• RO008-003 Ringfort - cashel
  Description

  At the crest of a gentle NE facing slope. Oval grass-covered area (int. dims 35.6m E-W; 28.3m N-S) defined by a stone spread (Wth 2.8-5.8m; int. H 0.4-1.5m; ext. H 0.5-0.8m) enhanced by recent field clearance and overlain by a drystone field wall (Wth 0.8-0.9m; H 0.8-0.9m). Some original inner facing stones survive at E. A rectangular drystone-built sheep pen (dims 10m E-W; 6m N-S) abuts the outer face of the wall at NNE, and an L-shaped drystone-built sheep pen (dims 2m N-S; 2m E-W) abuts the outer face of the wall at E. There is an entrance (Wth 3m), probably modern, at WSW, and the site is bisected by an ENE-WSW field wall. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010

  Description

  Marked as a circular feature (diam. c. 20m) on the 1837 (MA 64) and 1915 (diam. c. 25m) eds. of the OS 6-inch map, and situated at the crest of the S-facing slope of an E-W ridge. Subcircular grass-covered area (dims 25.5m N-S; c. 18.5m E-W) defined by the base of a stone wall with visible facing-stones (at W: Wth of base 2.1m; H 0.2-0.4m) SW-NW and a scarp (at E: H 0.1m; at S: 1.6m) E-SW. It is overlain by a N-S drystone wall W of the centre and an E-W drystone wall on the perimeter at N and had been reclaimed. Souterrain (RO008-005002-) is on the perimeter at S and the cashel is inside the S edge of cashel (RO008-005003-). Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010

  Description

  Marked as a Cave on the 1837 (MA 64) and 1915 eds of the OS 6-inch and situated at the crest of a S-facing slope on the perimeter of cashel (RO008-005001-) at S. Drystone-built, lintelled and corbelled passage (dims 5.1m N-S; 1.7m E-W; max. H 1.2m) now entered at S with a blocked creep (Wth 0.5m; H 0.5m plus) at the N end which has two lintels with cavities like vents (H 0.1m) above and below the upper lintel.   Description

  At the crest of a S-facing slope. D-shaped grass and scrub-covered area (int. dims 32m N-S; 21m E-W) defined by the base of a stone wall with visible facing stones (at N: Wth 1.5m; H 0.4m) SSW-N. It is bisected by a N-S drystone wall and does not survive E of this feature. The S edge of cashel (RO008-005001-) is built on the perimeter at S.
