No visible surface trace survives. An earthwork (GA029-171----) lay 150m to E. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Description
Some 150m E of an enclosure (GA029-170----). Marked on 1st ed. on OS 6-inch map as a circular enclosure (D 45m) but evidently much damaged by time of 3rd ed. (1932) when only a hachured arc at N is shown. No visible surface trace survives; a number of houses now occupy the site. A CBG (GA029-171001-) lay within the interior. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. - GA029-172 Monumental structure
Description
In the centre of Tuam town (GA029-199----): its location and the traditions surrounding it are hopelessly intertwined with the sites of a 'tumulus' (GA029-203----) and a castle (GA029-173----). Named but not clearly indicated on 1st ed. of OS 6-inch map to E of Shop St. In discussing the significance of the 'ancient name of Tuam … Tuam da ghuálainn', the OS Letters (O'Flanagan 1927, Vol. 1, 31, 64) record that 'the spot … which tradition says, gave originally name to Tuam, is still pointed out in John Costelloe's garden … It is called the chair of Tuam, in which sat after his election, the member formerly returned by Tuam as a borough, to Parliament'. In 1980, it was reconstructed as a formal inauguration chair of cut limestone and set into a possible turret of the castle. However, it may originally have been just a symbolic term, possibly more closely associated with the 'tumulus' nearby. (Kelly 1904, 257; Ó Murchú 1907, 7) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
- GA029-173 Castle - unclassified
Description
In the centre of Tuam town (GA029-199----): the site appears to have occupied the crest of a rise overlooking an old fording point on the River Nanny to NW. Under the year 1161, the Annals record that Roderic O'Conor erected a 'Castrum Mirificum' at Tuam (Story 1693, 152). This may be the same as the castle of 'Tuame' mentioned in the list of 1574 (Nolan 1901b, 117), then in the possession of 'Tharchbushop [sic]'. According to OS Letters (O'Flanagan 1927, Vol. 1, 33), the castle 'stood across the centre of Shop Street, within a few yards of the Mitre Hotel'. At least one 17th-C writer refers to 'walls … standing to the present day [i.e. 1666]' (see Waldron 1973), and OS Letters (ibid.) record that 'part of the wall of the bawn is used as the front wall of two publick houses'. These accounts contrast with that of Lewis (1873, Vol. 2, 648, also 646) who, having stated that only 'slight remains' survive, proceeds to outline an elaborate picture of the original. All that survives is an enigmatic D-shaped stone structure (N-S 2.1m int., E-W 1.7m), opening to N, which is embedded in S boundary wall of a supermarket carpark, 230m W of Shop St. Its interior was excavated to a depth of 2m in 1979 (information from E. Rynne). During the course of demolition work in 1987, further investigations revealed part of its curving outer wall face (D c. 3m ext.) and showed that it was at least 4.5m in height (information from P. Gosling). While its date and function are still uncertain, its resemblance to a late or post medieval wall turret is notable. It now contains a replica of the 'Chair of Tuam' (see GA029-172----). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
- GA029-175 Ritual site - holy well
Description
Along a dry stream bed in grassland on W outskirts of Tuam town (GA029-199----). Its name and representation on OS 6-inch maps suggest that this was a holy well. However, it could simply have taken its name from the 'Presbytery' marked on the maps 70m to NE. No visible surface trace survives. A holy well (GA029-177----) lies 160m to SSW, and a named well (GA029-176----) 125m to WSW. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
- GA029-176 Well
Description
On a stream close to its confluence with the River Nanny in NW suburbs of Tuam town (GA029-199----). Marked on 1st ed. OS 6-inch map but evidently gone by the time of 3rd ed. (1932). No visible surface trace survives. A possible holy well (GA029-175----) lies 125m to ENE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. - GA029-203 Burial mound
Description
In the centre of Tuam town (GA029-199----); formerly situated in a garden at the rear of the old Bank of Ireland premises on E side of Shop St., the site is now occupied by a supermarket car park. According to a strong local tradition, 'an ancient clay burial urn' was found here in the late 19th or early 20th C but was subsequently lost or disintegrated (Ó Murchú 1970, 7; Waldron 1973). The discovery was made while digging into what is variously described as a 'burial mound', 'tumulus' or 'cairn' (ibid.). According to one account (Ó Murchú 1970, 7), the 'mound' was removed at the time of the discovery. In 1979, prior to the supermarket development, Rynne investigated a low 'stony mound' in NE corner of the garden (Topgr. Files, UCG). Irregular in plan (E-W c. 5m, N-S c. 2.5m), it wad surmounted by a tree. Excavation revealed that it was 'merely a bit of 19th century garden landscaping' (ibid.). No trace survives. The 'mound' is strongly associated with 'The Chair of Tuam' (GA029-172----) and also lies on or close to the site of a castle (GA029-173----). (Waddell 1990, 96) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
