A straight-sided enclosure identified as a cropmark of a fosse on an aerial photograph (CUCAP BDI007, 14 July 1970). Only the S portion of the enclosure (dims. c. 40m) is visible, the S side aligned NW-SE and the S length of the E and W sides. Description
Indicated on the Down Survey (1655-6) barony map of Gowran in ‘Lavistown’ ((Hibernia Regnum, courtesy of Trinity College Dublin) and on the Down Survey parish map of Blackrath and St Martins (NLI MS720). The terrier accompanying the parish map describes, ‘on Lavistowne a Castle in repaire’ and lists ‘Thomas Denn’ as the proprietor in 1640 (ibid.). According to Carrigan (1905, vol. 3, 367), ‘A small fragment of Lavistown castle still remains, being incorporated with the walls of one of Mr. Edward Langton’s out-offices’. Description
Detached three-bay two-storey house, built 1810, on a symmetrical plan with single-bay single-storey gabled projecting glazed porch to centre ground floor, single-bay two-storey lower recessed flanking bays terminating in single-bay two-storey gabled advanced end bays, and single-bay single-storey return to east. Hipped slate roof (pitched to flanking bays; gabled to end bays; pitched to return) with clay ridge tiles, rendered chimney stacks having stringcourses, rooflights, and cast-iron rainwater goods on rendered eaves. Pitched (gabled) glazed roof to porch in timber frame with finial to apex, and cast-iron rainwater goods on timber eaves. Unpainted roughcast walls over random rubble limestone construction (exposed random rubble limestone construction to return). Square-headed window openings (in tripartite arrangement to ground floor) with cut-limestone sills, six-over-six timber sash windows to ground floor (having two-over-two sidelights to tripartite openings), eight-over-eight timber sash windows to first floor (all having louvered timber panelled false external shutters), and two-over-two timber sash windows to first floor end bays. Square-headed openings to porch with timber panelled pilaster mullions, glazed timber panelled door on cut-limestone threshold, fixed-pane timber windows on rendered sill, and fixed-pane overlight to gable. Segmental-headed door opening to house with carved cut-limestone doorcase, timber panelled door having sidelights, and decorative fanlight. Interior with timber panelled shutters to window openings. Set back from road in own grounds with landscaped grounds to site.

Description
Farmyard complex, established 1810, including:(i) Attached three-bay two-storey outbuilding. Hipped slate roof with clay ridge tiles, and cast-iron rainwater goods. Ivy-clad random rubble limestone walls with dressed limestone quoins to corners. Square-headed window openings with carved cut-limestone shallow sills forming sill course, lintels, and timber casement windows. Square-headed door openings with lintels, and glazed tongue-and-groove timber panelled doors having overlights. Set back from road in grounds shared with Lavistown House (Riverview House).(ii) Attached five-bay single-storey outbuilding with attic with pair of square-headed carriageways to left. Extensively renovated to accommodate use as offices. Pitched slate roof with section of replacement artificial slate, clay ridge tiles, rooflights, and cast-iron rainwater goods on rendered eaves. Random rubble limestone walls with section of ivy-clad unpainted render over. Square-headed window openings with shallow sills, and replacement timber casement windows. Pair of square-headed carriageways to left with replacement tongue-and-groove timber panelled double doors, and one with glazed tongue-and-groove timber panelled door having sidelight on tongue-and-groove timber panelled riser.(iii) Detached three-bay double-height outbuilding. Reroofed. Pitched roof with replacement corrugated-iron over timber construction having iron ridges, and iron rainwater goods on timber eaves. Random rubble limestone walls with dressed limestone quoins to corners, and painted corrugated-iron to gables. Square-headed (full-height) openings forming open front with cast-iron banded pillars, and no fittings.

Gateway, built 1810, comprising pair of rusticated limestone ashlar piers with stringcourses, and carved cut-limestone cornice capping. Road fronted at entrance to grounds of Lavistown House (Riverview House).
