Description
In pasture, on an ENE-facing slope with good views of surrounding landscape NE-E-ESE. Roughly circular area (dims. 26.5m N-S; 26.5m E-W), is defined by earthen bank (Wth 5.3m; int. H 0.6m; ext. H 2.1m) reduced to scarp in places, particularly along the slightly straightened edge ENE-E-ESE. Breach (Wth 3.5m) at S and breach (Wth 4.0m) at NW of which either could conceivably be the original entrance. External fosse (Wth 4.7m; D 0.4m) is visible in places, although is truncated by field boundary ENE-E-S-SSW and also by a quarry WSW-WNW. Possible outer bank (Wth 3.6m; int. H 1.0m; ext. H 0.6m) WNW-NNW. Possible motte (TS069-037----) and church and graveyard (TS069-036---- and TS069-036001-) c. 330m to SSW. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011

Description
In rough, level pasture. This remains the only green area left in field at present as recently reclaimed and drained to W, E and S. No visible surface trace except a linear band (long-axis N-S) of light green moss at a similar location as the linear earthwork as it is depicted on the latest edition OS 6-inch map. There is no right return visible at N end as is depicted on map. Linear drain (long-axis N-S) dug to E of monument. Depicted on the latest edition OS 6-inch map as adjoining the E terminus of enclosure (TS069-011001-). According to Cahill (1982), evidence of a field system to W of enclosure (TS069-011001-). - TS069-036 Church
Description
On level ground, with land falling away to the N, in undulating terrain at the N end of the village of Rosegreen, within a graveyard (TS069-036001-). White (1892, 16) suggests that this was the parish church of Ballydoyle which in 1576 is described in a Presentment to the Grand Jury of the County as 'the Church of Temple Bally Dowle, is not kept according as it ought be, the church not built but standing in waste'. An undivided church (int. dims. c. 18m N-S; 7.6m E-W), aligned E-W, constructed of limestone rubble, roughly coursed. The church is in a very ruinous condition, only a length of the N (H 2.9m; L3.2m; T 0.92m) and S (H 2.35m; L 4.3m) wall survive upstanding, the NE angle survives approx. 3 courses high and the SE angle is gone. The E gable only survives as a grass-covered bank (H above ext. 0.95m; H above int. 0.72m). The W end of the church has largely collapsed, the sides walls are apparent as low stoney banks. A calvary has been built on the line of the W gable, the rubble from which appears to have been built up and levelled off to form a platform (H above ext. 1.09m; H above int. 0.33m) for the calvary. The main length of the external face of the upstanding S wall (Wth c. 0.87m) has been crudely repointed with a concrete mortar while the internal face has been robbed out. There is a lot of rubble E of both lengths of upstanding walling. The interior is very undulating and rises towards the E end. There are a number of headstones in the church interior, though the inscriptions are not legible they appear to be 18th/19th century in date. There are two table-top tombs in the interior, one at the E end and the other, bearing the date 1722, at the W end covers a vault. There is a graveslab (TS069-036002-) in the interior, partially embedded in the ground adjacent to the S wall near the E gable. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011
- TS069-036001 Graveyard
Description
On level ground, with land falling away to the N, in undulating terrain at the N end of the village of Rosegreen. A medieval church (TS069-036----) is roughly centrally placed within a large, roughly rectangular graveyard (dims. 109m N-S; 76m E-W) . On the 1st (1840) ed. OS 6-inch map the graveyard is shown as extending c. 20m S of the church and is c. 46m E-W, it is indicated by a dashed line suggesting there was no permanent enclosing element. This is supported by the OS Letters (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 3, 81 (246)) which state that 'On the south side there is a graveyard still in use, not separated by a wall or otherwise, from the adjoining pasture field'. By the 2nd (1906) ed. the entire field which enclosed the church and graveyard has become the graveyard. The headstones reflect this change, all the 19th-century headstones being concentrated in the area of the 1st ed. graveyard boundary. The later graveyard is enclosed by a stone wall with an entrance at the E end of the S wall. There are some headstones and two table-top tombs within the church interior, as well as a graveslab (TS069-036002-). Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011
