  Marked as a circular embanked enclosure (ext. diam. c. 40m) on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map and as a circular wooded feature (diam. c. 40m) on the 1928 ed. Situated at the summit of a broad hill, and described as a low mound and ditch that may have been a ring-barrow (Gannon 1972), it is not visible at ground level in reclaimed pasture.   On a gentle NE-facing slope. Described in 1978 as an overgrown circular area (diam. c. 24m N-S; 23m E-W) defined by a low earthen bank with faint traces of an outer fosse (SMR file). The monument was overlain by an E-W field wall, and a N-S field wall overlay the perimeter at W with a house site (RO035-060002-) against the inside of the bank at SW.   Description

  On a NE-facing slope. Described in 1978 as a grass-covered oval area (dims 39m E-W; c. 33m N-S) defined by a scarp with the remains of an earthen bank on top and a narrow ditch at its base. It was best preserved S-W and had a drystone wall outside it SE-W-NW (SMR file). There was no identifiable original entrance. • RO035-063 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Marked on the 1837 and 1928 eds of the OS 6-inch map and described in gothic lettering on both as Aghnamallaght fort - the fort of the ford of curses. Situated on a SE-facing slope overlooking the headwaters of a SW-NE stream that feeds into the Scramoge River. This is a circular grass-covered area (diam. 45.2m NW-SE; 45.2m NE-SW) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 4.5m at SW to 9.3m at NW; int. H 0.45-1.4m; ext. H 1.7-1.8m) and hedge WSW-NE which is reduced to a scarp (H 1.25m) elsewhere. There is a rounded fosse (Wth of top 8.5-9m; Wth of base 3.3-4.5m; ext. D 0.2m at SW to 1-1.1m generally) which has faded away ENE-SE. There are gaps in the bank at WNW (Wth 2m) and N (Wth 1.5m), but the original entrance cannot be identified (max. ext. diam. 62.8m NE-SW). Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010

  Description

  At the bottom of a N-facing karst ridge. Oval, grass-covered area (max. int. dims c. 70m N-S; 55m E-W) defined by a rebuilt drystone wall (Wth 1.5m at NE to 2.8m at W; H 0.2-0.9m), but the original double facing survives (Wth 3.2m) at SE. From S-SW the inner face of the wall (H 1.8m) is built on a limestone shelf (H 1.7m). There is an entrance (Wth 2.8m) at NNW. The interior is bisected by a NNW-SSE drystone wall, and there is a rectangular house site (RO035-064012-) (int. dims 7.6m NE-SW; 4.4m NW-SE) defined by a grass-covered stone spread (Wth 0.9-2m; H 0.25-0.4m) just E of the centre.   Description

  Marked on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map as a rectangular enclosure described in gothic lettering as a 'Cashel'. It is situated on a N-facing karst slope. Subcircular grass-covered area (int. dims 33.5m NE-SW; 33.5m NW-SE) defined by the grass-covered remains of a stone wall (Wth 1.2m; H 0.2-0.4m), but the original base of the double-faced wall is visible at NW (Wth 1.8-2m). There is a modern entrance (Wth 2m) at ENE. At the centre is a rectangular house site (RO035-064003-) (int. dims 6m NNE-SSW; 3.2m WNW-ESE) defined by the footings of the two long walls (Wth 1-1.6m).   On a NW-facing terrace of a karst slope. Subcircular, grass-covered area (int. dims 31.5m NE-SW; 27.5m NW-SE) defined by the scant remains of a grass-covered double-faced stone wall (original Wth 1.5m; H 0.2-0.6m) which has gaps at SW (Wth 6m) and ESE (Wth 4m). There is a curving depression (dims 9.6m E-W; 6m N-S; D 1.5m), probably a quarry, surrounded by the remains of two drystone walls inside the perimeter at N.   On a NW-facing terrace of a karst slope. Circular overgrown area (int. diam. 22.5m) defined by a stone spread (Wth 3.5m; H 0.5-0.65m) with an entrance (Wth 1.8m) at WNW. The remains of a drystone-built house (RO025-064013-) (int. dims 3.8m N-S; 2m E-W) are in the W quadrant. This cashel is connected to cashel (RO035-064004-) which is c. 10m to the W by the remains of a stone wall (Wth 1.6m; H 0.2-0.4m), and a similar wall extends off to the S.   On a N-facing slope. D-shaped, grass-covered area (dims c. 33m N-S; c. 20m E-W) defined by an earthen bank (at W: Wth 6.8m; int. H 0.7m; ext. H 1.6m) and fosse (at W: Wth of base 1.8m; D 0.55m) S-W-N. There is an oval pond (dims. 14m N-S; 8m E-W; D 0.6m) in the interior, and the monument is truncated at E by a N-S field bank and road. Rath (RO035-066----) is c. 130m to the ESE. Archaeological testing (03E0749), c. 50m to the SE (Read 2006h), and further testing (05E0042) c. 70m to the S (Byrne, M.   On the N-facing slope of a W-E spur. Described as a circular area (diam. 43m E-W; 42.5m N-S) defined by an earthen bank, with internal facing-stones at NW, and a fosse (Gannon 1972). It is not now visible at ground level in pasture, but is visible as a vegetation mark (diam. c. 40m) on aerial photograph (ASIAP (228) 27). Rath (RO035-065----) is c. 130m to the WNW.   Description

