H 1.55m; ext. H 1.35m) with some scrub, separated by a fosse (at NNW: Wth of top 4.7m; Wth of base 2.5m; ext. D 1.15m), which is barely visible ESE-SW, from an outer bank (at NNW: Wth 4m; ext.   Marked as a small circular feature (diam. c. 5m) on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, and situated on a gentle SW-facing slope.   Description

  On a gentle SW-facing slope. Subrectangular grass-covered area (dims 54m NE-SW; 46.6m NW-SE) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 4.8-5.3m; int. H 0.55-0.6m; ext. H 1.45-1.55m) and outer fosse (Wth of top 4.8-5.8m; Wth of base 1.6-2.5m; D 0.6-0.95m), with an outer bank (at SE: Wth 2.7m; ext. H 0.35m) N-S-W. The entrance through the inner (Wth 4.1m) and outer (Wth 10m) banks and causeway are at SW. There is a circular hut-site (RO045-101002-) (ext. diam. 14.5m NE-SW; 12.5m NW-SE) defined by a grass-covered earthen bank (Wth c. 3m) inside the bank at W, and the fosse is extended into a pond at N. • RO045-102 Souterrain
  Description

  Towards the bottom of a slight E-facing slope in a low-lying landscape. Discovered in 1986 during the improvement of the N 61 Athlone-Roscommon road when the outer chamber was unroofed. It consisted of a corbelled subrectangular chamber (dims c. 3.5m NE-SW; 1.6m NW-SE; H c. 1.6m) with a blocked creep at the S end of the NW wall and an air vent in the SW wall. At the N end of the SE wall a creep (Wth 0.35-0.8m; H 0.6-0.9m; L 1.45m) led to the S end of the NW wall of a second corbelled subrectangular chamber (dims 3.9m NE-SW; 1.6m E-W; H 1.9m) which has an air vent in the S wall and a blocked creep at the N end of the NW wall.   Description

  Marked as a D-shaped embanked enclosure (ext. dims c. 40m NW-SE; c. 35m NE-SW) truncated at SW by a field boundary on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, and situated on a rise in a low-lying landscape. The location is now occupied by St John's Roman Catholic church, which was built in the early 1840s (Beirne 2000, 279).   Description

  Visible on aerial photographs (GSIAP: M222-3), and situated on a slight NE-facing slope overlooking a broad, shallow NNW-SSE valley. Circular grass-covered area (int. diam. 45m WNW-ESE; c. 45m NNE-SSW) defined by a grass-covered stone spread (Wth 3.2-4.6m; int. H 0.7-0.8m; ext. H 0.15-0.5m) with internal and external facing-stones intermittently visible (at NNW: Wth of wall 1.4m). The entrance (Wth 4.7m) at E may be original. Two walls of a house site (RO045-104002-) (ext. dims 6.3m x 5.6m) survive inside the perimeter at NW. A NW-SE field wall truncates the monument towards the perimeter at SW.   Description

  On the crest of a low NNW-SSE ridge in a low-lying landscape. Circular tower (ext. diam. 6m; int. diam. 4.2m; H c. 6.6m) of three floors, each upper floor supported on rebates. Opposed doorways face NNW and SSE at the ground floor and there is a blocked window at SW on the ground floor. The first floor has four slit windows and the second floor only two.   Marked as a circular feature (diam. c. 30m) on the 1837 and 1915 eds of the OS 6-inch map where it is described in italic lettering as Mulberry Clump on the latter. Situated on the crest of a low NNW-SSE ridge. An arc (C 19m) of an earthen bank (Wth 5m; int. H 1.15m; ext. H 0.7m) survives SSW-WNW. The fortified house (RO045-107001-) is c. 140m to the NE. • RO045-107001 House - 17th century
  Description

