• TS069-006 Castle - unclassified
  Description

  In stable yard of Lyonstown farm which has a tar and grass surface and is enclosed by buildings. Described in the Civil Survey (1654-6) as 'a Castle halfe' with the proprietor in 1640 listed as 'Richard Stapleton of Lainstowne Irish Papist' (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 221). The OS Letters (1840) mention that of the castle at Lyonstown 'no parts of their walls are visible at present though they were all nearly perfect in the memory of old men still living' (O'Flanagan 1930, vol.1, 118).   Description

  Utilising a natural hillock in undulating pasture sloping generally to S. Lyonstown Castle (TS069-006----) was located c. 100m to N. Raised roughly circular enclosure (diam. 38.5m N-S; 34m E-W) defined by a bank with high stone content (Wth 5.3m; int. H 0.86m; ext. H 3.05m), ext. fosse (Wth 2.8m; 2.07m) and outer bank (Wth 2.8m; ext. H 0.7m) visible from E-S-W. Gap (Wth c. 5.5m) in inner bank in S quadrant, outer bank is disturbed in this sector. • TS069-009 Enclosure
  Description

  On SE facing slope in undulating terrain under pasture. Depression at base of slope would appear to be a largely filled-in quarry with a lot of soil and cleared vegetation dumped around the edge. Monument is indicated on the 1st (1840) ed. OS 6-inch map as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 30m). Enclosure probably levelled between 1840, when it was indicated on the 1st ed.
