- TS061-094 Barrow - ring-barrow
Description
In pasture, on top of the S-end of a ridge (long axis NNW-SSE) at a height of 500ft OD. Excellent views in all directions. Oval mound (dims. 38m NNW-SSE; 34m ENE-WSW) defined by scarp (max. Wth 4.15m; H 0.6m) best preserved NE-SE. Possible causeway (Wth 4.5m) at W. Fosse SSW-SE is best preserved (max. overall Wth 7.65m; max basal Wth 2.4m; D 0.15m) NE-SE. Fosse is truncated by curvilinear field boundary SE-SSW, which is within fosse and respecting its curvature. Scant remains of outer bank (overall Wth 5.9m; Wth at top 2m; int. H 0.15m; ext. H 0.25m) SW-WNW. Gentle, oval depression (dims. c. 14m ENE-WSW; c. 12m NNW-SSE) off-centre to SSE which is covered by nettles. Depression is also clearly identifiable on aerial photographs (ASIAP (35) 17-20, 03/08/1996). This is a National Monument (no. 581). Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011
- TS061-096 Ringfort - rath
Description
In small, greenfield area of farmyard which has been modified beyond recognition. This monument is depicted on the 1st (1840) and 2nd (1952-54) ed. OS 6-inch map as a circular area (map overall diam. c. 50m) defined by a bank and was drawn as such in a sketch plan and sections in 1954 (OS Field Memorandums). Monument presently defined by a scarp NE-SW which appears to be incorporated into field boundary. Field boundary overgrown and covered in fir trees SE-SSW. Description
In pasture, on top of a ridge (long axis NNW-SSE). Excellent views in all directions. Circular area (dims. 44m NE-SW; 42m NW-SE) defined by an earthen bank (overall Wth 4m; Wth at top 0.75m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 1.65m) reduced to scarp in places. Entrance (overall Wth 8m; basal Wth 5.5m) at SSE. Intervening fosse (overall Wth 7.6m; basal Wth 2.7m; D 0.75m) SSW-E, is U-shaped. Outer bank (overall Wth 3.9m; Wth at top 1.2m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 0.75m) SSW-E, is eroded down in places. Outer bank is levelled and pushed into fosse SSW-E. Interior has a SSE-facing slope. Description
In improved pasture, at the SSE-end of a ridge (long-axis NNW-SSE). Moated site to WSW consists of the remains of a sub-rectangular area (dims. 33m NNW-SSE; 32m ENE-WSW) defined by levelled scarp (Wth 6m; H 0.8m) to SSE and curvilinear depression of former field boundary to WSW. Possible remains of a linear scarp of WSW-side beyond same. Monument is levelled to NNW where a trackway now exists and it is levelled off downslope gradually to ENE. Remains are very uneven and lumpy along ENE-side. Interior is uneven and lumpy and there are two irregular depressions off-centre to SSE. Moated site (TS061-098001-) is conjoined to the ENE. Farm trackway (Wth 2.5m) is to immediate NNW. Both moated sites are depicted on the OS 6-inch 1952-54 ed. map as conjoined enclosures, this moated site is defined as a sub-rectangular are (dims. c. 48m ENE-WSW; c. 32m NNW-SSE) to WSW and the conjoined moated site (TS061-098001-) as a small, D-shaped area conjoined to ENE. The pond depicted in the interior of this moated site on the OS 6-inch 1952-54 ed. map has been backfilled. Ringfort (TS061-097----) is c. 100m to NW. - TS061-098001 Moated site
Description
In improved pasture, at the SSE-end of a ridge (long-axis NNW-SSE). Moated site conjoined to another moated site (TS061-098----) to the WSW. It is completely levelled over a large area though traces of a levelled outline are visible along the SSE-side, where it follows a natural contour. Farm trackway (Wth 2.5m) is to immediate NNW. Both moated sites are depicted on the 1952-54 edition OS 6-inch map as conjoined enclosures, TS061-098---- is defined as a sub-rectangular area with an internal pond to WSW and TS061-098001- as a small, D-shaped area (dims. c. 35m NW-SE; 20m ENE-WSW) conjoined to the ENE. Description
In pasture, on gentle N-facing slope, enclosed by linear grove of trees to E and S. Sub-circular area (dims. 20m N-S; 14m E-W) defined by steep earthen scarp (Wth 4.0m; H 1.5m). NE-sector of scarp truncated by quarrying activities. External fosse (Wth 9.8m; D 0.8m) is well preserved all around monument and opens out into a semi-circular area (dims. 13m NE-SW; 26m NW-SE) at NE, where the inner scarp of the monument has been truncated. Description
On gentle SE facing slope in undulating pasture. Ringfort (TS069-005002-) located c. 20m to SE and enclosure (TS069-012----) is clearly visible on top of hillock c. 400 m to ESE. Circular area (diam. 30m N-S; 29.2m E-W) enclosed by a bank (Wth 3.2-7.7m; int. H 0.32m; et. H 1.17m), water-logged fosse (Wth 4.5; D 0.5-0.87m) and outer bank (Wth 1.6m; ext. H 0.73m) only visible from SE-S-SW. Interior is relatively cleara of vegetation, some small trees around the perimeter and nettles in SE quadrant. Bank is disturbed in NW quadrant. A field boundary running N-S truncates the W edge of the ringfort, the rest of the monument is enclosed by a post and pail fence. - TS069-005002 Ringfort - rath
Description
On gentle SE-facing slope in undulating pasture. Ringfort (TS069-005001-) located c. 20m to NW and enclosure (TS069-012----) is clearly visible on top of hillock c. 400 m to ESE. Ringfort has been levelled but W half (diam. 32.7m NNW-SSE) is still visible as a low curving earthen bank (Wth c. 6m; H 0.1m) with shallow ext. fosse (Wth 4.6m; D 0.14m). Monument was upstanding in 1982 when it was described as being in 'good condition' and was classified as a ringfort (Cahill 1982). In 1979 it was inspected and described as a rath with 'a small, probably circular area demarcated by a natural low platform surrounded by a deep U-shaped fosse. Entrance with causeway at E.
