- CO073-056 Quarry
Description

- CO073-123 Burial
Description
A small quantity of disarticulated skeletal remains of an adult male, probably over 45 years old at the time of death, was found in the NW quadrant of a burnt pit (CO073-147002-) that was excavated in advance of a housing development in 2003 (Ní Loingsigh 2006, 62-3). The bone, which was all from the upper part of the body, was in two deposits, c. 0.3m apart, and the pit was filled with soil containing charcoal and some limestone. The excavator concluded that the human remains appeared to have been redeposited in the pit, possibly after they were disturbed from their original place of interment, perhaps in the surrounding vicinity (ibid.). An analysis of the dentition suggests that this individual may have lived in the medieval period, if not earlier (ibid.). A slab-lined burial (CO085-131----) was discovered in the 1920s c. 700m to the SSW. Eighteen pits (CO073-147----) and another burnt pit (CO073-147001-) were also excavated in advance of the development (ibid.). (Ní Loingsigh 2003) The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009
- CO073-147 Excavation - miscellaneous
Description
In 2003 excavations carried out in advance of the construction of a large housing development in two fields on the S bank of the Bride River revealed eighteen widely spread pits. The pits varied in size (diam. 0.1-1.6m; D 0.07-0.46m) and were generally circular in shape. All but one of them contained a single fill of dark-brown (burnt) gravelly clay, with varying amounts of charcoal, burnt clay and/or heat-shattered stone. One of the pits (c. 3.5m x 1.3m) was trough-like and shallow and had a possible hearth at its centre. Six other pits (diam. 0.1-0.6m) occurred in an arc and were between 2m and 5.5m apart. In addition to the eighteen pits, a thin oval spread (1.1m N-S; 0.7m E-W; T 0.05m) of burnt soil containing metal slag and a piece of fired clay and a small roughly circular spread (diam. c. 0.4m; T 0.02m) of scorched soil containing charcoal were revealed. Two burnt pits (CO073-147001-, CO073-147002-) were also excavated in the vicinity, one of which contained a redeposited burial (CO073-123----) of medieval date or earlier. All of the excavated features had been truncated by ploughing. (Ní Loingsigh 2003; Ní Loingsigh 2006, 62-3) The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009
- CO073-147001 Burnt pit
Description
This burnt pit was excavated in 2003 in advance of the construction of a large housing development in two fields on the S bank of the Bride River. The circular pit (diam. 1.2m; D 0.42m), which had been truncated by ploughing, occurred in the SW part of the E field. It was filled with dark-brown charcoal-rich soil. At its centre, at a depth of c. 0.28m, there was a circular area (diam. c. 0.78m) with concentrations of red burnt clay and charcoal, possibly indicating in situ burning. Another burnt pit (CO073-147002-) was located c. 200m to the NW. The excavation also revealed a number of pits (CO073-147----) widely spaced throughout both fields. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009
- CO073-147002 Burnt pit
Description
This burnt pit was excavated in 2003 in advance of the construction of a large housing development in two fields on the S bank of the Bride River. The roughly oval pit (2.55m NNE-SSW; 1.7m WNW-ESE; D 0.6m), which had been truncated by ploughing, occurred in the NW part of the E field. It had a sloping base and was filled with dark brown soil containing charcoal and some limestone. The base of the NE corner of the pit was scorched, probably from in situ burning. A small quantity of redeposited disarticulated human skeletal remains (CO073-123----), of medieval date or earlier, was found in the NW quadrant of this pit. Another burnt pit (CO073-147001-) was located c. 200m to the SE. The excavation also revealed a number of pits (CO073-147----) widely spaced throughout both fields. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009
- CO085-015 Ecclesiastical site
Description
According to Lewis (1937, vol. 1, 89) Grange House 'occupies the site of Grange abbey (said to have been founded by St. Cear, who died in 679), and includes part of the ancient walls'; however no such foundation is listed by Gwynn and Hadcock (1988). Grange House is modernised 3-bay, 2-storey gable-ended house with recent extension to rear; no apparent features of ancient character. Local tradition agrees with Lewis that house built on site of abbey. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
- CO085-016 Ringfort - rath
Description
In tillage, above sharp E-facing fall down to stream. Hachured arc of SW quadrant of possible enclosure depicted on 1842, 1903 and 1940 OS 6-inch maps, with field fence forming SE quadrant (diam c. 30m). Levelled; no visible surface trace. Hartnett (1939, 133), recorded 'single ramparted fort 120 feet in overall diameter' but only SW quadrant remained and earth and stone field fence formed eastern boundary of site. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). - CO085-131 Slab-lined burial
Description
Found in gravel pit on Mr. Reid's land in December 1923 and recorded by Lee (1924, 74-5). Rectangular cist (long axis E-W) measured '5 feet in length and 2 feet in width' and was formed of 'surface stones', three at each side and one at each end (ibid.). Within, in extended position, were remains of an 'adult man, of tall stature' consisting of 'two femurs, two fibulae, two tibiae, part of pelvis, sacrum, some ribs, one humerus, all in a good state of preservation' (ibid., 75). The body had been placed upon 'smaller stones loosely spread upon the gravel bed, then covered by flags' (ibid.). Exact location not known; Lee was also informed by Mr. Reid of two other cists in the immediate vicinity, which also remain unlocated. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
