  Description

  Marked as a large circular or polygonal feature (diam. c. 100m) with a house called Rockfield at its centre on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, and as a large enclosure (diam. c. 100m N-S; c. 100m E-W) on the 1928 ed. Situated on a low broad E-W ridge. No feature is visible at ground level in pasture, and it clearly was a drystone-built enclosure associated with the house which was built on rock outcrop. • RO041-012 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  At the crest of the SE-facing slope of a hill. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 31.1m N-S; 30.9m E-W) defined by a flat-topped earthen bank (Wth of base 4.4m at N to 5.4m at W; Wth of top 1.1m at N to 2.5m at W; int. H 0.4m at N to 0.8m generally) which survives everywhere except ENE-SE. It is surrounded by a flat-bottomed fosse (Wth of top 5.9-7.2m; Wth of base 2.8-3.5m; D 0.2m NW-NE to 0.6-0.9m generally) which contains some bushes and an outer bank Wth 1-3m; H 0.1-0.2m) composed largely of field stones. There is an entrance (Wth 3m) and causeway (Wth 4m) at SE, and the interior is overlain by a WNW-ESE field bank N of the centre. The fosse is eroded and the outer bank missing N of this feature.   Description

  Towards the bottom of a gentle S-facing slope, c. 200m from the NW-SE River Suck. A granite boulder (dims. c. 0.9m x c. 0.7m; H c. 0.6m) with curvilinear La Tene art incised on it is beside the avenue into a farm beside the ruined Castlestrange House.   Description

  Depicted as a large suboval enclosure (dims c. 130m NW-SE; c. 95m NE-SW) on the 1837 and 1928 eds of the OS 6-inch map, and situated on a natural rise in the floodplain of the River Suck, a SE-NW section of which is c. 130m to the SW.   Marked as a small wood on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map and as an oval feature (dims c. 80m NE-SW; c. 55m NW-SE) on the 1928 ed. Situated towards the bottom of a gentle S-facing slope. It is not visible at ground level in pasture, but is visible as a vegetation mark in grass defined by a narrow bank and fosse feature which cut across a pre-existing lazy-bed system (ASIAP (185) 24). It is not visible at ground level in pasture, but is visible as a vegetation mark defined by a narrow fosse feature which cuts across a pre-existing lazy-bed system (ASIAP (185) 28-33). D 0.1m generally to 0.4m at NW), with slight traces of an inner bank (Wth 3.4m; int. H 0.1m) NW-NE. There is no identifiable original entrance, but there is a slight depression (dims 11m N-S; 5.5m E-W; D 0.3m), possibly a souterrain (RO041-128002-), inside the perimeter at W.   Description

  At the bottom of an E-facing slope. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 36.8m E-W; 36.5m N-S) defined by a slight earthen bank (Wth 4.3m; int. H 0.1m; ext. H 0.3m) at S and a complete rounded fosse (Wth of top 6.7-9.2m; Wth of base 2.7-4.7m; int. D 0.3-0.5m; ext. D 0.1-0.2m). • Castlestrange, farmyard complex, 1810–1850 · Regional interest
  Description

  L-plan range of two-storey outbuildings to east of ruinous country house, built c.1830, comprising U-plan coach house and stables now in use as private house. Rear of house faces onto courtyard. Pitched slate roof with terracotta ridge tiles and stone chimneystacks. Random coursed stone walls, rendered to north-facing elevation. Square-headed window openings with replacement aluminium frames. Adjacent outbuilding with half-hipped slate roof and random coursed limestone walls, now in use as farm building. Pedimented bellcote to yard and fuel store with pointed-arch openings. Derelict U-plan coach house and stables with squared limestone walls and tooled limestone cornice and quoins, having family crest set into wall. Limestone surrounds to carriage arch and door openings and red brick surrounds to window openings. Additional coach house to east, accessed through wrought-iron gate with ashlar stone piers. Three-bay single-storey gate lodge to south, with attic storey. Nearby is ruin of three-bay three-storey former country house over basement, built c.1830.
