• MA081-011 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, located on a low NW–SE ridge, with good views. Raised circular area (42m E–W; 41m N–S) defined by a substantial earthen bank, outside which is a fosse with external stone bank/fence. The inner bank (Wth 9m; int. H 1.3m; ext. H 3m at SW, 1.7m at E) has a broad internal slump on the E half of the rath, with a stepped appearance at E–S; it has a pronounced external scarp, especially at S−SW. The fosse (Wth 3.5-4m; ext. D 1.2m) is well defined on the W half, but is barely discernible at N–NE and cannot be traced at E−S. On the external edge of the fosse at S–N there is a stone bank (Wth 2.6m; int. H 1.2m; ext. H 0.7m) which serves as a field fence but may incorporate remnants of a primary enclosing bank. There is a break (Wth 4.3m) in the inner bank at S with a corresponding causeway-like feature (Wth c. 3m) over the fosse, but no corresponding break in the outer bank/fence. A gorse-covered property fence and field drain, on a NE–SW axis, cross the rath slightly to NW of centre. The interior appears slightly elevated in the centre, and is dotted with several small sod-covered heaps of stone. At W, there is a depression (Wth 2-2.7m; D 0.45m), somewhat irregular in plan, which extends from the inner face of the bank, for 6m to E. It is deepest at W, becoming shallower towards E end. The base of the depression is irregular in depth with some stones protruding slightly from beneath the sod. The interior is grassy; hawthorn and brambles ring the perimeter. • MA081-044 Enclosure
  Description

  In pasture, on a ridge with a fall of ground to N–NE. Ground also falls towards Lough Caldragh which is c. 100m to S. Not indicated on any edition of the OS 6-inch maps. An ephemeral oval undulation (c. 16m N–S; c. 26m E–W) can be traced at ground level, possibly a levelled enclosure. The ground surface is uneven, and the remains are very indistinct.   Description

  In pasture on a NNE-facing slope. Listed in the SMR (1991) and RMP (1997) as ‘earthwork’. The original source of information is unknown. Inspected in 1996, there was no visible trace of archaeological remains at ground level. The nature of this possible earthwork is very uncertain. • MA082-003001 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, located on top of a ridge with a fall of ground to S into a narrow stream valley. There are good views, particularly extensive to N and E. Raised circular area (30m N–S; 30m E–W) defined by an earthen bank, and enclosed by a fosse with an external bank. The inner bank (Wth 3m; int. H 0.35m; ext. H 1.1m at N, 1.7m at S) has a pronounced external slope and retains a low but well defined internal lip, stony in parts. The fosse (Wth 3-3.5m) is evident as a shallow depression at W–N, petering out at E–SE; at S–SW it survives as a terrace (Wth 3m) with a scarp (H 1.1m) on its outer edge which merges with the steep slope dropping to the stream valley. The external bank is evident at WSW–N as an earth and stone bank (Wth c. 2.5m; int. H 0.65m; ext. H 0.8m, at N) modified to serve as a field fence; it is reduced to a low rise at NE–ENE and does not survive at SE–SW. The entrance is likely to have been at E where there is a gap (Wth 4m) in the inner bank at E, with corresponding breaks in the fosse and external bank. A protrusion outwards of the S terminal of the entrance gap suggests relatively recent modification. There is also a break in the bank at SW; at its outer edge the break (Wth 0.4m) is narrow, and lined on the SE side with a stone, but it expands to a broader area (Wth 2m) on the inner face to the bank. The interior has a very slight slope to S. There is a small, shallow hollow (max dim. 2m) in the centre. According to local information, there may be a souterrain (MA082-003001-) in the rath. A shallow hollow (max dim. 2m) in the centre of the rath, but there no structural features are evident to confirm the presence of a souterrrain. • MA082-049 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, in the SE corner of a modern field, located in lowlying wet ground, overlooked by higher ground to SW, and by a low rise to NW. Views fair to N, restricted by rising ground elsewhere. Roughly circular, slightly raised area (26m NE–SW; 24m NW–SE) defined in a broad arc SW–NE by a levelled bank. The bank is reduced to a low rise (Wth 7-8m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.55m) with a broad external slump and a low internal lip, giving the enclosure a somewhat saucer-shaped profile. The E edge of the enclosure is truncated by a straight NNE−SSW field fence, bordered on its W side by a field ditch, and on its E side by a trackway. • Saint Patrick's National School, school, 1905–1910 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached seven-bay single-storey national school, dated 1909, extant 1911, on a T-shaped plan with single-bay single-storey lean-to projecting bays centred on single-bay full-height gabled projecting porch. Closed, 1972. For sale, 2010. Now disused. Pitched slate roof on a T-shaped plan extending into lean-to slate roofs centred on pitched (gabled) slate roof with clay ridge tiles, lichen-covered concrete coping to gables on corbel kneelers with rendered chimney stacks to apexes centred on rendered chimney stack having chamfered capping supporting terracotta or yellow terracotta pots, and cast-iron rainwater goods on exposed timber rafters retaining cast-iron downpipes. Part creeper- or ivy-covered rendered, ruled and lined walls on rendered plinth centred on rusticated date stone ("1909"). Square-headed window openings centred on paired square-headed window openings with concrete sills, and concealed dressings framing timber casement windows. Square-headed opposing door openings with concealed dressings framing timber boarded or tongue-and-groove timber panelled doors. Set in unkempt grounds with tooled limestone ashlar piers to perimeter having chamfered capping supporting flat iron gate.
