Description
Situated at the inner (S) side of a lip at the outer edge of a shelf on the N-facing slope of the Leean plateau, with cliffs (H c. 25m) rising over it c. 25m to the S and a small basin just to the S. It is hidden from the Glencar valley, which is to the N. This structure was first identified by Kytmannow as a booley-hut in Area G, and it is accompanied by three house sites. The structure is marked on the 1907 edition of the OS 6-inch map, and probably post-dates the other house sites. This is a rectangular structure (ext. dims 4.65m NW-SE: 3.6m NE-SW; Int. dims 3.35m NW-SE; 2.3m NE-SW) constructed with a double-faced drystone wall (Wth 0.6-0.7m; H 0.6-0.8m) with an entrance gap (Wth 0.6m) at the W end of the SW wall. Description
Marked only on the 1945 ed. of the OS 6-inch map where it is described in gothic lettering as ‘Megalith’. It is located towards the bottom of the N-facing slope of Glencar valley and on the E bank and in the shallow gully of a S-N stream. Two parallel limestone slabs set 0.5m apart (W stone: 1.3m x 0.3m; H 0.85m; E stone: 1.25m x 0.3m; H 0.75m) may be the remains of a chamber. Description
Situated on the lower N-facing slope of Glencar valley with a S-N gully (D c. 5m) immediately to the W and a cliff (H c. 10m) falling away to the N. This is a grass and scrub-covered subcircular area (int. dims 18m N-S; 14m E-W) defined by an earthen bank with slight traces of a fosse NE-S-SW and by cliffs elsewhere. The bank is best preserved at S (Wth 2.1m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.25m). Souterrain (LE007-05902-) is in the interior at NW. Situated on the lower N-facing slope of Glencar valley with a S-N gully (D c. 5m) immediately to the W and a cliff (H c. 10m) falling away to the N. An entrance (Wth 0.7m; H 0.9m) at the centre of rath (LE007-05901--) leads to a small lintelled passage (max. Wth 1.05m; H 1.4m; L 4m E-W) with an air-vent (dims 0.17m x 0.17m; L 0.8m) in the back wall. The air-vent opens onto the cliff at W on which the rath is situated. See the attached view looking E. Description
Situated at the N edge of a plateau overlooking Glencar valley. This is a circular cairn (diam. 12.5m; H 0.4 1.2m) with a quarry (diam. 6.8m) at the centre which reveals a large cist (dims 3.4m E W; 1.4m N S) with possibly a second cist (dims 1.2m E W; 1.4m N S) or a portico immediately to the E, although there are no roofing stones present. There is an open short cist (dims 0.9m x 0.65m) on the perimeter of the quarry at SW and a second cist with the lintel in place on the perimeter of the quarry at E. It is a possible wedge tomb. Situated on a knoll, which is on a NW-SE ridge with higher ground to the SE. It was first identified by Kytmannow, and could be the remains of a trigonometric station indicated on the 1907 edition of the OS 6-inch map. This is a circular grass-covered stony area (diam. 2m; H 0.2m) with a small spread of stones (dims 1.1m x 0.8m) just 1.5m to the SE that might have derived from it. Description
Situated on S facing slope of rising land in upland region. Square hut site (int. dims 2.8m N-S; 1.6m E-W) defined by grass-covered wall-footings built into the E face of field wall (T 0.8m) running N-S forming a large D-shaped enclosure (LE011-117----) into which the house is incorporated. The hut site and field wall form what appears to be the remains of a booley hut with a livestock enclosure. The hut site (LE011-137----) is 240m to WNW. This hut site and enclosure appears to date from the 18th-19th century although the dating of these features is impossible without archaeological excavation. It was first identified by Kytmannow as a hut-site in Area F, a cluster of five house sites within c. 10m of each other. This is a grass-covered rectangular area (ext. dims 5.55m NW-SE; 3.8m NE-SW; int. dims 3.8m NW-SE; 2.4m NE-SW) defined by a grass-covered earth and stone wall, but an entrance is not identified.
