  At the SW-facing crest of a NW-SE ridge. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 34.3m E-W; 33.8m N-S) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 2.4-2.6m; int. H 0.1-0.2m; ext. H 0.8-1.05m) separated by a rounded fosse (Wth of top 6.2-6.6m; Wth of base 3.3-4m; D 0.95-1.2m) from an outer bank (Wth 2.5-3.6m; H 0.2-0.5m), both of which only survive NNW-E-WSW. The entrance through the inner (Wth 1.6m) and outer (Wth c. 5m) banks and the causeway (Wth 2.5m) are at SE (max. ext. diam. 57m N-S), and the outer bank is removed by a NNE-SSW field bank WSW-NW.   At the crest of a N-facing slope. D-shaped grass-covered area (dims 44.7m N-S; 34.4m E-W) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 2-3.6m; int. H 0.3-0.5m; ext. H 0.9-1.6m) SSE-W-N, with a fosse (Wth of base 2.8m; D 0.1m) SSE-S. The monument is truncated by farm buildings at E (L 30m), and the perimeter cannot be traced N-NE. There are gaps at SSW (Wth 1.8m), SW (Wth 2.3m) and WNW (Wth 2m) but the original entrance cannot be identified. Souterrain (RO028-185002-) is in the interior. Discovered in 1983 when it appeared as a depression (L 3m; Wth 1.5m; D 0.5m) aligned N-S inside the perimeter at NW which turned E at its N end (L 5m) and then S (L 7m) (SMR file).   On the S bank of a W-E stream. Oval grass-covered area (int. dims 56m NE-SW; 39m NW-SE) defined by a grass-covered stone spread (Wth 2-3m; H 0.2-0.4m) SE-W-NW, and a stony scarp (H 0.35-0.5m) with no visible facing stones elsewhere.   Description

  Following a contour at the bottom of a N-facing slope, on the S side of a W-E stream. A millrace is visible as a grass-covered channel (Wth of base 1.5m; D 0.6m at SW; D 0.2m at NE) which is partly rock-cut and defined by the hillslope at W and S and by an earthen bank (Wth 2.2m; ext. H 0.7m) at E and N. It departs (L c. 30m) SE from a W-E stream and turns S (L c. 60m), SE (L c. 25m) and E (L c. 16m) before entering a marshy area that may have been a pond (dims c. 30m E-W; c.12m N-S). From this the mill-race runs N (L 5m), NE (L c. 28m) and SE (L 75m), running just S of cashel (RO028-187001-), and continues E (L c. 30m) before returning to the stream. There are two house sites (RO0280187005-; RO028-187006-) (int. dims 5.3m x 5m; 6.2m x 6.4m) defined by earthen banks (Wth c. 2m; H 0.3m) or scarps on a bluff c. 30m SE of the mill-pond, and a house site (int. dims c. 6m x c. 4.2m) defined by a stone spread or scarps, which may have been a mill-house, at the E end of the race on its S bank. On the N bank in Grange is a house site (RO028-187007-) (int. dims 7.5m E-W; 3.4m N-S) defined by low banks (Wth 05-0.9m; H 0.1-0.4m).   Description

  Towards the bottom of a N-facing slope and on the N side of a W-E stream. An area of about 20 acres (c. 8 ha) contains relict field banks (Wth c. 3m; H c. 0.2-0.5m) forming small irregularly-shaped fields (dims c. 50m x. c. 30m) which generally respect the course of the millrace (RO028-187002-), but two field banks are attached to the perimeter of cashel (RO028-187001-) and were cut by the millrace. Two house sites (RO028-187005-; RO028-187006-) are associated with the fields in Grange. The field system extends onto the N bank in Cloonyogan, and a house site (RO028-187007-) is located here. • RO028-204001 Barrow - mound barrow
  Description