  A ruined castle at Killaghan is depicted on the Strafford map of c. 1636 (Simington 1949, Athlone (263)) and Sir Luke Dillon of Lough Glynn (RO020-003001-) owned 256 acres there in 1641. He also owned over 1300 acres elsewhere in St John’s parish, which the family retained through the Cromwellian settlement (ibid. 114-5). The house is situated on a slight ENE-facing slope. A rectangular block of two storeys and attic (ext. dims 15.35m ENE-WSW; 7m NNE-SSE) faces S, but the S and most of the N walls do not survive. There was a doorway towards the W end of the N wall and large fireplaces at each floor in the E and W gables, but only the attic had windows in the gables. A flanking tower to the SE (ext. dims 7.5m NNW-SSE; 6.2m ENE-WSW) has fireplaces in the S wall at its two floors and attic, an oven and two gun-loops in the E wall, and doorways to the outside and the main block in the N wall at the ground floor. A similar flanking tower to the SW (ext. dims 6.5m NNW-SSE; 6.15m ENE-WSW) has doorways to the main block and the outside at ground level in the N wall with windows on the E and W walls. The first floor had at least one window and possibly three gun-loops in the E wall. There is a false chimney-stack over the gabled S wall. The two flanking towers have string-courses beneath the roof-line. Archaeological testing (05E1192) c. 70-80m to the SE failed to produce any related material (Tierney 2005). The house is within a rectangular bawn (RO045-107002-) (dims c. 52m N-S; c. 28m E-W) defined by a low scarp (H 0.3m) down to the interior at N and an external scarp (H 0.4m) at S. Its W edge may be defined by a N-S drystone wall, and its E edge has been removed by a N-S public road. W and N of the bawn is an L-shaped walled garden (RO045-107003-), existing mostly on the W side (dims 160m NE-SW; c. 70m NE-SW) of the public road but extending across to the E side (dims c. 75m NW-SE; c. 75m NE-SW) at N. It is defined by clay-bonded walls at NW and SW which narrow with height (Wth of base 0.6m; Wth of top 0.4m; H 2.3m). The garden walls have two robbed pointed entrances (Wth 2.3m; H 1.8m) towards the S end of the SW wall, and a single similar entrance in the NW wall. Its W edge may be defined by a N-S drystone wall, and its E edge has been removed by a N-S public road. W and N of the bawn is an L-shaped walled garden (RO045-107003-).   On a slight ENE-facing slope. The fortified house (RO045-107001-) and bawn (RO045-107002-) is surrounded by to W and N by an L-shaped walled garden, existing mostly on the W side (dims 160m NE-SW; c. 70m NE-SW) of a N-S public road but extending across to the E side (dims c. 75m NW-SE; c. 75m NE-SW) at N. It is defined by clay-bonded walls at NW and SW which narrow with height (Wth of base 0.6m; Wth of top 0.4m; H 2.3m).   Towards the bottom of an ENE-facing slope. Subcircular grass-covered area (diam. 41.5m WNW-ESE; 35.4m NNE-SSW) defined by a grass-covered earth and stone bank (at WNW: Wth 4.5m; int. H 0.75m, ext. H 0.8m) with evidence of inner and outer facing-stones (at NNE: Wth of wall 1.9m) N-ENE, and traces of a fosse (Wth of top 5m; Wth of base 2m) WSW-W. There is no identifiable original entrance, but souterrain (RO045-10802-) is inside the perimeter at NNW. The monument is bisected by a NE-SW field wall. An area of about 6 acres (c. 2.5 ha) contains grass-covered collapsed field walls of small rectangular fields (dims c. 50m x c. 20m) which are overlain by lazy beds. The house (RO045-226----) is just to the S. Raths (RO045-108001-; RO045-110----) are c. 90m to the NW and 130m to the W, and cashel (RO045-111----) is c. 150m to the SW.   Visible as a circular feature on aerial photographs (GSIAP: M 222-3), and situated on a gentle ENE-facing slope. Subrectangular or D-shaped grass-covered area (dims 33m N-S; c. 25m E-W) defined by a grass-covered earth and stone bank (at E: Wth 5.2m; int. H 0.25m; ext. H 1.35m), with traces of outer facing-stones NNE-ENE. There is no visible fosse or identifiable original entrance and the perimeter is truncated by a NW-SE field wall at SW. Lazy-beds and a fragment of a grass-covered field wall survive in the interior. Rath (RO045-108001-) is c. 130m to the NE, cashel (RO045-111----) is c. 110m to the SSW, and field system (RO045-109----) is c. 90m to the E.   Visible on aerial photographs (GSIAP: M 222-3), and situated on a shelf of a gentle ENE-facing slope of a reclaimed karst landscape. Circular area (int. diam. 48.5m NNW-SSE; 48.2m ENE-WSW) defined by a grass-covered stone spread (Wth 8-10m; int. H 0.55-0.85m; ext. H 0.1-0.35m). A relict E-W field bank crosses the interior with two small paddocks (dims c. 15m x 8-17m) in the interior N of this feature. There is no identifiable original entrance.   On the crest at the N end of a slight NNW-SSE ridge. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 35.4m NE-SW; 34m NW-SE) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 3.8-4m; int. H 0.1-0.5m; ext. H 0.55-0.85m), with inner and outer facing-stones at S (Wth 1.4m). There is no visible fosse or identifiable original entrance. Rath (RO045-117----) is c. 160m to the WSW and cashel (RO045-118001-) is c. 210m to the SW.
