Recorded monuments
- RO047-058001 Castle - unclassified
Description
This is a Fallon castle, and Covaghe O'Failone of Milltown is listed in 1585 (O'Donovan 1843, 19) while Redmond O'Fallon had possession in 1587 (Cronin 1980, 118). A castle at Milltown is marked on the Strafford map of Athlone barony (c. 1636), and Redmond Mc Redmond Ffallon owned two quarters amounting to 500 acres there in 1641 but this land passed to Sir Luke Dowdall through the Cromwellian settlement (Simington 1949, 107, Athlone (170)). This monument might be Onagh castle which was built by the Justiciar in 1236 at Mullach Uanaidhe, although the ringwork at Dundonnell (RO051-047002-) is more probable. Onagh was attacked by Aedh O'Conchobair in 1270 but was probably still occupied in 1284. The castle is situated on a slight rise on the SE bank of the Ballyglass stream which here flows NE-SW in a canalised stream through low-lying basins to the NE and SW. The keep (int. dims c. 11m E-W; 8m N-S), of which the N wall (T 2.5m) is partly visible survives to a max. H of c. 6m but is obscured in a large cairn (diam. c. 40m; H up to 6m) which is within a wedge-shaped ward or bawn (RO047-058022-) (dims c. 75m N-S; c. 30m E-W at N; c. 70m E-W at S). The bawn is defined by a spread of stone and wall footings (Wth 0.75-1m) except at the N, and two towers can tentatively be identified, at the NW angle and at the centre of the S wall. An out-turned entrance and outer causeway (L 10m; Wth 3.5m) on the E wall leads to an outer wedge-shaped ward (dims c. 90m E-W; c. 80m N-S) which might not have been completed. The outer ward is defined by less substantial walls on the SE and NE sides backing onto the stream at W, and two rectangular towers can be identified, on the SE wall and at the E angle. There are four rectangular buildings within the inner bawn. Just S of the entrance causeway is a large rectangular structure (RO047-058023-) (int. dims c. 9m N-S; c. 6m N-S) with another structure immediately to its W (RO047-058024-) (int. dims c. 8m N-S; c. 3.3m E-W). About 10m further W is a smaller square building (RO047-058025-) (int. dims 4m x 3.5m) while a fourth building (RO047-058026-) (int. dims 10.2m NE-SW; 3.5m NW-SE) is inside the W wall of the bawn. The castle probably pre-dates the field system (RO047-058027-) which surrounds it, and three rectangular structures (int. dims c. 7m x c. 4m) are c. 80-100m to the E. See the attached aerial images taken from the NW (002) and SW (003). Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010
- RO047-058002 Ringfort - cashel
Description
Visible as a large stone-walled enclosure (diam. c. 45m) on aerial photographs (CUCAP: BDO 31-2) although the perimeter is incomplete N-E. Situated on a rise overlooking Milltown castle (RO047-058001-) c. 180m to the NW and low-lying basins to the W and N. It is not visible now at ground level in reclaimed pasture. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010
- RO047-058007 Enclosure
Description
Visible as a small enclosure (diam. c. 20m) on aerial photograph (CUCAP: K17 W13), and situated on a small rise in an undulating landscape of limestone outcrop. It is not visible at ground level in reclaimed pasture. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010
- RO047-058009 Ringfort - cashel
Description
Visible as a circular feature on aerial photograph (CUCAP: K17 W12), and situated on an undulating landscape with limestone outcrop. This is an oval scrub-covered area (dims c. 27.5m NNW-SSE; 23m ENE-WSW) defined by a stone spread (at S: Wth 5.8m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.9m) with facing-stones evident only at NW (original Wth 1.9m). The perimeter is overlain by a field wall N-SE and there is no identifiable original entrance. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010
- RO047-058011 Enclosure
Description
Visible on vertical aerial photograph (CUCAP: K17 W10). Oval grass and scrub-covered area defined by a collapsed drystone wall but there is nothing to indicate that this is any different to the other 18-19th century field walls in the area and that this is a small plot or garden of that era. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010
- RO047-058012 Ringfort - cashel
Description
On a rise in an undulating landscape with limestone outcrop, just to N of a knoll. Circular overgrown area (int. diam. 30m NNW-SSE; 29m ENE-WSW) defined by a stone spread with facing-stones, best preserved S-SSE (original Wth 1.9-2m; max. H 0.75m). There is no identifiable original entrance but a circular hut-site (RO047-058018-) defined by a stone spread (int. diam. 2.4m; ext. diam. 8.4m) is inside the perimeter at WSW. A fragment of a rotary quern is at the monument. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010
- RO047-058013 Enclosure
Description
Visible as an enclosure on vertical aerial photograph (CUCAP: K17 W 10). This is an oval area (int. dims 27m NW-SE, 20.5m NE-SW) defined by a drystone-built wall and with lazy-beds in the interior. The enclosure is part of the 18-19th century field pattern of the area. It was removed before 2000 (OSAP). Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010
- RO047-058018 Hut site
Description
On a rise in an undulating landscape with limestone outcrop, just N of a knoll. This is a circular hut-site defined by a stone spread (int. diam. 2.4m; ext. diam. 8.4m) inside the perimeter of cashel (RO047-058012-) at WSW. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010
- RO047-058019 Headstone
Description
On a slight rise overlooking Milltown Castle (RO047-058003-) and low ground to the N. This is a limestone slab (dims 1.43m x 0.68m; T 0.3m) lying prone and bearing 'IHS' and an illegible inscription, believed locally to mark the burial place of a Bishop Fallon. It is probably 18th century in date. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010
- RO047-058020 Field system
Description
On a hillock in an undulating landscape. An area of about 21 acres (c. 8.5 ha) contains relict field walls consisting of the bases of drystone walls and forming irregular small fields (dims c. 20m x c. 10m) with larger irregular fields (dims c. 80m x c. 20m). No house sites or lazy beds were identified, and it is probably post-medieval in date. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010
- RO047-058022 Bawn
Description
On the SE bank of the NE-SW Ballyglass stream around castle (RO047-058001-). This is a wedge-shaped area (dims c. 75m N-S; c. 30m E-W at N; c. 70m E-W at S). It is defined by a spread of stone and wall footings except at the N, and two towers can tentatively be identified, at the NW angle and at the centre of the S wall. The outer ward is defined by less substantial walls on the SE and NE sides backing onto the stream at W, and two rectangular towers can be identified, on the SE wall and at the E angle.