  On a broad col with slightly higher ground to the NW and SE, and slightly lower ground to the NE and SW. Subcircular grass-covered mound (dims 20.6m N-S; 17.3m E-W; H 1.2m) which was excavated and reconstructed in 1966-7 (Ó Ríordáin 1997). It consisted of a cairn (RO028-204002-) (diam. 13m N-S; 14m E-W; H 1.5m) defined by a drystone facing (H up to 0.5m) with a line of kerbstones E-SE where cremated bone was recovered. Eight cists were recovered under the cairn, within it, and outside it, containing a total of eight Bowl Food Vessels, a fragment of a bowl, the cremated remains of fourteen individuals, and three inhumations. The cairn was covered in a clay mound (diam. c. 20m; H 1.5m), taking on the appearance of a mound barrow, and six secondary burial pits, largely in the mound, contained the cremated remains of ten individuals, fragments of two Vase Urns, an almost complete Vase Urn, a bowl, fragment of a bowl, a bone disc and a bronze dagger. Graves 1, 3, and 13 were in the old ground surface or the subsoil and probably pre-date the building of the cairn. Grave 2 was within the cairn close to its centre, and is probably contemporary with the building of the cairn. All the other cists and the pits appear to have been inserted in the cairn after the addition of the clay mantle. Grave 1 is a cist (RO028-204003-) (int. dims 0.56m E-W; 0.5m N-S; H 0.3m) with a capstone (dims c. 1.45m x c. 0.8m) which contained a bowl food vessel and scattered cremation set into the old ground surface c. 2m inside the perimeter of the cairn at NE. Grave 2 is a cist (RO028-204004-) (int. dims 0.85m E-W; 0.6m N-S; H 0.45) with a large capstone (dims c. 1.75m x c. 1.45m) which contained two bowl food vessels and the inhumed remains of two individuals. It was close to the centre within the cairn. Grave 3 is a cist (RO028-204005-) (int. dims 0.38m E-W; 0.35m N-S; H 0.35m) with a double capstone (dims c. 0.87m x c. 0.8m; T 0.35m) which contained a bowl food vessel and an inhumed child. It was set in the subsoil c. 1.2m outside the kerb at N. Grave 13 is a cist (RO028-204010-) (int. dims 0.84 N-S; 0.57m E-W; H 0.52m) with a capstone (dims. c. 1.5m x 1.15m) which contained two bowl food vessels and a large deposit of cremated bone. It was set in the subsoil just NW of the centre of the cairn. Grave 4 is a cist (RO028-204006-) (int. dims 0.5m N-S; 0.35m E-W; H0.3m) with a capstone (dims 0.8m x 0.75m) which contained a small amount of cremated bone. It had been inserted in the spill of the cairn at W, just outside the kerb. Grave 5 is a cist (RO028-204007-) (int. dims 0.7m NW-SE; 0.5m NE-SW; H 0.3m) with a capstone (dims 0.83 x 0.72m) which contained a cremation, a fragment of pottery and a bone pendant or bead. It was situated in the cairn spill at E and had been inserted into the mound. Grave 8 is a cist (RO028-204008-) (int. dims 1.17m N-S; 0.52m E-W; H 0.65m) with a capstone (dims. 2.25 N-S; 2m E-W; T 0.3m) which contained a bowl food vessel with a scattered cremation. It was inserted in the mound at E, inside the kerbstones of the cairn. Grave 8a is a cist (RO028-204009-) (int. dims 0.63m E-W; 0.44m N-S; H 0.27m) with a capstone (dims 1.05m x 0.95m) which contained a bowl food vessel and cremated deposit. Beneath the paving stones was further cremated material probably from the same event as those above. It is in the mound at SE. Grave 6 is a pit burial (RO028-204011-) containing cremated remains, fragment of a Vase Urn, and a pygmy cup. It was in the mound at S. Grave 7 is a pit burial (RO028-204012-) containing cremated bone, unburnt human and animal bone and is situated in the mound at the centre. Grave 9 is a pit burial (RO028-204013-) containing fragments of a Vase Urn and a small cremation deposit. It was in the mound just SE of the centre. Grave 10 is a pit burial (RO028-204014-) containing a Vase Urn inverted over a stone and containing a large cremation deposit including a bronze dagger with its bone pommel. It was inserted in the mound at SE. Grave 11 is a pit burial (RO028-204015-) with a small cremated deposit and stones. It was in the mound at E. Grave 12 is a pit burial (RO028-204016-) with a small deposit of cremated bone, a cockle shell and what might be a small starfish. It was in the mound at E. Radiocarbon determinations from graves 2, 3 and 10 provide a range from 2130-1850 Cal BC, or perhaps a wider range extending to 1700 Cal. BC.   Description