- TS069-036002 Graveslab
Description
Within the medieval church (TS069-036----) and graveyard (TS069-036001-) at the N end of the village of Rosegreen. A tapering limestone graveslab (L 1.19m; T 0.15m; Wth at top 0.575m; Wth at base 0.35m) lying in a recumbent position partially on the collapsed S wall of the church, near the E gable, with the lower portion partially embedded in the ground within the church interior. The graveslab is chamfered on all visible sides with an unusually steep chamfer (Wth 0.055-0.06m). No surface decoration or inscription could be discerned. - TS069-037 Barrow - mound barrow
Description
In generally level pasture with surface undulations due to limestone outcropping. Small oval mound (dims. 9.1m N-S; 12.7m E-W) defined by gradually sloping sides (Wth 3.0m; H 1.3m-1.4m) rising to a generally level area (dims. 4m N-S; 2.2m E-W). Off centre to N is a small mound (dims. 1.8m N-S; 2m E-W; H 0.5m) of earth and stone. Badly eroded by cattle. Named 'The Moat' on latest edition OS 6-inch map. According to Cahill (1982), unlikely to be medieval due to small scale and more synonymous with a prehistoric burial mound. Ringfort/rath (TS069-010----) is 350m to NNE. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011
- TS069-038001 Castle - unclassified
Description
Within enclosure (TS069-038002-), concentrated mostly on the S side, with a series of walls projecting to N and W. An uneven mound (dims. 16m N-S; 22.4m E-W) of sod-covered stone likely represents the remains of castle masonry. There are some large sections of masonry at the base of the steep S side of the enclosure. Mound partially obscured by vegetation. Linear wall (Wth 2m; int H 0.2m; ext H 0.45m) extends (long axis c. N-S) (L 16m) to E of mound and turns (L5.5m) at right angle to W. A break (Wth 1m) in the wall near the W end may be a possible doorway. The wall turns (L 1.5m) to the NW where it adjoins another internal wall. Another wall (L 6m) extends (long-axis NW-SE) to the NW from the castle mound and turns W continuing (L 18m) to the inner enclosing wall of the main castle enclosure (TS069-038002-). Named on latest edition OS 6-inch map as 'Shancashlaun' and described in the Civil Survey 1654-56 as a 'broken castle' (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 206). According to O'Flanagan (1930, vol. 3, 81), there are some fragmentary remains of masonry and traceable foundations enclosed in a large trivallate enclosure. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011
- TS069-038002 Castle - ringwork
Description
In gently undulating pasture. Oval area (dims. 41m N-S; 44m E-W) defined by remains of inner earth and stone bank (Wth 11.5m; int. H 0.55m; ext. H 3.05m) enclosing castle (TS069-038001-). Fosse (Wth 14m; D 2.3m) SW-N-NE is inaccessible in places at NW and NNE. No fosse or bank NE-E-SE where ground falls from inner enclosing area to water-filled fosse. Bank (Wth 11.5m; int. H 2.3m; ext. H 2.2m) SW-N-NE is well formed and steeper on exterior than interior. Fosse (Wth 11.5m; D 2.6m) is wide and flat based (Basal Wth 2m). Fosse is inaccessible W-NW due to overgrowth and filled with stagnant water NNW-N-E-SE. Bank (Wth 11m; int. H 2.6m; ext. H 2.25m) SW-W-ENE and continues in form of thin, eroded tree-lined bank ENE-SE. Fosse (Wth 11m; D 1.85m) SW-N-ENE and traces NE-ENE. Remains of bank (Wth 6.7m int. H 1.85m; ext. H 0.5m) SW-WNW and NE-ENE and incorporated into field boundary WNW-NE. According to O'Flanagan (1930, vol. 3, 81), there are some fragmentary remains of masonry and traceable foundations enclosed in a large trivallate enclosure. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011