  On a gentle S-facing slope. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 65.5m E-W; 60.2m N-S) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 2-4.2m; int. H 0.3-0.4m; ext. H 0.6-1.4m) with some bushes, separated by a rounded fosse (Wth of top 6.7-8m; Wth of base 3-3.6m; D 0.3-1.1m) from a central scrub-covered earthen bank (Wth of base 2-4.7m; ext. H 0.3-1.1m). This is separated by a rounded fosse (Wth of top 6.8-10.3m; Wth of base 3.2-5.7m; ext. D 1.2m) from an third scrub-covered bank (Wth 4.1-5.2m; ext. H 0.2m) that does not survive ENE-ESE or SSE-SSW (max. ext. diam. 96m E-W). There is no identifiable original entrance, but it may have been SSE-S where the three banks are removed or interrupted.   Description

  On the N-facing slope of a plateau of karst limestone. An area of c. 23 ha (c. 90 acres) contains some large rectangular fields (dims c. 100m x c. 50m) but there are also numerous smaller rectangular or irregularly-shaped fields (dims c. 30-40m x 30-40m). The fields are defined by grass and fern-covered stone spreads (Wth 2-3m; H 0.2-0.4m). The cashel (RO036-018002-) within the complex is connected to a field wall, and cashel (RO036-018005-) at its S extent is also connected to field walls. The road (RO036-018001-) is integral to the fields but some field walls overlie it. One house site (RO036-018004-) (int. dims 7m E-W; 3.7m N-S) defined b y a double-faced stone wall (Wth 0.8m) with an entrance (Wth 0.7m) at the W end of the N wall has been identified, but there may be others. Situated on a gentle N-facing slope. This is a subrectangular grass-covered area (dims c. 54m NW-SE; c. 30m NE-SW) defined by an arc of grass-covered earthen bank (Wth 5.3m; H 0.2-0.3m) at SE, a low scarp (H 0.4m) at NE, a shallow fosse or ditch (Wth 2m; D 0.25m) at NW and a NW-SE road wall at SW.   Description

  Towards the bottom of a gentle E-facing slope. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 40.5m N-S; 37.4m E-W) defined by an earthen bank (at E: Wth 5.4m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 1.1m) NNE-ESE and SSW-WSW, which is reduced to a scarp (H 0.5m S-W to 1.5m at N) elsewhere. It is surrounded by a rounded fosse (Wth of top 7.3-8m; Wth of base 2.7-3.3m; D 0.2-0.5m) WNW-E-WSW, but its outer edge is clipped by a NW-SE field bank at NE. There is a break in the bank (Wth 3.2m) at NE, but the original entrance is at ESE where there is a causeway (Wth 3.2m).
