- SL011-080 Ringfort - rath
Description
Situated on a slight SE-facing slope in pasture. The SW one-third of the site now lies under a modern NW-SE orientated public roadway. Raised roughly D-shaped area (20 NW-SE; 15m NE-SW) enclosed by a bank of earth (Wth 5.6m; int. H 0.4m). No fosse is visible at ground level. The original bank encloses the site NW-SSE. A small roughly circular quarry (diam 4m; D 0.4m) has removed the bank at SSE-S. From S-NW the present edge of the site is defined by a modern bank of earth and stone (Wth 4m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 1.5m) derived from the construction of the roadway. The original entrance to the site is not recognisable. Compiled by: Mark Keegan Date of upload: 19 January 2011
- SL011-136 Ringfort - rath
Description
In rough, wettish pasture, located on a low NW–SE ridge. Raised circular area (22.6m N–S; 19.4m E–W) defined S–NW by remnants of an earthen bank (Wth 2.4m; int. H 0.1m; ext. H 0.7m, at W) and elsewhere by a slight scarp. The bank/scarp coincides with a natural break of slope at NW–NE. Outside the bank at S–W there is a shallow fosse (Wth 2-2.5m, at W) with an external bank (Wth 2.9m; int. H 0.8m; ext. H 0.4m, at W), truncated at W by a later field fence on a NW–SE axis. There is a hut site (SL011-136001-) on the E edge of the level interior. Immediately to S of the rath there is a subrectangular enclosure (SL011-136002-). Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 22 April 2013
- SL011-136001 Hut site
Description
In a rath (SL011-136----). Circular area (diam. 5.5m) defined by a low bank (Wth 1.4m; H 0.3m). Stones protrude from the sod cover on the bank. On the E side the enclosing bank of the hut site coincides with the enclosing scarp of the rath, with a drop in height of 0.85m. There is a narrow entrance gap in the bank at N which opens onto the rath scarp. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 22 April 2013
- SL011-136002 Enclosure
Description
In rough, wettish pasture, located on a low NW–SE ridge, immediately to S of a rath (SL011-136----) and hut site (SL011-136001-). A subrectangular area (21m NW–SE; 18.4m NE–SW) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 2m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.6m, at SE) but open on the NW side. The enclosure has a rather irregular shape. The bank at the N corner, which lies 2m S of the rath, is expanded to a width of c. 5m. The bank on the SE side describes a somewhat meandering line, bowing outwards in a gentle curve. The E corner appears rounded rather than angular. The bank is gapped and poorly preserved on the SE side and also on the SW side, where it may have been incorporated into a field fence on a NW–SE axis. The function of this enclosure, and its relationship to the rath, is unclear. It may be the remnant of a small field plot. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 22 April 2013
