- RO014-007 Ringfort - rath
Description
On the S bank of a W-E section of the River Lung. D-shaped grass-covered area (dims 52.9m E-W; 38m N-S) defined by an earthen bank with some bushes (Wth 3-3.8m; int. H 0.2-0.4m; ext. H 0.7-1.3m) separated by a fosse (Wth of top 6.2-6.5m; Wth of base 3.2-5m; D 0.5-0.9m) from an outer bank (Wth 1.2m at S to 3.2-3.5m generally; ext. H 0.5-0.7m) and outer fosse (Wth of top 2-3.9m; Wth of base 1.1-2.3m; D 0.2-0.3m). All features survive NE-S-NW and all are truncated at N by the W-E River Lung. Description
Marked as a castle on a Longfield estate map of 1811 in the NLI (ms. 21. F. 44. (41)), and situated on the E bank of the W-E River Lung at a point where it turns N. Description
Marked only on the 1914 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, and situated on a N-facing slope of a low spur or ridge. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 47m NNW-SSE) defined by an overgrown earthen bank (at SSE: Wth 3.7m; int. H 0.1m; ext. H 0.6m) separated by a fosse (at SSE: Wth of top 6.8m; Wth of base 4.3m; ext. D 1.5m) from an overgrown outer bank (at SSE: Wth of base 6.9m; Wth of top 4.1m; ext. H 1.4m) which is incorporated into a field bank, and an outer fosse (Wth of top 6.2m Wth of base 3m; D 0.2m). All features survive SE-SW, and the inner bank is continued by a low scarp (H 1.1m at NNW) SW-NNE. There is no visible entrance, but there are swallow holes on the perimeter at N and E. Description
On the N-facing slope of an E-W ridge. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 44m N-S; 43m E-W) whose southern third is overgrown together with the adjacent defining features. It is defined by an earthen bank (Wth 4-5.8m; int. H 0.1-0.6m; ext. H 1-1.6m) separated by a fosse (Wth of top 7.3-7.7m; Wth of base 4.3-5.5m; ext. D 0.9-1.8m) from a second earthen bank (Wth 4.1-5.4m; ext. H 0.8-1m). There is an outer fosse (Wth of top 3.7-6.6m; Wth of base 2.1-3.2m; ext. D 0.8-1.1m) and a third outer bank (Wth 4.3m; ext. H 0.8-1.2m) NE-S-SW, but there is no visible entrance (max. surviving diam. 79m N-S; 77m E-W). Rath (RO013-012----) is c. 220m to the E along the ridge. Description
On the N-facing slope of an E-W ridge. Oval grass-covered area (dims 45.4m NE-W; 34.4m NW-SE) defined by an overgrown earthen bank (Wth 4.1-4.9m; int. H 0.1-0.6m; ext. H 0.1-1.6m) which is best preserved (Wth 7m; int. H 1.2m; ext. H 2.1m) S-W, and an outer fosse (Wth of base 3.6m; D 0.5-0.8m) S-W-NNE. There are modernised entrances at W (Wth 2m) and E (Wth 2m). Description
On the crest at the W end of an E-W spur. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 33.4m NW-SE; 33.4m NE-SW) defined by the slight remains of an earthen bank (Wth 2.3-3m; int. H 0.1-0.5m; ext. H 0.5-0.7m) separated by a fosse (Wth of base 2.8-3.7m; D 0.2-0.3m) SSW-NW and at NE from an outer bank (Wth 3.5-3.9m; ext. H 0.4-0.6m) which only survives SSW-NW and at NE (max. ext. diam. 52m NE-SW). There is no visible entrance, and the interior at W and the inner bank NW-NE have been quarried (D c. 0.3m). Rath (RO013-010----) is c. 350m to the WNW and rath (RO013-015----) is c. 250m to the ESE along the same spur. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010
