse is barely visible at ground level. No entrance feature is evident. Description
In level wet pasture, 10m to the E of a NE-SW flowing stream. Circular slightly raised area (diam. 28m) defined by a low internal earthen bank (overall Wth 4.7m; Wth at top 1m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.5m) with an external narrow flat-bottomed fosse (overall Wth 2m; Wth at base 0.6m; D 0.2m). The internal bank has a low irregular profile and is best preserved NE-W. The fosse is very shallow and difficult to discern at ground level S-NW. Two NE-SW orientated relic field drains link to the fosse at NE and S and the drain has been widened (Wth at base 2m) between the two drains NE-S. The original entrance is not recognisable. Description
On level ground in gently undulating pasture with a possible barrow (TS058-076----) located 100m to the SE. Roughly circular slightly raised area (diam. 17m) defined by a gently sloping earthen scarp (overall Wth 3.5-4m; H 1-1.2m) with an external fosse (overall Wth 4.3m; Wth at base 2.2m; D 0.4m). From SW-W the scarped edge has been straightened off by a NNW-ESE orientated field bank. The fosse is best preserved W-NNE being silted up and barely visible NNE-SW. A relic NE-SW orientated field drain links to the fosse at NNE. The original entrance is not recognisable. Description
In wet level terrain under pasture in a stud farm. This possible ring-barrow was identified on an aerial photograph (Bruff aerial survey ref. 2029) (Doody 1993, 175). There is no visible trace of this monument above ground. It may have been disturbed by a field drain which runs NE-SW across this portion of the field. Description
On a slight SE-facing slope at the E end of a gently sloping rise, with natural ground level falling gently away W-N, in pasture. An enclosure (TS066-155001-) is visible 250m to the E. Roughly circular raised area (diam. 19.5m) defined by an earthen scarp (Wth 3-4.5m; H 1.5-2m). No trace of a fosse is visible at ground level. Livestock have eroded a slight step into the scarp midway up the sides. An irregular ramp (Wth 3m) at W may mark the position of the original entrance. The interior has been raised to compensate for the underlying natural slope with the N half sloping slightly facing S while the S half is level. The interior is clear of overgrowth. On top of a slight rise in gently undulating elevated pasture. Visible on an aerial photograph (Bruff No. 5/2031). Roughly circular slightly raised area (diam. 24m) defined by a gently sloping earthen scarp (overall Wth 5.4m; H 0.65m) with a shallow external fosse (overall Wth 3.7m; Wth at base 1.6m; D 0.2m). From NE-SE the fosse is absent and the scarp merges into the underlying natural slope. The original entrance is not recognisable. The interior is level and clear of overgrowth.
