- MA121-090 Cairn - unclassified
Description
In undulating pastureland. This cairn is a National Monument (no. 251) in state care. Oval-shaped mound of stone (H 10m; diam. 51m at base), delimited by four flat kerbstones E to SW, enclosed by a heavily overgrown earthen bank (H 0.9m). Decorated stone ball recovered from the site in the late 1800s (NMI). Material from the cairn was probably used to construct the Ordnance Survey trigonometrical station on its summit. Wilde (1872, 222) mentions a large inaccessible cave beneath the stones. The above description has been derived from D. Lavelle (compiler), An Archaeological Survey of Ballinrobe and District including Lough Mask and Lough Carra. Lough Mask and Lough Carra Tourist Development Association (1994), No. 26. Date of upload: 7 January 2015
- MA121-091001 Ringfort - unclassified
Description
In pasture, on gentle S-facing slope. Circular area (42m N-S; 42m E-W), enclosed by bank of earth and stone (H 1.1m), containing clearance material. Gap on SSW with parallel walls (L 15m) of dry-stone masonry running N toward interior, ending in subrectangular area (MA121-091002-). Interior heavily overgrown, also contains clearance and stone fence. The above description has been derived from D. Lavelle (compiler), An Archaeological Survey of Ballinrobe and District including Lough Mask and Lough Carra. Lough Mask and Lough Carra Tourist Development Association (1994), No. 101. Date of upload: 7 January 2015
- MA121-091002 Structure
Description
In SW quadrant of a ringfort (MA121-091001-). This structure was recorded in 1978 as follows: 'There is gap in the bank [of the ringfort] on the SSW side. This leads into a small stone structure of sub-rectangular plan, now outlined by a wall footing. This feature and the entrance appear to be of more recent origin -possibly the remains of a lime kiln or a corn-drying kiln.' (SMR file, 1978). It was recorded by Lavelle (1994, 22, no. 101) as: ‘Gap on SSW with parallel walls (L 15m) of dry-stone masonry running N toward interior, ending in subrectangular area’. - MA121-137001 Church
Description
Church in E end of rectangular stone enclosure (23m N-S; 50m E-W). Poorly preserved ruins of rectangular church (6.3m N-S; 5.6m E-W); E wall survives to max. H 1.8 m; short returns of N and S walls, otherwise walls collapsed. Contained round arched E window, now missing (Wilde 1872, 155). The above description has been derived from D. Lavelle (compiler), An Archaeological Survey of Ballinrobe and District including Lough Mask and Lough Carra. Lough Mask and Lough Carra Tourist Development Association (1994), No. 603. Date of upload: 13 January 2015
- MA121-137002 Sheela-na-gig
Description
Listed in the RMP (1997) as 'stone sculpture (original location)’, this record refers to a sheela-na-gig which was originally located in Killursagh church (MA121-137001-). In 1867 Wilde recorded it as a stone figure carved in relief, which was removed from Killursagh church and built into a coach house nearby (O Lochlainn 1968, 157). In 2012 new information came to light confirming that the carving consists of a sheela-na-gig, and that its present location (MA121-178----) is in the porch of the modern Roman Catholic church in Cross village.
