- SL021-090 Ringfort - rath
Description
On a low spine of elevated dry ground extending from the W end of a high E-W ridge through poorly drained rushy pasture. A circular platform (27.5m N-S; 27m E-W) defined by an earthen bank, an intervening fosse and an outer bank, with an external fosse evident SW-NW. The banks appear as low grass-covered rises protruding from a sea of rushes engulfing the interior of the rath and the fosse. The inner bank (Wth 4m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 1.65m) has a low flattened internal lip but a pronounced external scarp. The intervening fosse (Wth 3m) is visible as a slight depression of soft wet ground. The outer bank (Wth 4.5m; int. 0.3m; ext. H 0.35m) survives SW-SE as a broad flattened grass-covered rise. The entrance (Wth 1.8m) is at ENE with a corresponding low area in the outer bank but no obvious causeway over the fosse. Stones protrude randomly from the terminal of the inner bank on the S side of the entrance. A remnant of a N-S field boundary crosses the outer bank at E. The interior is mostly level but with a slight slope down to ESE in the E half towards the entrance. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). Description
On a ridge, on a N-facing slope. A slightly raised circular area (diam. 29m) enclosed by an eroded earthen bank (Wth 3.4m; int. H 0.1m; ext. H 0.8m) with traces of an external fosse (Wth 3m; D 0.2m) along the W arc. A possible entrance is at E with numerous large stones in its vicinity. A N-S field boundary and drain curve around the E edge of the rath and a disused E-W trackway truncates the S edge. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). A quarry hole (8.6m N-S) has been dug into the fosse and scarp at E. Another rath (SL027-013----) lies c. 80m to SE. - SL021-096 Cursing stone
Description
In pasture, on a ridge. A set of cursing stones, according to Wood-Martin (1892, 363) similar to the 'Sumaghan stones' (SL027-029001-) at Ballysumaghan, formerly existed here. They, like the 'Sumaghan stones' were the 'special heritage of the Summaghan family' (ibid.) There are now no visible remains of these stones. They were possibly associated with a rath (SL021-097001-) which is a short distance to S. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). In rough pasture, on top of a ridge. A raised circular area (diam. 23.3m) enclosed by an earthen bank (Wth 2.5m; int. H 0.6m; ext. H 2.4m) with an external fosse (Wth 3m). Remains of an outer bank (Wth 2.5m; int. H 1.1) are evident SW-WNW. The inner bank is stone faced internally. A possible entrance (Wth 2.2m) is at SE. Depressions of a possible souterrain (SL021-097002-) occur in the NE and SW quadrants of the interior. The perimeter is overgrown with scrub. Field boundaries extend from the rath to NE, SE and SW. A set of cursing stones (SL021-096----) are possibly associated with this rath. Description
In pasture, on a gentle NW-facing slope. A circular area (40m NW-SE; 41m NE-SW) enclosed by an earthen bank (Wth 1.5m; int. H 0.75m, ext. H 0.9m) NNE-SE and by a scarp (H 1.55m) elsewhere. The bank is relatively narrow and insubstantial and resembles a field boundary. The scarp has a slight internal lip and is topped NW-N by a concentration of stones (Wth 1.4m). The interior is split-level with the change in level marked by a low NW-facing scarp (max. H 0.6m) bisecting the interior slightly NW of the centre. The scarp retains dilapidated stone facing in parts. To SE of the scarp the interior is level, grassy and clear of overgrowth. The area to NW of the dividing scarp slopes down to NW and is strewn with moss-covered stone and dotted with clumps of bushes and brambles. There is a possible souterrain (SL021-099003-) in the N half of the interior and a holy well (SL021-099002-) in the NW quadrant. Description
In a rath (SL021-099001-), c. 2m NW of a NW-facing scarp which bisects the interior of the rath off-centre to NW. A slightly sunken semicircular feature (3m NE-SW; 2m NW-SE) bordered NE-E by an irregular moss-covered cairn (Wth 4m; H 0.5) and defined SE-S by a low inward scarp. Immediately to SW, protruding at the roots of a mature ash tree, are two large slabs, one resting on top of the other. There is no evidence of recent veneration at this well. A possible souterrain (SL021-099003-) is adjacent to the well. Description
In pasture, on a narrow ridge top with a steep fall of ground to N and S. Indicated on the 1838 OS 6-inch map as an embanked circular area (diam. c. 25m). A slightly raised level circular area (c. 30m N-S; 33.7m E-W) defined ESE-NW by a low broadly slumped scarp (H 0.7m) best preserved SW-W. The scarp is incorporated NNW-NNE into a property fence on roughly E-W axis. A N-S field drain, with a field boundary on its E side, truncates the scarp NE-E. A possible external fosse is indicated SW-NW by a slight depression or band (Wth c. 3m) of soft damp ground. A barely discernible linear depression, on NNW-SSE axis, which extends across the W half of the level interior is possibly a furrow. - SL027-180 Enclosure
Description
In rough damp pasture, occupying a low rise surrounded on all sides by high ground, mostly rounded hillocks/drumlins and low ridges. There is a stream 100m to W. Views are of the rising slopes of the surrounding hillocks, with a somewhat more open aspect to W along a small valley. A N−S field boundary lies 10m to E of the enclosure, and to E of that there is a farm shed and bay for storing silage bales. This enclosure was partly levelled at an unknown date in the past. It is not indicated on any edition of the OS 6-inch maps; it is visible in aerial imagery. It is evident at ground level as a slightly raised circular area (26m N−S; 27m E−W) defined by a low, but clearly visible scarp (ext. H 0.3-0.4m), best defined at SE, SW and NW. The scarp is barely discernible at E (Wth 3m) and a portion has been levelled at SE−S (Wth 4m). A low undulation is visible c. 2m outside the enclosing scarp on the N side; this may be an outer bank, however, it is not fully concentric with the enclosure and cannot be traced around the full circuit; it may be the remnant of a later field division which skirted the enclosure. The interior has a very slightly domed profile, more pronounced on the N−S axis. Notified to NMS by Jean-Charles Caillère.
