• RO028-161001 Castle - unclassified
  Description

  Marked as a circular embanked enclosure (ext. diam. c. 40m) on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, and situated at the W edge of a low-lying shelf in a karst landscape. The castle of Cloniberne was held by Hugh Mc Tirrelagh Roe, Tanaiste of O'Conor Roe, in 1585 (Freeman 1936, 163) but had been lost by him to Irish rebels by 1596 (Cronin 1980, 117). It is known locally as the castle, but a cannonball that was found here has since been lost. Rectangular grass-covered, stony mound (dims of base 25m N-S; c. 17m N-S; dims of top 17m N-S; c. 15m E-W) defined by scarps (H 0.8-1.7m), but the mound had been quarried, especially at E. It is surrounded by a fosse or quarry (Wth of top 9-11.4m; Wth of base 4-5.3m; D 0.2-0.3m N-E-S to 1.3m S-NW) with an irregular bank (Wth. 3-10m; H 0.3-1.1.5m) outside it S-W-NNE (max. ext. dims 38.5m N-S; 36m E-W). There is no dressed stone, or evidence of masonry walls anywhere. Field system (RO028-161002-) and settlement cluster (RO028-161003-) are immediately to the W. • RO028-161002 Field system
  Description

  On a low-lying karst landscape that steps down gently to the N. Grass-covered area of about 30 acres (c. 12 ha) contains relict field walls (Wth 1.5-3m; H 0.1-0.3m) which frequently follow the E-W steps of exposed rock outcrop. The fields are rectangular and fairly large (dims c. 50m x c. 30m to c. 100m x c. 100m) but become smaller (dims c. 20m x c. 20m) at the centre of settlement cluster (RO028-161003-). There is no evidence of ridge and furrow cultivation, but the settlement and field system are integrated and contemporary. • RO028-161003 Settlement cluster
  Description

  On one step of a low-lying karst landscape that steps down gently to the N. Grass-covered area of about 2 acres (c. 1 ha) within field system (RO028-161002-) contains the foundations of seven house-sites around two small fields (dims c. 20m x c. 20-30m). The houses are visible as rectangular areas defined by grass-covered stone spreads (Wth 1.2m; H 0.1-0.3m), rarely with visible facing stones. One large house (int. dims 14.4m E-W; 5.1m N-S) is c. 100m E of the main cluster and has one doorway (Wth 1.8m) towards the W end of the N wall. There are two two-room structures (int. dims 9.8-11.8m E-W; 2.8-3m N-S), and four rectangular one-room structures (int. dims 5-7m x 3-3.7m), sometimes with visible doorways (Wth 1-1.8m) that are integrated with the walls of the field system. In addition there is a small square structure (int. dims 3.1m E-W; 3m N-S) with a small yard (int. dims 6.5m E-W; 4m N-S) attached to the E. The yard is integrated with the field walls, and has an outhouse (int. dims 3m E-W; 1.1m N-S) with a doorway at W integrated into its perimeter at N beside the entrance to the yard.   At the outer edge of a shelf in a low-lying karst landscape and within the settlement cluster (RO028-161003-), although c. 100m NE of the main concentration. Rectangular grass-covered area (int. dims 7m E-W; 3.5m N-S) partly cut into the rock surface but defined by a stone spread (Wth 0.8-1m; H 0.1-0.4m) which may have an entrance (Wth 1.4m) at the W end of the N wall.   On a gentle SE-facing slope. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 24.8m E-W; 23.6m N-S) defined by a scarp with some bushes (H 0.6m at S to 1.25m at N), with a rounded fosse (Wth of top 7.6m; Wth of base 4m; ext. D 1-1.15m) SW-NW. Situated on the gentle S-facing slope of a broad hill, it is not visible at ground level in reclaimed pasture. Moated site (RO028-165001-) is c. 190m to the E.   Description

  On the gentle SE-facing slope of a broad hill. Rectangular grass-covered area (dims 61.3m E-W; 42m N-S) defined by earthen banks (Wth 2.2-3.2m; int. H 0.1-0.3m; ext. H 0.6m) on the N and E sides, and a scarp (H 0.35-1m) elsewhere. There are fosses (Wth of top 4.4-6m; Wth of base 2.1-3.7m; D 0.15-0.45m) on each side, but there is no visible entrance. Magnetic gradiometry conducted by the Discovery Programme in 2008 revealed an earlier enclosure or rath (RO028-165002-) inside the NW corner. The possible rath (RO029-164----) is c. 190m to the W.   On the gentle SE-facing slope of a broad hill and within the moated site (RO028-165001-). Magnetic gradiometry conducted by the Discovery Programme in 2008 revealed an earlier circular enclosure (diam. c. 30m) inside the NW angle, undoubtedly a rath.   Description

  On a low-lying level landscape. Described c. 1910 as a well with two small cairns adjacent (OS Name Book). Circular well (int. diam. 1.9m E-W; 1.7m N-S) defined by a drystone wall (Wth 0.75m; ext. H 0.6m), but with no evidence of veneration. It was known locally as St Bridget's Well (Gormley 1989, 62). There is the remains of a grass-covered penitential cairn (RO028-166002-) (diam. of top 5m NW-SE; 5m NE-SW; H 0.1-0.3m) immediately to the NW.
