  Description

  Marked faintly only on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map as a D-shaped embanked enclosure (ext. dims c. 40m NE-SW; c. 35m NW-SE) truncated by a NE-SW boundary at NW, and situated on the crest of a broad NW-SE ridge. This is now an oval grass-covered mound (dims of base 16.2m NW-SE; 9.6m NE-SW; H 1.8-2.35m) with a NW-SE crest (L 7.1m) and some bushes, which may be spoil. • RO045-077001 Church
  Description

  This is the parish church of Rahara, listed as Rathfard in the ecclesiastical taxation of Elphin in 1306 (Cal. doc. Ire., vol. 5, 224). Situated on a gentle E-facing slope c. 1.2 km from the NW corner of Lough Funshinagh, a large subrectangular turlough (dims c. 3km NNW-SSE; c. 1-1.3km ENE-WSW). The church is a rectangular structure (ext. dims 16.3m E-W; 8.4m N-S) with good quoins, one with a carved head (RO045-077004-) at the NW angle. The N wall with a pointed doorway (Wth 1.3m; H 1.5m) towards the W end is complete (H c. 3.5m). The E wall with the dressed ingoings of the embrasure (Wth 1.6m) of a lancet window which is damaged, survives almost complete (H c. 3m), while the W wall is largely rebuilt and the S wall is missing. A sheela-na-gig (RO045-077005-) (Siggins 1990, 46-7) carved on a voussoir from an arch (H 0.44m; Wth 0.1-0.4; T 0.3m) is now in Roscommn County Museum (RO039-043025-). The church is within a rectangular graveyard (RO045-077002-) (dims c. 70m N-S; c. 50m E-W) defined by a field bank at E and masonry walls at N and W, but the graveyard has been extended at S (dims c. 65m NW-SE; c. 35-65m NE-SW). • RO045-079 Linear earthwork
  Description

  On a gentle NE-facing slope at the NW corner of Funshinagh Lough, a large turlough. Known locally as the Lurag, it ran ENE-WSW (L c. 450m) from the NW-SE public road c. 1km W of Funshinagh Lough towards the lake. A short section (L c. 50m) of a fosse (Wth of base 4.3m; Wth of top 9.2m; D 0.7-0.9m), known locally as part of the Lurag which was traditionally dug by an enraged beast (Kelly 1907, 5; Anon 1988a) survives just E of rath (RO045-080001--). If it continued SW of the public road (L c. 700m) it would enter the basin called the Red Bog. Sections of the Lurag (RO045-162----) beginning c. 500m S of the Red Bog continued it to the SW as far as Lough Croan (L c. 1.7km). Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010

  Description

  Towards the bottom of a gentle NE-facing slope overlooking the NW corner of Lough Funshinagh, a large turlough. Described as a circular area (diam. 27m E-W; 25m N-S) defined by an earthen bank and slight traces of an outer fosse, and with an entrance (Wth 2.5m) at E (Gannon 1972). It is not now visible at ground level in reclaimed pasture. Hut-site (RO045-080002-) is c. 30m to the SW, and a section of the Lurag (RO045-079----) survives just to the E.   Description

  Towards the bottom of a NE-facing slope overlooking the NW corner of Lough Funshinagh, a large turlough, and c. 30m SW of rath (RO045-080001-). Described in 1975 as a circular area (diam. 5.5m) defined by an earthen bank with an entrance (Wth 1m) at E (SMR file). It is not visible at ground level in reclaimed pasture.   Marked only on the 1915 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, and situated in a broad basin. This is a D-shaped grass-covered area (dims 32m NE-SW; c. 20m NW-SE) defined by an earthen bank (at S: Wth 5.2m; int. H 0.55m; ext. H 1.05m) and outer fosse (at S: Wth of top 4m; Wth of base 1.4m; D 0.2m) NE-E-SW but there is no evidence of the perimeter elsewhere.   Description

  A structure with a cross indicating a church is the only feature marked at Raharrowbeg on the Strafford map of c. 1636, but William McHugh Kelly owned over 600 acres at Ballagh and Raharrowbeg in 1641 (Simington 1949, 115, Athlone (215)). The castle is marked only on the 1915 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, and situated in a broad basin. This is a subrectangular grass-covered mound (dims of top 10.2m E-W; 3.4m N-S; dims of base 17m E-W; 8.4m N-S; H 0.65-1.25m) within rath (RO045-130001-).   Description

  A mill is marked on the Strafford map of c. 1636 in the townland of Coolnageer or Coolnegarry which included what is now Lysterfield townland (Simington 1949 (Athlone (233)), and it is depicted as an L-shaped building and still functioning although described as an 'old mill' on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. Situated in a low-lying marshy plain on the W bank of a NE-SW stream which was probably the mill-race and c. 300m from the W shore of Lough Funshinagh, a large turlough.
