- MA038-044001 Structure
Description
In pasture, located 15m to N of rath (MA038-044001-). This structure is not indicated on the 1838 and 1922 OS 6-inch map. It was included in the RMP (1997) as an enclosure based on a local survey. It consists of a circular, sunken stone-lined structure (Diam. 7m; D. 1m) enclosed at top by slightly raised rim. Its function is unclear; it appears to be of relatively recent date. Compiled by: Jane O'Shaughnessy Date of upload: 25 July 2019
- MA038-044002 Ringfort - rath
Description
In rough pasture, located on a prominent rise, from which there is a steep fall of ground to the River Deel which lies 55m to S and marks the townland boundary. The location overlooks a bend in the river, and there are excellent views to SE and SW along the river valley. Named ‘Rathglass’ on the 1838 and 1922 OS 6-inch maps, this rath consists of a raised circular area (25.3m N–S; c. 25m E–W) defined by a bank of earth and stones, and enclosed by a fosse and an external bank, evident now only on the W half. The inner bank (Wth 3.6m; int. H 0.8m; ext. H 1.4m, at N) is best preserved at NW–NE, but is reduced elsewhere to a scarp retaining only a slight internal rim; stones protruding along the inner edge may be remnants of a kerb. The fosse is evident at SE–W as a terrace (Wth 1.7m), with a fall of ground on its outer edge; at SE-S the terrace has an almost vertical scarp faced with stones, the result of being incorporated into a later field boundary. At W–NNE the fosse can be traced as a shallow depression (Wth 1.6-2m), and is defined on its outer edge by the external bank, which is reduced to a low, sod-covered rise (Wth 1.6-2m; ext. H 0.2m). The fosse and external bank cannot be traced on the E arc, where remnants of a linear N-S field fence (Wth 1.2m) overlie their line. The NW quadrant appears to be at a slightly higher level than the rest of the interior, which is level. The entrance may have been at SE where there is a gap or break in the bank, now obscured by overgrowth. The perimeter is ringed with thorn bushes, gorse and brambles; the interior is grassy with clumps of ferns and brambles. There is a structure (MA038-044001-) located 15m to N. - MA038-172 Burnt mound
Description
Located in rough, damp pasture. A layer (L 6-8m; D 0.3-0.4m) of dark soil mixed with heat-shattered fragments of sandstone and charcoal fragments is visible in an E-facing section of a N-S field drain. A small portion of mound material is also visible in the field fence bordering the E side of the drain. The layer is truncated at the S by a modern causeway/farm track that traverses the drain. There is another burnt mound (MA038-173----) 15m to SW. Compiled by: Jane O'Shaughnessy Date of upload: 19 August 2019
- MA038-173 Burnt mound
Description
Located in rough, damp pasture. This possible burnt mound is evident as a slightly raised surface spread (diam c. 6m) of charcoal-rich soil and shattered stone, with a possible further linear spread of burnt material for several meters to SW. Its exact limits are uncertain.A NE-SW field drain lies a few meters to SE. There is a burnt mound (MA038-172----) 15m to NE, a burnt mound (MA038-174----) 20m to SSW, and another (MA038-175---) is located 140m to NE. Compiled by: Jane O'Shaughnessy Date of upload: 19 August 2019
- MA038-174 Burnt mound
Description
Located in rough, pasture, on the W edge of an area of wet ground. Gently rising ground to W. This burnt mound has been levelled; it is evident as a surface spread (c. 8m E-W; 6m N-S) of black, charcoal-rich stony soil. The mound is distinguished from the surrounding field surface by a differential growth of grass, but the exact limits are not clear. Another burnt mound (MA038-173----) is located c. 20m to N. Compiled by: Jane O'Shaughnessy Date of upload: 19 August 2019
- MA038-175 Burnt mound
Description
In pasture, at base of the NE-facing slope of a low knoll. A NW-SE field drain bordering a road lies immediately to NE. This burnt mound is evident as a roughly oval, grass-covered mound (10m NW-SE; c. 6.5m NE-SW; H 0.5m at NE). It is composed of stone fragments in black soil. The surface of the mound is traversed by relict cultivation furrows on a NE-SW axis. Compiled by: Jane O'Shaughnessy Date of upload: 19 August 2019
