- GA103-177 Ringfort - cashel
Description
On a gentle rise in undulating pastureland. Roughly circular cashel (diam. c. 21.9m), in fair condition, defined by a collapsed and overgrown drystone wall (base Wth 3.8m; Wth at top 0.9m; int. H 1m; ext. H 0.9m). No facing stones are visible. A gap at SSW appears to be modern. (Redington 1912a, 175; McCaffrey 1952, 205-6, no. 17) Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 24 April 2018
- GA103-178 Souterrain
Description
In pastureland. Named 'Cave' on the 1838 edition of the OS 6-inch map. On inspection in December 1982 no visible surface trace of this souterrain was evident. It was uncovered by a mechanical digger during the course of site preparation works for a septic tank in March 2000. Two roof lintels were displaced and as a result it was possible to access the souterrain (L 7.85m; Wth 0.98m H 1.12-1.67m), which runs ENW-WSW. Its walls were constructed of coursed limestone boulders and it was roofed with 10 lintels, 8 of which were in situ. Two wall cupboards were visible in the N wall and there was one in the S wall. The floor was covered with mud and loose stone. The souterrain is associated with a possible rath (GA103-178001-). Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 25 October 2019
- GA103-178001 Ringfort - rath
Description
In pastureland, in the SE corner of a field that is truncated to the E and S by field boundaries. Only the NW quadrant of this possible rath (estimated dims. c. 46m ENE-WSW; 34m NNW-SSE) is visible. It is defined by an earth and stone bank (Wth 3.2m; int. H 0.55m; ext. H 0.45) which curves from W to N (C 26m) and is obscured by vegetation. The interior slopes gently towards the SSE. There is a souterrain (GA103-178----) in the area of the SW quadrant. Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 25 October 2019
- GA103-179 Mill - unclassified
Description
On the S bank of the Kilcolgan River is a rectangular building (14m N-S; 6m E-W) defined by grassed-over oundation lines except at S where a gable wall containing two plain rectangular windows survives. Traces of a race, now filled with field clearance rubble, are visible within this structure. This is possibly the site of the medieval mill attached to the borough of Kilcolgan (Holland 1988, 81).
- GA103-180 Church
Description
On a S-facing slope overlooking the estuary of the Dunkellin River to the S and 'Weir Village' to the SW. This very poorly preserved church is located in the N half of a roughly L-shaped graveyard (GA103-180001-). All that survives is the W gable (int. Wth 4.8m) and the returns of the N (L 2.2m) and S (L 1.7m) side-walls. No architectural features are visible. Quantities of seashells, mainly oyster shells, have been revealed in the cutting of modern paths in the SW corner of the graveyard. (McCaffrey 1952, 206, no. 19). Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 3 April 2020
- GA103-180001 Graveyard
Description
On a S-facing slope overlooking the estuary of the Dunkellin River to the S and 'Weir Village' to the SW. This rectilinear graveyard (c. 74m NW-SE; c. 57m NE-SW) is enclosed by a stone wall. Access is gained at SE. The remains of a church (GA103-180----) occupy its N half. All the graveslabs and headstones date from the 18th century and later. Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 3 April 2020
- GA103-181 Ringfort - cashel
Description
On a rise in undulating pastureland. Redington (1912, 175) refers to a ‘circle of very large stones’ but she could not determine if ‘they had ever formed more than a single wall’. A souterrain (GA103-181001-) was centrally placed within the interior of the enclosure. McCaffrey (1952, 206) also noted the ‘souterrain and a surrounding ring of stones’ (diam. c. 33m) and he suggested that the ‘ring’ probably represented ‘one face of the surrounding wall’. No visible surface trace survives. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 10 July 2019
- GA103-181001 Souterrain
Description
Within the site of a possible cashel (GA103-181----). Described by Redington (1912b, 175) as 'a much ruined souterrain (here called an “uan”) of the usual type. It is 13ft [3.9m] long and 4ft [1.2m] wide …. Beyond W. end the chamber contracts to the width of a passage, 2ft [0.6m] wide by 6ft 1.8m] long'. No visible surface trace survives.
