• RO028-206001 Ringfort - cashel
  Description

  At the E edge of a broad plateau. D-shaped grass-covered area (int. dims 22.8m N-S; 22.1m E-W) defined by a grass-covered stone spread (Wth 2-3.8m; int. H 0.2-0.3m; ext. H 0.3-0.4m) with occasional facing stones (original Wth 1.3m at E). There is an external quarry ditch (Wth of top 5m; Wth of base 2.4m; D 0.3m) S-NW, but the perimeter is truncated at N (L 16m) by the S bank of an E-W road (RO028-206003-) of field system (RO028-206002-). There is no identifiable original entrance, but there is a grass-covered clearance cairn (diam. 3.8m; H 0.5m) N of the centre. House site (RO028-206013-) is outside the perimeter at SE. • RO028-206002 Field system
  Description

  On a broad plateau with a slight E-facing slope. An area of c. 25 ha with rock outcrop at its E edge has the remains of large rectangular fields (dims c. 200m x c. 100m) and contains, but probably post-dates cashel (RO028-2060001-) and rath (RO028-206008-). A meandering E-W roadway (RO028-206003-) (Wth 7m; original L c. 450m) defined by earthen banks (Wth 2-3m; 0.2-0.5m) survives in its central portion, S of a modern WNW-ESE field wall, and its S bank truncates the N side of cashel (RO028-206001-). It can be traced further E (L c. 160m) and W (L c. 100m) where it less well-defined. Much of the N part of the fields do not survive, but two house sites (RO028-206014-; RO028-206015-) are recorded there. However, about 50 acres (c. 20 ha) at the S survives, including the settlement cluster (RO028-206007-) at the E edge of the fields, which is probably contemporary with them. • RO028-206003 Road - road/trackway
  Description

  On a broad plateau with a slight E-facing slope. An meandering E-W roadway (Wth c. 8m; original L c. 450m) defined by earthen banks (Wth 2-3m; H 0.2-0.5m) survives in its central portion (L c. 170m), S of a modern ENE-WSW field wall, and its S bank truncates cashel (RO028-206001-) at N. It can be traced further E (L c. 160m) and W (L c. 100m) where it less well-defined. It is part of the field system (RO028-206002-) and contemporary with the settlement (RO028-206007-).   Description

  At the E edge of a plateau, and associated with field system (RO028-20602-). An area of about 4 acres (c. 1.5 ha) contains at least three house sites with associated yards and the cashel (RO028-2006001-), although the area has been damaged by quarries. It is S of the surviving central part of road (RO028-2006003-) and associated with the extensive field system (RO028-206002-). A house-site (int. dims 5.8m E-W; 5.6m N-S) defined by earthen banks (Wth 1-2m; H 0.1-0.3m) with outer drains (Wth 3m; max. D 0.7m) at S and W and the edge of a quarry at S. SE of the quarry is a house site (RO028-206011-) of two rooms (ext. dims. 16m N-S; 11. 5m E-W) with a rectangular enclosure (dims 18m N-S; 11m E-W) to its W. Immediately S is a second house site (RO028-206012-) of two rooms (int. dims 15m N-S; c. 10m E-W) with a rectangular enclosure (dims 22m E-W; 20m N-S) to its W. Another house to the S has been removed by a quarry, but its rectangular enclosure (dims 33m E-W; 20m N-S) to the W survives. See the attached aerial image taken from the N.   On a slight SW-facing slope. Circular grass-covered and flat-topped mound (diam. of top 9m; diam. of base 12m; H 0.3-0.6m) surrounded by a flat-bottomed fosse (Wth of base 3.2-3.3m; D 0.25m) and an earthen bank (Wth 3.7-4.2m; H 0.15m) which is best preserved (Wth 3.2m; int.   Description

  On a gentle W-facing slope. Subcircular grass-covered, slightly domed mound (dims of top 9.6m E-W; 8.4m N-S; dims of base 13.5m E-W; 12.4m N-S; H 0.1-0.2m) defined by a shallow fosse (Wth of top 5.6-7.6m; Wth of base 1.4-2.7m; D 0.05-0.15m) and an outer bank (Wth 3.2-5.3m; H 0.05m).   On a broad plateau. Circular, grass-covered and slightly domed mound (diam. of base 15.8m N-S; 14.6m E-W; diam. of top 10.5m N-S; 10.3m E-W; H 0.3-0.5m) defined by a rounded fosse (Wth of top 8.6-9m N-E to 13m at S; Wth of base 4.5.4m; D 0.2-0.3m). Two relict field banks (RO035-115002-) (Wth c. 3m; H 0.1-0.2m) placed 12m apart approach the monumnet from the N (L 14m; 44m), that on the E running outside the fosse and continuing off to the SE (L c. 30m).
