- KK025-002001 Church
Description
Midway down a N-facing slope with good views from NW-W-SW. Centrally placed within a rectangular graveyard (KK025-002002-) is a heavily ivy-clad rectangular church (int. dims. 16m E-W x 7m N-S), orientated roughly E-W, constructed of roughly coursed limestone and granite. All the walls (T c. 1.2m) are upstanding (E gable H 1.2m) with the exception of the N wall which survives only to its foundations in places. The church was entered through a round-headed doorway of roughly cut granite at the W end of the S wall. The visible windows include a flat-headed single-light window at the E end of the S wall and a chamfered limestone two-light window at attic level in the W gable. At the E end of the S wall there is an unusual semi-circular bowl-shaped granite piscina (dims. 0.3m x 0.2m; H 0.2m) which projects out of the wall. The upper surface of the piscina is concave with fluting which runs into a circular drainage channel in the wall. There is an aumbry (dims. 0.5m x 0.4m; D 0.3m) with granite surrounds W of the piscina. Within the nave area of the church there is a font (KK025-002003-) and a free-standing octagonal limestone stoup (H 0.5m; max. Wth 0.4m tapering to 0.25m; T of rim 0.5m; circular bowl diam. 0.17m; D 0.13m), which tapers towards the top and bottom. The middle, or widest point, of the stoup is decorated in false relief with a band of crudely executed interlace. - KK025-002002 Graveyard
Description
Midway down a N-facing slope with good views from NW-W-SW. A rectangular graveyard (int. dims. 33m N-S x 30m E-W) enclosed by a stone wall. All the memorials date to the 18th century or later. Centrally placed within the graveyard is an ivy-clad rectangular medieval church (KK025-002001-). Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 23 February 2022
- KK025-002003 Font
Description
Within the nave area of the ruined medieval church of Grangesylvia (KK025-002001-) there is a crude rectangular granite font (max. dims. 0.9m x 0.8m; H 0.37m) with rounded corners. The rectangular bowl (int. dims. 0.56m x 0.46m; D 0.15m; rim T 0.18m) contains a square drain-hole (0.08m x 0.08m) at its centre. See attached photographs: KK025-002003-_01 Font with stoup resting within it Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 23 February 2022
- KK025-004 Enclosure
Description
Indicated as a small semi-circular quarry (dims. c. 33m NW-SE; c. 12m NE-SW) on the 1st (1839) ed. OS 6-inch map and as a semi-circular enclosure of similar dimensions on the 1900 revision. This may be a quarry which was later misinterpreted by cartographers as an enclosure, or it may be an enclosure and the 1st ed. map may be erroneous. A third possibility is that it is an enclosure which was subsequently quarried. The OS maps give no indication of the continuation of the enclosure on the E side of a townland boundary which runs NW-SE along the E/straight side of the semi-circular feature. This area E of the townland boundary is indicated on both editions of the OS maps as a small tree plantation, which is still visible on satellite imagery (Google Earth imagery date 24 April 2021). Satellite imagery (Google Earth imagery date 14 July 2018) shows the feature as a dark semi-circular cropmark, which suggests that this is a filled in quarry. - KK025-018 Fulacht fia
Description
On the N bank of a stream, in pasture. Listed by Prendergast (1955, 10) as a fulacht fia. Satellite imagery (Digitalglobe 2011-2013 and OS Orth Aerial Premium 2013-2018) indicates that the land has subsequently been reclaimed.