  At the outer edge of a shelf on a N-facing slope. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 51.2m E-W; 48.7m N-S) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 2.7-3.7m; int. H 0.2-0.4m; ext. H 0.3-0.8m). There is no visible fosse, and the entrance (Wth 1.8m) is at ESE. There is a hut-site (RO028-206010-) (ext. dims 5.3m E-W; 3.5m N-S) defined by a stone footing (H 0.3-0.4m) just S of the centre, and the rath is overlain by a WNW-ESE field wall N of the centre.   At the outer edge of a shelf with rock outcrop on a N-facing slope. The church (RO028-217002-) and graveyard (RO028-217004-) occupy the NE quadrant of a circular grass-covered enclosure (int. diam. 76m E-W; 70m N-S) is defined by an earthen bank (Wth 5m; H 0.1-0.2m) ENE-E, a scarp down to the interior (H 0.5m) SE-S and a grass-covered stone spread (Wth 3m; H 0.3-0.5m) with some outer facing stones S-NW. • RO028-217002 Church
  Description

  The townland name – Grange – suggests that it was once an out-farm for a religious institution and some of the land at least had belonged to the Cistercian abbey of Boyle (RO006-068005-)in the seventeenth century (Simington 1949, 58), but it may have been church land before that. It is situated at the outer edge of a shelf with rock outcrop on a N-facing slope. The church is a rectangular structure (int. dims 14.3m ENE-WSW; 6.1m WNW-SSE) whose walls (T 0.8m) barely survive (H c. 1m), apart from the featureless S wall (H 4m). It is situated at the W angle of a subrectangular graveyard (RO028-217004-) (dims c. 40m NW-SE; c. 31m NE-SW) defined by masonry walls (H 1-1.4m) but with a curved edge N-E which is on the perimeter of a subcircular grass-covered ecclesiastical enclosure (RO028-217001-) (int. dims 76m E-W; 70m N-S). This is defined by an earthen bank (Wth 5m; H 0.1-0.2m) ENE-E, a scarp down to the interior (H 0.5m) SE-S and a grass-covered stone spread (Wth 3m; H 0.3-0.5m) with some outer facing stones S-NW. The perimeter is damaged by quarries E-SE and NW-N. Field system (RO028-217005-) is attached to the SW. Archaeological testing (04E0304) c. 150m to the S (Read 2007e) and also (04E1019) c. 200m to the SW (Carey 2007) failed to produce any related material. Two rectangular fields (dims c. 100m x c. 50m) defined by relict earthen banks (Wth c. 3m; H 0.2-0.5m) cover an area of about 9 acres (c. 3.5 ha) and appear to be attached to the perimeter of the ecclesiastical enclosure (RO028-217001-).   Towards the bottom of a NW-facing slope. Grass-covered but poached oval mound (dims 10m NE-SW; 8.4m NW-SE; H 1.2-1.5m), from which St Patrick preached while travelling from Ogulla (RO022-106----) to Oran (RO034-080----), according to local tradition.   Description

  On a broad NW-SE ridge. Aerial photographs (CUCAP: AJN 89,90) show an area of about 10 acres (c. 4 ha) with a series of at least six small rectangular fields (dims c. 20m x c. 20m to c. 30m x 30m) at its centre.
