• RO047-009001 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Marked on the 1837 and 1915 eds of the OS 6-inch map and described as 'Cronin Fort' in gothic lettering on both. It is situated on a S-facing slope. Oval grass-covered platform (dims 51.7m N-S; 41.2m E-W) defined by a slight earth and stone bank most evident at W and N (Wth 2.5m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.5m), but the perimeter is usually reduced to a scarp (max. H 1.7m at S). There is no visible fosse or identifiable original entrance but some relict field walls (RO047-009002-) cross the interior. The perimeter is quarried at E and there are some clearance cairns in the interior. Rath (RO047-010001-) is about 50m to the SE. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010

• RO047-010001 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  On a gentle S-facing slope. D-shaped grass-covered area (dims 29.4m NW-SE; c. 17m NE-SW) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 3.4-3.5m; int. H 0.2-0.45m; ext. H 0.7-0.85m) with slight traces of a fosse (Wth of base 1.5m), which is circumscribed by a field wall SSE-SW. There is no identifiable original entrance and a NW-SE field wall truncates the perimeter NE of the centre and the monument does not survive visibly NE of this feature.   Description

  On a gentle SE-facing slope. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 33.5m ENE-WSW; 30.5m NNW-SSE) defined by a grass-covered earthen bank (Wth 4.5-7m; int. H 0.2-0.8m; ext. H 1-1.4m) with some bushes and an outer fosse (Wth of top 4.5m; Wth of base 1m; D 0.2-0.55m) best preserved SW-NNE. The entrance (Wth 1.8m) and causeway (Wth 4.2m) are at ESE. There is local knowledge of a short souterrain passage (RO047-014002-) in the disturbed SW quadrant of the interior. Rath (RO047-013----) is c. 150m to the W. • RO047-015001 Ringfort - cashel
  Description

  On the summit of a broad hill. Subcircular scrub-covered area (int. dims 30.5m NE-SW; 27m NW-SE) defined by a grass-covered stone spread (Wth 4.5-5m; int. H 0.45-0.65m; ext. H 0.7-1m) with no visible facing-stones. There is no identifiable original entrance, but three relict field walls are attached to the perimeter (max. L 27m) S-W.   Description

  Visible on aerial photographs (CUCAP: APH 36, 37) and situated on a slight SW-facing slope. Subcircular grass-covered area (dims 25.8m NE-SW; 21m NW-SE) defined by a grass-covered stone spread best preserved at NE (Wth 3.5m; H 0.3-0.5m). • RO047-015005 Field system
  Description

  On a gentle SE-facing slope. An area of about 48 acres (c. 20 ha) contains the grass-covered foundations of stone walls (Wth c. 1.5m) forming small, generally rectangular fields (dims c. 30m x c. 50m to c. 50m x c. 100m) associated with roadway RO047-015006-). The road may be contemporary with cashel (RO047-015002-) as it approaches its perimeter but does not overlie it. One curving wall traces most of the perimeter of an oval enclosure (dims c. 330m E-W; c. 180m N-S) with the cashel (RO047-015002-) on its perimeter at the SE, but much of this is now in reclaimed ground to the N. The cashels (RO047-015001-; RO047-015004-) are also within the field system. Two rectangular house sites (RO047-015007-; RO047-015008-) defined by stone wall footings are probably post-medieval and lazy-beds are associated with some of the fields. • RO047-020001 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  On a gentle S-facing slope. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 37m NNW-SSE; 36.3m ENE-WSW) with some bushes defined by an earthen bank best preserved SW-W-NE (at NNW: Wth of base 5.6m; Wth of top 1m; int. H 1m; ext. H 2m) where it is accompanied by an external flat-bottomed fosse (at NNW: Wth of top 7.3m; Wth of base 1.3m; D 1.2m) and faint traces of an outer bank. The defining bank is reduced to a low mound (at SSE: Wth 3m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.4m) with no evidence of a fosse NE-E-SW, and there is no identifiable original entrance. There is a small rectangular house platform (RO047-020002-) (dims c. 3m x 2m) inside the perimeter at SW. There are lazy-beds and clearance cairns in the interior.   Description

  On a gentle S-facing slope c. 30m S of rath (RO047-010001-). An underground passage was discovered in 1934 (Irish Times 3-1-34; Connaught Tribune 6-1-34) which is described locally as a passage (L c. 4m) leading through a creep to a beehive chamber.
