  Description

  On the S-facing shoulder of a W-E spur. Described as a circular area (diam. 41.5m E-W; 40m N-S) defined by an earthen bank, outer fosse and outer bank. There was a stone-lined entrance (Wth 2.8m) and causeway at E (Gannon 1972). It is not visible now at ground level in pasture, although a field bank SE-W-NE might incorporate some of the outer bank.   Description

  Marked as a circular embanked enclosure (ext. diam. c. 50m) on the 1837 and 1915 eds of the OS 6-inch map, and situated on an E-facing slope of a W-E spur. An arc (C 42m) of an earthen bank (at ENE: Wth 3.5m; int. H 0.85m; ext. H 1.4m) survives NNE-S, with slight traces of an outer fosse and outer bank E-S.   Description

  Marked as a circular embanked enclosure (ext. diam. c. 35m) on the 1837 and 1915 eds of the OS 6-inch map, and situated on a rise overlooking the N end of Lough Funshinagh, a large turlough c. 500m to the SE. This is an oval grass-covered area (dims c. 35m NE-SW; c. 25m NW-SE) defined by portion of a grass-covered bank (Wth 3.1m; int. H 0.25m; ext. H 0.9m) SW-W-NE (C 34.5m) and the perimeter may be incorporated into a field bank NE-S-SW. There are quarries in the interior and outside the perimeter at NW.   Description

  On a low-lying, level landscape, c. 900m N of Lough Funshinagh, a large turlough. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 54.6m N-S; 52.7m E-W) defined by an earthen bank with bushes (at W: Wth 4.8m; int. H 0.6m; ext. H 1.1m) S-NW and NE-E (at E: Wth 3.9m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 1.4m) which is reduced to a scarp elsewhere. There is an outer fosse (Wth of top 4.6-5m; Wth of base 1m; D 0.8-0.9m) S-SE, and the entrance (Wth 3m) and causeway (Wth 5m) are at S.   Description

  Marked as a circular embanked enclosure (ext. diam. c. 60m) on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, and as an oval one (dims c. 80m N-S; c. 40m E-W) on the 1915 ed. Situated on a gentle ENE-facing slope. This is an oval grass-covered area (dims 70m NNE-SSW; 40m WNW-ESE) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 4m; int. H 0.1-0.75m; ext. H 0.9-1m) E-S-W, with a fosse (Wth of top 4.6m; Wth of base 1m; D 0.45m) at WNW and a slight scarp N-E. It is bisected by an E-W field wall and barely survives N of this.   Description

  On low-lying marshy ground c. 700m from the N shore of Lough Funshinagh, a large turlough. A castle at Raharowbeg is not marked on the Strafford map of c. 1636 although William Mc Hugh Kelly owned over 600 acres in Ballagh and Raharrowbeg in 1641 (Simington 1949, Athlone, (215), 115), and no references to a castle are known, although it is marked on the 1837 edition of the OS 6-inch map. The castle is a grass-covered rubble mound (dims 22m NNW-SSE; 18m ENE-WSW; max. H 2.1m) at the NW perimeter of a D-shaped grass-covered enclosure (RO045-084002-) (dims 64m NE-SW; c. 50m NE-SW) defined by a fosse (at NE: Wth of top 4m; Wth of base 1-1.2m; int. D 0.95m; ext. D 0.4m) NW-ESE and a NW-SE drain at SW, but the perimeter at ESE-S cannot be identified. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010

  On low-lying marshy ground, c. 700m from the N shore of Lough Funshinagh, a large turlough. The castle (RO045-084001-) is at the NW perimeter of a D-shaped grass-covered area (dims 64m NE-SW; c. 50m NE-SW) defined by a fosse (at NE: Wth of top 4m; Wth of base 1m-1.2m; int. D 0.95m; ext.   Towards the bottom of a SE-facing slope. Subcircular area (dims. 27m NE-SW; 24m NW-SE) defined by an earthen bank (at SE: Wth 5m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 1.4m) ENE-S and a slight scarp or a low broad rise elsewhere. There is no visible fosse or identifiable original entrance.   At a place called Abbots Hill on a NE-facing slope overlooking a NW-SE valley. Circular grass and furze-covered area (int. diam. 8.8m NW-SE) defined by a grass-covered earthen bank (Wth 2.8-3m; int. H 0.25-0.65m; ext. H 0.5-0.95m) with an entrance (Wth 1.7m) at WSW.
