• RO029-013001 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  On a gentle N-facing slope in the grounds of Strokestown Workhouse. Circular overgrown area (diam. 40m N-S; 39m E-W) defined by an overgrown earthen bank (Wth 3.5-4.3m; int. H 0.5-0.6m; ext. H 1m) and rounded fosse (at W: Wth of top 5m; Wth of base 2.8m; D 0.9m). It was surrounded by a masonry wall in a rectangular enclosure and used as the burial ground (RO028-013002-) of the Strokestown Workhouse, which was c. 100m to the N and is now removed without trace. There is no visible evidence of burial, although there is a memorial at the entrance. The possible rath (RO029-014----) is c. 70m to the ESE. • RO029-013002 Burial ground
  Description

  On a gentle N-facing slope in the grounds of Strokestown Workhouse. Rath (RO029-013001-) was used as the Burial Ground of the Strokestown Workhouse, which was c. 100m to the N and which has now been removed without trace. The graveyard is a rectangular overgrown area (dims c. 65m NNE-SSW; c. 55m WNW-ESE) defined by masonry walls with an entrance gate towards the W end of the N wall. • RO029-014 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Marked as a circular embanked enclosure (ext. diam. c. 30m) on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map and as a fragment of a bank on the 1915 ed. Situated on a gentle N-facing slope, it is now occupied by the gardens of private houses and no feature is visible at ground level. Rath (RO029-013001-) is c. 70m to the WNW.   Description

  Marked only on the 1915 ed. of the OS 6-inch map as a small hachured feature. Located at the crest of the N end of a low NW-SE ridge. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 15.5m N-S) defined by a flat-topped earthen bank with some stones (Wth of top 2.8m; Wth of base 4.3-5.3m; int. H 0.2-0.3m; ext. H 0.3-0.9m), which has been removed SW-NW. It may be a ring-barrow, and it has been removed since 1996 (Bing c. 2013). Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010

  Description

  On a gentle E-facing slope. Oval grass-covered area (dims 55.9m N-S; 44.3m E-W) defined by a flat-topped, overgrown earthen bank (Wth of top 2.1-3.4m; Wth of base 3.3-6.8m; int. H 0.3-1.1m; ext. H 1.4-1.5m) which is reduced to a scarp (H 0.2m) ENE-ESE, and an outer rounded fosse (Wth of top 6-6.5m; Wth of base 3.2-5m; D 0.2m N-E to 0.8m S-W). There is no identifiable original entrance, and an overgrown field bank circumscribes the outer edge of the fosse NNE-E-SSW (max. ext. dims 72.4m N-S; 57.7m E-W).   Description

  On a gentle S-facing slope. Circular overgrown area (diam. 46m N-S; 42m E-W) defined by an overgrown earthen bank (at S-W: Wth 3.4-3.8m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 1.1-1.4m; at N-E: Wth 5.6-6.3m; int. H 0.7-0.8m; ext. H 1.2-1.6m) and outer fosse (Wth of top 4.4-5.6m; Wth of base 1.2-2.8m; D 0.8-0.9m). The bank has been incorporated into field banks NW-E-S, and the fosse has been re-cut as a drain NNE-SE. There is no identifiable original entrance. Rath (RO029-016----) is c. 180m to the NNE.
