Description
Marked as a small island on the 1915 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, and situated on a rise at the SW shore of the turlough Lough Croan (dims c. 3 km NW-SE; c. 200-300m NE-SW). This is a circular spread of boulders (diam. 25m N-S; 25m E-W) on a grass-covered rise (H 0.45m) with some distinctive boulders on the perimeter, but there is no clear evidence of artificial construction. Description
Visible as a circular feature on aerial photographs (GSIAP: M 472-3), and situated on a low knoll in an area of limestone outcrop. Circular domed and scrub-covered area (diam. 38.2m NE-SW; 36.2m NW-SE) defined by a grass-covered stone spread (Wth 4-4.5m; max. H 0.8m) with no evidence of facing-stones or of an identifiable original entrance. A rectangular grass-covered enclosure or annexe (RO047-016003-) (dims 21.7m NW-SE; 12m NE-SW) defined by a stone spread is attached to the perimeter at NE. Description
Situated on an unreclaimed area of limestone outcrop. A grass and scrub-covered area of about 41 acres (c. 15 ha) contains a high density of rectangular plots and house remains associated with lazy-bed cultivation and dating probably to the 18th or 19th century, but some walls could relate to an earlier field system. Description
On an undulating landscape within the field system (RO047-019002-). Oval grass and scrub-covered area (int. dims 31m N-S; c. 25m E-W) defined by an earth and stone bank best preserved (Wth 5.3m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 0.4m) E-S, and a slight scarp elsewhere, but the perimeter cannot be traced N-NE. There is no visible fosse or identifiable original entrance. The interior is uneven, and there is a hut-site (RO047-019003-) (int. diam. 7m) defined by a slight bank (Wth c. 1m) on a rise inside the perimeter at NW. Cashel (RO047-019004-) is c. 200m to the SE. Description
In an undulating landscape. An area of about 90 acres (c. 35 ha) in rough grassland contains collapsed stone field walls creating large but irregularly-shaped subrectangular large fields of c. 1-2 ha, some of which are associated with lazy-bed cultivation. A roadway (RO047-019006-) (Wth c. 5m) defined by stone spreads weaves through the fields (L c. 165m) at the N end. The field system contains rath (RO044-087001-) and cashel (RO047-019001-), but probably post-dates these features as a field wall overlies the cashel. Description
On a gently undulating landscape with limestone outcrop. Subcircular slightly domed and scrub-covered area (int. dims 51m N-S; 43m E-W) defined by a stone spread (Wth 4-7m; H 0.3-0.8m) with facing-stones, best preserved at SSW where up to 3 courses survive (original Wth 2.2-2.45m). The entrance at ESE has 3 large stones on the N side of the passage, but the S side does not survive. A house-site (RO047-019005-) (int. dims 9.3m NNE-SSW; 5.2m) defined by grass-covered stone spreads (Wth 1-2m) with doorways on the long walls and an internal division is on a NE-SW ridge in the interior. The interior is overlain by a relict NE-SW field wall associated with the field system (RO047-019001-) and there are clearance cairns in the interior. Rath (RO044-087001-) is c. 200m to the NW.
