Description
On a level landscape. Circular grass-covered area (diam. c. 41m) with some beech trees and scrub defined by an earthen bank (Wth 6m; int. H 0.3-0.6m; ext. H 1.5-1.7m) S-SW and by a scarp (H 1-1.7m) elsewhere. There is no visible fosse or entrance. A curved depression (L 9m; Wth 4.5m; D 0.6-0.8m) inside the perimeter at W could be a collapsed souterrain (RO015-005002-) or a quarry. - RO015-072 Ringfort - rath
Description
First identified in an unpublished archaeological LiDAR report (Davis, 2015) and an unpublished archaeo-geophysical report (Bonsall & Gimson 2015) commissioned by Roscommon County Council as part of the Environmental Impact Assessment for the N5 Ballaghaderreen - Scramoge road development. It is situated on a slight NE-facing slope. This is a circular grass and rush-covered area (int. diam. 25m NE-SW; c. 25m NW-SE) defined by slight traces of a fosse best preserved (at NE: Wth 2m; D 0.15m) NE-S-SW, but only occasionally traceable (at WNW: Wth of top 2m; D 0.1m) elsewhere. There is no identifiable original entrance and t is bisected by a NE-SW field bank and drain. Rath (RO015-079----) is c. 60m to the NNE. Description
First identified in an unpublished archaeological LiDAR report (Davis, 2015) commissioned by Roscommon County Council as part of the Environmental Impact Assessment for the N5 Ballaghaderreen - Scramoge road development. It is located towards the bottom of a slight NE-facing slope. This is a circular grass and rush-covered area (int. diam. 26m NE-SW; c. 30m NW-SE) defined by a fosse (at W: Wth of top 6.25m; Wth of base 2.4m; D 0.2m) SW-W-ENE, but the perimeter cannot be traced elsewhere because it is overlain by a NE-SW farm track. There is no identifiable original entrance and it is overlain by a NE-SW field bank and drain. Rath (RO015-072----) is c. 60m to the SSW. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload; 5 August, 2016
