- MA040-002 Enclosure
Description
In pasture. There is a farmstead immediately to E. A roughly circular rath-like embanked enclosure is shown on 1838 OS 6-inch map, and a circular hachured enclosure (diam. c. 20m), bisected on NE-SW axis by laneway, is shown on 25-inch plan; it is not shown on 1922 OS 6-inch edition. This enclosure has been levelled; there is no visible surface trace at ground level, bar a slight rise without a clearly defined outline. It is bisected roughly centrally by NE-SW field wall. There is a wedge tomb (MA040-094) 20m to ENE. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 20 April 2020

Description
In pasture, on a slight rise with a gentle slope down to NW. There is a ruined vernacular farmstead lies 15m to S. A roughly circular embanked enclosure (diam. 7-10m) is shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch; it is not shown on later map editions. There is no visible trace at ground level. Description
In pasture, prominently sited on a rise, providing good views of the surrounding undulating terrain. A steep fall of ground on the W side drops to an expanse of boggy ground, now planted with forestry. Lough Corrower is 190m to SW. Raised circular area (26m N−S; 27m E−W) defined by an earthen bank. The bank (Wth 4.2m; int. H 0.85m; ext. H 0.55m at E) is best preserved on the E arc, where its well defined internal slope with rough stone facing in parts. At N and S it retains only a low internal rim, and on the W arc it is largely reduced to a scarp, which merges with the steep natural fall of ground. Much loose stone, evident along the top of the bank, may be the result of field clearance activity. A roughly stone-lined gap (Wth 2.4m at inner edge, 1.4m at ext.) in the bank at NE may be the original entrance. On its outer edge the gap is now blocked by a rough bank of earth and stones, roughly faced with stones, and the whole is engulfed in overgrowth. The interior is split level: a scarp (H 0.55m) extends across the interior, on a slightly curving NW−S axis, slightly to E of centre. The scarp is now low and dilapidated, but it appears to have been faced with stones. The interior ground level is higher to W and S of this scarp, and this is where a souterrain (MA040-004002-) is located. The rath is engulfed in a thicket of blackthorn. There is much stone strewn over the interior surface, especially in the E half. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 20 April 2020
- MA040-004002 Souterrain
Description
In a rath (MA040-004001-). This souterrain is indicated as ‘Caves’ on the 1922 OS 6-inch map. In the W half of the rath interior, which is at a slightly higher level than the E half, there are two lintelled opening to the souterrain. One opening is located roughly in the centre of the W half. Here there is a shallow grassed over subrectangular depression, with stone-faced sides, which represents a short roofless section of passage. On the S side of the depression there is an in situ lintel covering an opening into an intact passage which extends to S. The lintelled opening (Wth 0.87m; H 0.35m) has drystone side walls built of rounded stones. An area of slight surface subsidence, located 4m to SSW may also be related to the souterrain. A second lintelled opening (Wth 1.23m; H 0.65m) is located on the inner edge of the bank scarp to W; it covers a drystone passage which to extend to SSE for several meters Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 20 April 2020

Description
In pasture, on a slight rise in undulating terrain. Slightly raised circular area (c. 25m) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 3.4m; int. H 0.85m at S; ext. H 0.9m at S, 1.4m at NNE). The bank is largely reduced to a scarp, with a low internal rim, in parts at W and E. There are two eroded breaks in the bank at WSW (Wth 1m) and at W (Wth 1.4m). The perimeter is ringed with hawthorn and blackthorn, and a dense thicket of blackthorn and brambles covers much of the interior. There is a possible rath (MA040-007) 115m to S. Description
In pasture, on a slight rise. A roughly circular embanked enclosure (diam. c. 10-15m) is shown on the 1838 and 1922 OS 6-inch maps. A slight undulation may correspond to the SW side of the enclosure, otherwise there is no visible surface trace. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 20 April 2020
- MA040-007 Enclosure
Description
In pasture, located on a slight rise in undulating terrain, with good views to E−SE. This enclosure, probably a rath, is shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map as a circular embanked enclosure, abutted by a field boundary at NE, and on the 1922 edition as a circular hachured enclosure (diam. 25-30m) incorporated into a NE−SW field boundary on the N arc, with another field boundary, on a NW−SE axis, cutting through the W half of the interior. It has been has been levelled. The NE−SW field boundary, which lay at the N end of the enclosure, has also been removed. A short length of the NW-SE field fence is intact, and abutting its W side there is a remnant of the original enclosure bank or scarp. It is evident as a low rise describing a shallow arc SW−NW. There is a rath (MA040-005----) 115m to N. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 20 April 2020
- MA040-050 Enclosure
Description
In pasture, located on top of a small hillock. Views are somewhat restricted to N by a low ridge, but extensive to S−W, overlooking expanses of poorly drained land/bog, much of which is now planted with forestry. Corrower Lough, now dried up, is located 250m to W. Nephin Mountain is visible on the horizon to WSW. This enclosure is not shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map; it is depicted on the 1922 edition as a circular hachured enclosure. It consist of a slightly raised circular area (15m E−W; 14.5m N−S) defined by remnants of a bank or scarp. It spans the N−S width of the hillock so that it is enhanced on those sides by the natural fall of ground. A low, poorly defined stony bank (Wth c. 2m; int. H 0.25m; ext. H 0.7m) can be traced on the N arc; elsewhere it is largely reduced to a scarp, topped with loose heaps of field clearance stones, particularly on the W arc. The scarp appears to merge with the natural slope at S, but is difficult to examine due to overgrowth and heaps of stones. There a break in the scarp at ESE, possibly the location of an original entrance. The interior is level, with an uneven surface. The perimeter is ringed with blackthorn, ash and sycamore trees. Two fulacht fia (MA040-106----; MA040-107----) are located 40m to S and 65m to SW, respectively. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 25 May 2020

