  Description

  On a gentle N-facing slope. Described as a circular area (diam. 32m) defined by an earth and stone bank, a rounded fosse and an outer bank. There was an entrance and causeway at ESE, and the remnants of a rectangular structure in the centre which was regarded locally as a castle (RO035-009003-) (Gannon 1972). The castle of Ballinderry was held by Edward White in 1585 (Freeman 1936, 164), but he had lost it to rebels by 1596 (Cronin 1980, 117). The rath was removed in 1984, and the owner fined under the National Monuments Acts. It is not visible at ground level in reclaimed pasture, but it is visible as a vegetation mark on aerial photograph (ASIAP (228) 35). Rath (RO035-008----) is c. 130m to the N.   On a gentle N-facing slope, in the interior of rath (RO035-009001-). Gannon (1972) describes the remnants of a rectangular stone setting, which may have been the castle (RO035-009003-).   Description

  The castle of Ballenderry was held by Edward White in 1585 (Freeman 1936, 164), but had been lost by him to rebels by 1596 (Cronin 1980, 117). On a gentle N-facing slope. According to Gannon (1972), the rath (RO035-009001-) was locally regarded a castle and the rectangular structure in the interior was probably it. It is no longer extant. • RO035-010001 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  On a gentle N-facing slope. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 43m E-W; 42.6m N-S) defined by an earth and stone bank (Wth 4.4-6m; int. H 0.2-0.7m; ext. H 1.9-2.1m) separated by a rounded fosse (Wth of top 7-8.4m; Wth of base 1.5-3.8m; D 0.85-1.6m) from an outer bank (Wth 2.5-3.7m; H 0.2-0.45m), which is overgrown NW-E. There is an entrance through the inner (Wth 8m) and outer (Wth 7.6m) banks and a causeway (Wth 3m; H 0.25-0.4m) at NE. The inner bank has been quarried back (D 5m) WNW-NNW (max. ext. dims 60.2m E-W; 59m N-S). Rath (RO035-011----) is c. 100m to the SSE. See the attached aerial image taken from the NW.   Description

  On a gentle N-facing slope. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 31m N-S) defined by an earth and stone bank (at W: Wth 4.9-5.3m; int. H 0.4-0.8m; ext. H 1.8m), which is overgrown NW-NE and E-SE, separated by a rounded fosse (Wth of top 6.1-6.6m; Wth of base 1.2-1.7m; D 1.5m at W) from an outer bank (Wth 2-3.3m; H 0.4m) which survives SSW-N-SE, but is overgrown NW-NE and is overlain by a drystone wall SW-N. The inner bank is quarried away N-NE and SSE-SSW. There is no identifiable original entrance. Rath (RO035-010001-) is c. 100m to the NNW and rath (RO035-012----) is c. 60m to the SSE.   On a gentle N-facing slope. Subcircular grass-covered area (dims 46.5m E-W; 41m N-S) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 5.6-7.3m; int. H 0.45m at E to 1-1.2m generally; ext. H 2.2-3.2m) and a rounded fosse (Wth of top 7-8.2m; Wth of base 1.7-2.6m; D 1.1-1.4m). There is an entrance (Wth 1.3m) and causeway (Wth 1.1m; H 1.1m) at NE (max. ext. dims 62m E-W; 55.8m N-S).   Towards the bottom of an E-facing slope. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 34m E-W; 31m N-S) defined by an earth and stone bank (at S: Wth 4.6m; int. H 0.6m; ext. H 1.7m) with some scrub which has been quarried NW-NE, and a rounded fosse (at S: Wth of top 7.2m; Wth of base 2m; D 0.3m). There is an entrance (Wth 2.8m) and causeway (Wth 3.3m; H 0.5m) at NE, and the monument is bisected by an ENE-WSW field wall (max. ext. diam. 50m N-S).   Description

  On the crest of a slight E-W ridge. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 37m E-W; 34m N-S) defined by an earthen bank and hedge (Wth 3.2m at E to 4.7-5.5m generally; int. H 0.3m at E to 0.7-0.8m generally; ext. H 1.7-1.9m) and an outer fosse (Wth of top 6-6.5m; Wth of base 1.8-2.6m; D 0.4-0.6m) NNE-S-NW, but the perimeter is reduced to a scarp (H 1m) and the fosse is missing elsewhere.   Description

  On the S-facing slope of a slight E-W ridge. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 36m N-S; 34.1m E-W) defined by an earthen bank and hedge (Wth 4.6-5.2m; int. H 0.5m at S to 1.4m at N; ext. H 1.3m at N to 1.9m at S) and an outer rounded fosse (Wth of top 5.3-8m; Wth of base 1.8-2.2m; D 0.2m at S to 0.6m at N). It is circumvented by a farm track SW-NW where the bank (Wth 3m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 1m) and fosse (Wth of top 4m; Wth of base 1.5m; D 0.3m) are reduced in dimension. The entrance (Wth 1.8m) is at SE. Rath (RO035-016----) is c. 50m to the NNE.   Description

  On a gentle E-facing slope. D-shaped grass-covered area (dims 40.3m N-S; 40m E-W) defined by a rounded but overgrown fosse (at W: Wth of top 8.3m; Wth of base 4.7m; int. D 1.4m; ext. D 1m) WSW-N, and by a scarp (H 0.85m at S to 1.65m) elsewhere. The perimeter of the platform has been truncated at NE by a NW-SE field wall, and the perimeter has been cut back SSE-SW to create a passage between it and a NW-SE field bank. Souterrain (RO035-041002-) is inside the perimeter at N and there is a small clearance cairn (RO035-041003-) (dims 4.6m E-W; 3m N-S; H 0.4m) near the centre. • RO035-042001 Church
  Description

  The parish church of Kilbride, listed as Kilbriada in the ecclesiastical taxation of Elphin in 1306 (Cal. doc. Ire., vol. 5, 223) and described as ruinous in 1635 (Simington 1949, 24). The settlement of Kilbready is marked on the Strafford map of Ballintober South barony c. 1636 (ibid. b). The church is situated on rock outcrop towards the bottom of an E-facing slope. It is a rectangular structure (int. dims 29.3m E-W; 6.5m N-S) defined by ivy-covered N (max. H 3.2m) and S (H 0.9m) walls. The W wall has almost disappeared but the E wall has twin lancet windows which are missing at the top but the head of a round-headed window (RO035-042004-) (Corlett 1998, 138) is in the graveyard, and there was a window towards the E end of the S wall. The church is within a circular graveyard (RO035-042002-) (diam. c. 50m) defined by a drystone wall. There are shallow quarries outside the graveyard N-E-S, but some relict field walls (RO035-042003-) approach the graveyard at SW and W (L c. 50m). Rath (RO035-041001-) is c. 120m to the NW.   The parish church of Kilbride (RO035-042001-), situated on rock outcrop towards the bottom of an E-facing slope, is within a circular graveyard (diam. c. 50m) defined by a drystone wall, and contains a round-headed window head (RO035-042004-).   Description

  The parish church of Kilbride (RO035-042001-), situated on rock outcrop towards the bottom of an E-facing slope. There are quarries outside the graveyard (RO035-042002-) N-E-S, but some relict field walls (L c. 50m) approach the graveyard at SW and W. The settlement of Kilbready, represented on the Strafford map of 1636 (Simington 1949, map B) would be in the vicinity of the church and elements of it may survive in an area of about 15 acres (c. 6ha) amongst the quarries.
