• SL005-047 Ringfort - cashel
  Description

  Situated on summit of narrow E-W orientated ridge on slight N-facing slope. Raised circular area (diam. 23m) enclosed by the footings of a drystone wall (Wth 3.15m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.8). There is no fosse visible at ground level. The original external wall facing survives at the base of the footings NW-SSW consisting of large roughly rectangular blocks of limestone (av. dims. L 0.8m; Wth 0.6m; T 0.4m). The site is crossed on the W side by a NNW-SSE orientated drystone field wall that crosses the cashel wall at NW and at SSW. A break (Wth 2m) in the wall footings at ENE marks the position of the original entrance. • SL005-050 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a slight S-facing slope in gently undulating pasture. Raised circular area (diam. c.32m) enclosed by an earthen scarp (ext. H 0.7m). No fosse visible. The scarped edge encloses the site NW-SW. The site is defined by a steep scarp (ext H 2-3m) overlooking a public roadway that skirts the site SW-NW. Benbulbin School abuts the external base of the scarped edge at E. An E-W orientated drystone bisects the site. Original entrance not recognisable. Compiled by: Patrick F. • SL005-051 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated in gently undulating pasture on level ground. Raised circular area (diam. 26m) defined by an earth and stone bank (Wth 4.3m; int. H 0.4m). No fosse visible. The bank is best preserved SE-NE. From SW-NW the external base of the bank is roughly revetted with rubble stone. The interior of the site is crossed by two straight drystone field walls; the first is orientated NNW-SSE and crosses the bank at NE and at SE and the second wall links at a right angle to the first at SE and extends across the interior to cross the bank at SW. • SL005-173 Kiln - lime
  Description

  Situated in level pasture immediately to S of lane leading to a now ruined farmhouse located 60m to the NW. A cashel (SL005-047----) is located 100m to the SSE. D-shaped structure (max. ext. dims. 4.45m N-S; 5.05m E-W), with the straight vertical side (Wth 2.85; H 1.3m) facing N, constructed of roughly quarried limestone blocks bonded with a gravel limestone mortar. The bowl is infilled (int. dims 1.55m N-S; 1.55m E-W) with rubble stone and earth and the edges, with the exception of the straight side, are covered by a scarp of earth and rubble limestone. The stoking hole (H 0.1m; Wth 0.2m) is located at the central base of the N side at the rear of a rectangular lintelled recess (Wth 0.65m; H 0.43m). Compiled by: Patrick F.   Description

  Detached single-storey with attic limestone school master's house, built c. 1870, now derelict. Half-hipped slate roof, clay ridge and hip tiles, chimney missing from north end of ridge, gabled dormer, projecting eaves on exposed rafter ends, painted timber fascias, painted timber projecting bargeboards. Squared rubble walling, tooled ashlar quoins. Square-headed window openings, red brick surrounds, stone sills, windows boarded-up. Segmental-headed entrance door opening, square-headed rear door opening, red brick surrounds, painted timber vertically-sheeted doors. Set back from road edge, overgrown garden, former school building to east.