Description
In pasture, located on a rise in undulating terrain. To the S−SW there is an area of poorly drained land, now planted with forestry. Shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map as a circular embanked enclosure; by the time of the 1922 edition it appears to have been truncated on the SW side by a straight field boundary and is depicted as a D-shaped enclosure. Raised D-shaped area (28m NW−SE; c. 22m NE−SW) defined on the curving side by a scarp (ext. H 1.6m at NE, 0.9m at SE), and on the straight side at SW by a field wall/property boundary. At NW−E the scarp is topped by raised stony rim (Wth 1-1.6m), which appears to be the tumbled remnants of a later field wall, with much stone tumble also on the scarp slope; and at E−S an extant field wall (Wth 1m; H 1-1.4m) tops the scarp, mirroring its curve. This appears to be a rath, originally circular in plan, which was modified in the modern era and incorporated into a system of field walls. The perimeter is ringed with blackthorn, hawthorn and brambles, and blackthorn scrub encroaches on the interior. There is an enclosure (MA040-099----) 30m to SE and a rath (MA040-052----) 90m to SE. Description
In pasture, located on a rise, with a fall of ground to E to an area of wet ground. Roughly oval raised area (c. 19.5m N−S; c. 16m E−W) defined by a scarp (H 0.7m). The interior slopes down by as much as 1-1.5m from centre to E, mirroring the natural slope. Short semicircular sections of the scarp at N and SE−S have been quarried out. A N−S field fence clips the scarp along the W side of the enclosure, and remnants of a perpendicular field wall extends W from it across the S half of the interior. Grass cover, with blackthorn scrub encroaching from the field fence/hedgerow at W. There is an enclosure (MA040-099----) 45m to NW and a rath (MA040-051----) 90m to NW. Description
In pasture, located on a NW-facing slope in sharply undulating terrain. There are good views to SW−W; rising ground restricts views N−SE. Raised circular area (c. 25m N−S; c. 25m E−W) enclosed by an earthen bank (Wth 5.5m at NW, c. 4m at E; int. H 0.3-0.4m; ext. H 2.8m at NW, 0.8m at E), which has largely been reduced to a scarp with a broad, low internal rim. Stones protruding along the inner edge of the bank at W−NW may be remnants of a kerb. There are narrow breaks, eroded by farm stock, in the scarp at S and W, and there is a possible entrance gap at SE, now obscured by overgrowth. The interior is level. There is no obvious trace of the souterrain (MA040-053002), which is indicated as ‘Cave’ in the S half of the interior on the 1922 OS 6-inch map. A field fence on a NE−SW axis lies immediately outside the bank scarp at SE−S, and remnants of drystone facing along the base of the external face of the bank/scarp at E−SE indicate where another field fence has been removed. Blackthorn scrub is encroaching on the interior, especially at E and S; the bank is thickly ringed with hawthorn, blackthorn and brambles. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 25 May 2020

Description
In a rath (MA040-053001). A souterrain, indicated as ‘Cave’, is shown in the S half of the interior on the 1922 OS 6-inch map. There is no definitive trace of this now at ground surface. A small, shallow circular surface depression (diam. 1.4m; D 0.2m) is evident slightly SE of centre; this might be surface subsidence related to the souterrain. Description
In pasture, located on top of a hill, with a steep fall of ground at S, W and N. There are very good views, especially to W, over the surrounding sharply undulating terrain. This monument is not indicated on the 1838 OS 6-inch map, where the location is marked with a trigonometrical point; it is shown on the 1922 edition as a small hachured circular feature (diam. c. 10m). When inspected in 1996, it was engulfed in an impenetrable thicket of blackthorn, brambles, hawthorn and hazel, and it was not possible to fully examine it. In parts at E and NE a slightly raised area defined by a scarp (H 1m at E) could be glimpsed, with remnants of a field wall on a roughly N-S axis immediately outside it. The monument was later destroyed during land reclamation works. Its exact nature is unknown; it may have been a mound or a form of barrow. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 25 May 2020

