  Description

  Located on the narrow top of an ENE−WSW ridge, at its ENE end where there are very good views over the surrounding landscape. There is a steep fall of ground to S into a valley of flat, wettish pasture bordered to S by another ridge on which another rath (MA080-031----) is located. At N ground falls away to an area of undulating terrain. There is a farmyard 30m to E. This rath is indicated on the 1838 OS 6-inch map as a circular embanked enclosure (diam. c. 30m); it is not shown on later map editions. The rath has been levelled, but the faint outline of a slightly raised circular area (diam. 29.5m) defined by a low undulation/levelled scarp can still be discerned. The remains are boxed into a small rectangular field of the modern era: the rath is located at the W end of this field and spans its full N−S width so that straight field walls overlie or truncate the rath perimeter at S, W and N, but the levelled scarp be can be traced as a curving undulation at NNE−SE. At SE a few large stones protrude from the scarp; these may be remnants of a stone facing or kerb. The interior of the rath is level and featureless. A boulder set in the levelled scarp at SSE overhangs a cavity, possibly indicating a souterrain (MA080-010001-). Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 25 November 2021

  Description

• MA080-014001 Ritual site - holy well
  Description

  Located in a thicket of blackthorn in rough wet pasture, bordered to SW by a field drain. This holy well is named ‘Tober Kevna’ on the 1838 and 1919 OS 6-inch maps. A drystone wall (Wth 0.5m; H 0.8m) encloses a roughly circular space (2.5m NE–SW; 2.8m NW–SE), which is roughly paved with flat stone slabs. In the centre of the paving is a roughly square hole (max. dim. 0.5m; D 0.4m) which must have been source of the spring, but was dry at the time of visit. A gap (Wth 0.8m) in the enclosing wall at SW allows access to the well. Immediately adjacent at SE, and partly obscured by overgrowth, are two roughly-built cairns/penitential stations. The most southerly (MA080-014004-) is circular in plan with a pillar-like appearance (diam. 0.8m; H 1.1m). Immediately to N of this, the second cairn (MA080-014003) appears to have been of a similar size and appearance but is now partly tumbled. There is no visible trace of a cross (MA080-014002-) which is shown immediately to S of the well on the 1838 OS 6-inch map, and is indicated as ‘Cross (Site of)’ on the 1919 edition.   Description

  Associated with a holy well (MA080-014001). A cross is indicated to S of the well and is named ‘Cross’ on the 1838 OS 6-inch map. It is indicated as ‘Cross (Site of)’ on the 1919 edition.   Description

  Located immediately to S of a holy well (MA080-014001). A pillar-like cairn (diam. 0.8-1m; H 0.6m) with a roughly circular cross-section, constructed of unmortared field stones. A hawthorn bush growing adjacent to the cairn has destabilised it and caused it to collapse. Another penitential station (MA080-014003-) of similar form is located immediately to S.   Description

  Located a few meters to SE of a holy well (MA080-014001). This penitential station consists of drystone pillar-like structure (diam. 0.8m; H 1.1m) built of rough field stones. It is roughly circular in cross-section. Another penitential station (MA080-014003) of similar form is located immediately to N, between this one and the holy well.
