  Description

  At the outer edge of a shelf towards the bottom of a N-facing slope. D-shaped grass-covered area (dims 35.9m E-W; 35.4m N-S), which remains unplanted in a coniferous forest, defined by an earthen bank (Wth 3-3.6m; int. H 0.3m at E to 0.8m generally; ext. H 1.1-1.4m) NE-S-NW. The outer fosse (at W: Wth of top 5.8m; Wth of base 2.4m; D 1m) is bordered by a field bank SW-NW, and represented by a band of rushes (Wth 2-5.5m) NE-S-SW. The entrance (Wth 2.2m) and causeway (Wth 3.5m) are at SSW, while the perimeter is truncated (L 24m) by an E-W road bank at N. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010

• RO022-056001 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Towards the bottom of the N-facing slope of Rathcroghan ridge. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 33m E-W; 32.5m N-S) defined by a scarp (H 0.4-0.6m), with a slight bank (Wth 3.7m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.6m) on the perimeter NE-E. There are slight traces of a fosse at N (Wth of base 4.5m) and S (Wth of base 3.5m), and a large overgrown quarry (dims c. 20m N-S; c. 4m E-W; D c. 2m) on the perimeter SW-NW. • RO022-056002 Road - road/trackway
  Description

  On the N-facing slope of Rathcroghan ridge. It ran from the complex rath of Rathmore (RO022-056017-) down the slope just W of enclosure (RO022-056015-), E of barrow (RO022-056004-) and the mound Croghaunbawn (RO022-056003-) to an E-W public road (L c. 2 km). It may have been continued c. 1km to the N by a N-S public road, and the avenue to Mantua House (total L c. 4km). Only short sections are visible to-day, but it is known locally to be a hard stony surface which parches in dry weather. Just N of Rathmore it is a grass-covered causeway (Wth 6m; H c. 0.4m; L c. 100m) with a drystone wall on the E side. About 200m to the N is a further section (L c.100m) visible as a causeway (Wth 2m; H 0.3-0.6m) with a drystone wall down the centre and a flat-bottomed silted ditch (Wth of base 1.7m; D 0.3m) on the W side. W of the ditch a parched strip (Wth c. 2m) indicates a bank. To the N of an E-W public lane in Ballyconboy it is visible as a causeway (Wth 7m; H c. 0.2m; L c. 300m) from which a stone wall has been removed and with a lush grass strip on the W side.   Description

  Marked only on the 1927 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, and situated on a slight rise of the N-facing slope of the Rathcroghan ridge with a large quarry immediately to the N. Rectangular mound of earth and stones (dims. 2.5m N-S; 1.4m E-W; H 0.4m), which is probably spoil.   Description

  Towards the top of the N-facing slope of Rathcroghan ridge. An area of c. 7 ha (c. 15 acres) W of barrow (RO022-056005-) contains pits in two principal groups. A double line of about nine pits (dims c. 12m x c. 5-7m; D 0.3-0.8m) runs NE-SW and ends at SW in a pond.   Description

  Towards the top of the N-facing slope of Rathcroghan ridge. Circular grass-covered and flat-topped earthen mound (diam. of base 7.6m NE-SW; 7m NW-SE; diam. of top 3m NW-SE; 2.8m NE-SW; H 0.8m at NW to 1.2m at SW) with a rectangular grass-covered platform (dims 6.5m NW-SE; 7.3m NE-SW) defined by scarps (H 0.6-0.8m) attached to the NW. • RO022-056015 Earthwork
  Description

  Marked as a circular embanked enclosure (ext. diam. c. 20m) on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, and as a fragment of a bank (C c. 30m) E-S-W on the 1927. ed. Situated at the S end of a low N-S ridge on the summit of Rathcroghan plateau. Described as a rectangular enclosure of c. 1 ha. (c. 2.5 acres) defined by an earthen bank (Wth c. 2m) with an inner ditch or fosse (Wth c. 1.8m; D c. 0.75m) and an outer fosse (Wth c. 3.5m; D c. 0.8m) at N that had an entrance through it. At S there was a double bank (Knox 1914a, 16). This is probably a description of fields which are still extant, but the mapped feature is not now visible at ground level in pasture.