Description
In pasture, located on a rise in an area of undulating terrain, with Lough Brohly located 300m to SE. Views good but not extensive; best to E where the rising slopes of the OX Mountains define the horizon. Slightly raised circular area (c. 20m NE−SW; 23m NW−SE) defined by a stony bank, partly levelled to a scarp. The rath is bisected to NW of centre by a field wall/property boundary on a NE−SW axis. The third of the rath to NW of the field fence is defined at SW−N by a low, stony bank (Wth c. 3m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 0.6-1m); there are sycamore and pine trees growing on the bank and in the interior. The two thirds of the rath to SE of the field fence is grass-covered, and is defined by a bank which has been levelled to a broadly sloping stony scarp (ext. H 1m, 1.4m at S); it is lowest at NE, but has a broader, steeper slump at SE where it merges with a natural fall of ground. Heaps of field clearance stones lie adjacent to the rath at W. - MA040-094 Megalithic tomb - wedge tomb
Description
In pasture, located on the level top of a low rise, in an area of undulating terrain. The location provides good, though generally not extensive, views. The Ox Mountains define the skyline at NE−SE, and Nephin Mountain is a focal point on the far horizon to SW. This wedge tomb is a National Monument in State care (no. 293). It is not indicated on the 1838 and 1922 OS 6-inch maps. OPW Topographical Files record the traditional name as 'Tober na Cloiche (Tubbernaclogha)'. It consists of roughly oval cairn (11m NE−SW; 9.5m NW−SE; H 0.7m) of earth and stones, oriented NE−SW. The cairn is largely grass-covered, with medium to large stones and boulders protruding from the sod, and scattered loosely on top. Several large rounded boulders around the perimeter of the cairn, especially at S and W, appear to be in situ kerb stones. Some of the looser stones on top may be the result of relatively recent field clearance activity. A very large irregular-shaped boulder (c. 2m NW−SE; c. 1.8m NE−SW; H c. 0.6-0.7m) rests on top of the cairn towards its SW end. The boulder is roughly triangular in cross-section, rising to an irregular-shaped peak at top above a flat base. It serves as a capstone over a shallow hollow or void in the cairn, which is partly infilled with loose stone. Description
In pasture, located on a rise with a fall of ground to S−SW, overlooking an area of lowlying damp ground. An oval embanked enclosure (diam. 25-30 E−W; c. 20m N−S) is shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map; it is not shown on the 1922 edition. The enclosure has been partly levelled. A low semicircular raised area (27m ESE−WSW; 15.4m N−S) can be traced, defined on the curving side at E−WSW by a levelled scarp (Wth slope 6.6m; H 1.3m at S), merging with a natural slope. It is cut at W by a field fence on a NE−SW axis. At N it is bordered by a field fence on a roughly E−W axis, which appears to respect or retain the original N−NNE arc of the enclosure. There is a rath (MA040-051----) 30m to NW and an enclosure (MA040-052----) 45m to E. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 26 May 2020

Description
In pasture, close to the SE boundary of Carrowcastle townland, located on a ridge, within a broad natural depression encircled by gently rising ground, which largely blocks views except to SE towards a skyline dominated by the Ox Mountains. Massive, sub-rectangular upright stone block (H 2m; Wth c. 0.85m; T c. 0.35m), with quartz inclusions. The long axis is NNW–SSE, and has an elongated diamond shape in cross-section. Approximately half way up the stone, the sides begin to incline inwards towards a narrow top which is abruptly flat. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 12 June 2020
- MA040-106 Fulacht fia
Description
In pasture, located on the N bank of a canalised stream/drain (Wth 1.6m; D 0.5m), which intersects 30m to E with a lowlying hollow of wet ground. A grass-covered mound (c. 11m N-S; c. 15m E-W; H c. 0.6-0.8m) composed of angular stones in a matrix of black, charcoal-rich soil. Some large stones break the surface of the mound. The limits of the mound are not clearly defined. A gap (W c. 4m), possibly the location of the trough, intervenes between the main body of the mound and a smaller rise at E; alternatively the gap may the result of disturbance. The S edge of the mound has been eroded by farm stock fording the stream at this point. Another fulacht fia (MA040-107---) is located c. 20m to W.
