Description
A building and a mill are marked on the Strafford map of c. 1636 on the S bank of a short W-E stream flowing into Lough Ree at Carnagh Bay (Simington 1949, Athlone (244)). Just 10m S of the mill (RO046-012002-) is a conserved rectangular structure (ext. dims 11m E-W; 5.4m N-S) defined by masonry walls (H 1.2m) with a fireplace in the E wall which is known locally as the miller's house. Description
Marked on the Strafford map of c. 1636, and a mill owned by Sir Luke Dillon and others in 1641 had passed to Erasmus Smith later in the 17th century (Simington 1949, Athlone (244) 98). It is marked as a functioning corn and tuck mill on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. Situated on the S bank of a short W-E stream flowing into Lough Ree at Carnagh Bay, and just W of a bridge. The stream is stone-lined (Wth 1.4m; D 1m at S; 2m at N) with part of the N (L c. 3m; H c. 2m) and E (L c. 2m; H 1.5m) walls of a structure represented by a cairn (dims 6m N-S; 6m E-W; H 0.6m at S) and known locally as O'Brien's mill. Just 10m S and on the other side of a NE-SW section of road is a rectangular structure (RO046-012001-) (ext. dims 11m E-W; 5.4m N-S) defined by masonry walls (H 1.2m) with a fireplace in the E wall that is known locally as the millers house. Description
On a slight SW-facing slope. This is a D-shaped grass-covered area with some bushes (int. dims 23m NW-SE; 16m NE-SW) defined by the base of a double-faced stone wall (Wth 1.25-1.35m; max. H 0.65m) SE-W-NW. The monument is truncated at NE by a NW-SE field wall and does not survive to NE of this, but there is a stone-lined entrance (Wth 1.65m) at SSW. The interior has stone grave-markers and cairns from a children's burial ground (RO045-157002-), and a bullaun stone (RO045-157001-) (dims 0.4m x 0.3m; H 0.27m) with a single basin (diam. 0.22m; D 0.07m). Description
Marked as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 30m) on the 1837 and 1915 eds of the OS 6-inch map, and described as a pound on the 1837 ed. Situated on a gentle NE-facing slope in an undulating landscape.
