- KK008-095001 Enclosure
Description
On a W-facing slope, in pasture. Indicated on the 1st (1839) ed. OS 6-inch map as a large oval enclosure (dims. c. 97m NW-SE; c. 75m NE-SW). On field inspection in 1987 traces of this large enclosure (max. dims. c. 92m NW-SE; c. 66m NE-SW) were visible, defined by a low, very wide bank. It has a saucer-shaped interior dipping to the centre. The monument was also identified by on an aerial photograph (GB91.EU.13, 20 August 1991) as an inner (diam. c. 50m) and outer enclosure (diam. c. 100m), the fosses of both being clearly visible as cropmarks. Two field boundaries appear to be running from the N-NE quadrant of the enclosure and a possible roadway (KK008-095002-) runs northwestward from the NNW sector for c. 150m. Description
On a W-facing slope, in pasture. Listed in the SMR (1987) as 'Road (s)' and in the RMP (1996) as 'Earthwork site'. Identified on an aerial photograph (GSI roll 43, print 26) as a linear feature running NW-SE from the NNW sector of a large enclosure (KK008-095001-). On field inspection in 1987 this feature was not visible at ground level. The feature (Wth c. 18m) was also identified as a cropmark on another aerial photograph (GB91.EU.13, 20 August 1991) consisting of two parallel ditches running for c. 150m. Two field boundaries appear to be running from the N-NE quadrant of the enclosure, probably the remains of a relict field system. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 16 January 2018
- KK008-096 Enclosure
Description
In very low lying marshy terrain at the break between the flood plain and slightly higher ground to the E, in rolling grassland. There are good views in all directions. Depicted on the 1st (1839) ed. OS 6-inch map and 1900 revision as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 40m) with trees growing in the interior. Two field boundaries are depicted, one running roughly N-S along the outer edge of the W quadrant and the other running ESE-WNW from the SW quadrant. On field inspection in 1987 the W quadrant of the bank has been destroyed by the planting of a line of beech trees, now very mature, and by drainage channels. The remaining enclosure (dims. 30m N-S) is defined by a stoney bank (Wth 2m; int. H 0.6m; ext. H 0.7m) and external fosse (Wth 2m; D 0.5-0.6m). The interior and S side of the monument were very wet and boggy when visited. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 16 January 2018
