Description
On the crest of the N-facing slope of an esker. A lintelled and corbelled chamber (dims 4.9m N-S; 1.5m E-W; max. H 1.5m) is entered through the roof at N, with a creep which is now blocked (L at least 2.2m) leading S from the SW corner. The creep may have led to a chamber running E from its S end which is visible as a depression (dims 8m E-W; 5.5m N-S; max. D 1.3m) on the surface. A depression (dims 6m E-W; 1.7-2.5m N-S) running W from the present entrance is unconnected with the souterrain, which was damaged during 2007. The monument was slightly damaged in 2007, after which an exclusion zone was established around it but archaeological testing (14E0188) outside the zone produced no related material (Crumlish 2015). - RO051-017001 Castle - tower house
Description
This is a castle of the Mc Keoghs, descendents of Donnchad Mac Niocal Og (Moore 1974-5; 1987). The castle of Castlesawson had been lost by Melaghlin McKeogh to Irish rebels by 1596 (Cronin 1980, 117) but was sold by his death in 1604 to Thomas Dillon of Curraghboy (Moore 1978, 56). Over 400 acres at Castlesampson was owned by Richard Dillon in 1640, which he retained in the 1660s (Simington 1949, 104). Situated on a rise in an undulating landscape. The base of the walls, except the N, of a rectangular structure (int. dims 13.2m E-W; c. 10m N-S) survive. The S wall partly survives (max. H 5m) with a base-batter and evidence of an E-W barrel vault. The SE angle projects and probably contained a garderobe. The remains of a bawn (RO051-017002-) (dims 18.3m E-W; 11.7m N-S) defined by stone spreads is attached to the S, and some dressed stone (RO051-017003-) is found in nearby field walls. Archaeological testing (06E0775) c. 80m to the W produced no related material (Tierney and Maginness 2006). A full suite of remote sensing surveys conducted in the vicinity produce evidence of a palimpsest of possible cut or stone features, some of which may be agricultural or geological in original but which testify to a potentially complex development history, including a possible enclosing fosse (Gimson and Regan 2014). Marked on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map where it is described as an Infant Burial Ground, and situated on an E-facing slope in an undulating landscape. The structure contains some grave-markers and has an entrance (Wth 1.75m) towards the S end of the W wall. Description
Visible on aerial photographs (GSIAP: M 228-9), and situated on the crest of a NNW-SSE section of an esker ridge. This is an oval grass and scrub-covered area (dims 42.7m E-W; 34.6m N-S) defined by an overgrown spread of stone, with facing-stones visible at SE (original Wth 2m; H 0.5m). A gap at E may be original, but could be associated with modern pens against the inner edge of the perimeter at S. A relict N-S wall survives within the monument towards the perimeter at W, and there are some relict walls outside the enclosure at W. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010
