  Description

  This feature, which is indicated only on the 1838 OS 6-inch map, was in an area of gently rolling lowland. It would appear to have been obliterated during railway construction in the 19th century. On the map it is indicated as a feature of oval outline (c. 27m x 15m) with its long axis aligned NE-SW. It is possible that this was some form of long mound or cairn and if so could have contained a court tomb or portal tomb. Wood-Martin (1887-8, 261-2; 1888, 199-200) refers to its destruction but apparently had no information as to its nature. • SL020-266 Burial ground
  Description

  Located c. 1.1km NW of Collooney. Human skeletal remains were uncovered by machinery during bridge construction on the Ballysadare-Collooney by-pass road in 1995. Only a small area (14m x 14m) remained undisturbed and was subsequently excavated (Opie 1996, 77). A total of 37 extended inhumations were uncovered during the excavation. The burials were all in a supine position and aligned roughly E-W with the head to the W, except for one individual, possibly a priest, whose head was to the E. Grave-cuts and divides were noted in some burials and one skeleton had an arrangement of three stones under its skull. A bronze ring (int. diam. 12.5mm), which may have been part of a belt, was found on the left radius/ulna of one burial and an iron ribbon torque was found around the neck of another. Skeletal analysis of four of the burials revealed that there were three middle-aged females and one adult male. The nature of the burials and their E-W orientation suggest that the burial ground is Christian in date (Opie 1995). A second burial ground (SL020-266001-) lies c. 15m to W. • SL020-266001 Burial ground
  Description

  On top of a gravel ridge, c. 1.1km NW of Collooney. A roughly oval burial mound was uncovered by machinery prior to the development of the Ballysadare-Collooney by-pass road. Half of the mound was excavated in 1996 (Opie 1997, 96-7) while the remainder is undisturbed. The remains of at least 83 burials and 28 bone scatters were uncovered during the excavation. The burials were all inhumations in a supine position, aligned roughly E-W with the head to the W, except for one individual, possibly a priest, whose head was to the E. Most of the graves were shallow and cut into the gravel; two were stone-lined and lintelled. Some burials were also found to the S of the mound. A bullaun stone (SL020-26602-) was found in the field in which the unexcavated half of the burial ground is located. The nature of the burials and their E-W orientation suggest that the burial ground is Christian in date (ibid.). A second burial ground (SL020-266----) lies c. 15m to E.   Description

  End-of-terrace three-bay two-storey roughcast-rendered house, built c. 1870. One of a group of four. Pitched slate roof, clay ridge tiles, smooth-rendered corbelled chimneystacks, concrete verge to south gable, metal rainwater goods. Painted roughcast walls, painted smooth-rendered straight plain quoins and plinth. Square-headed window openings, painted smooth-rendered slightly projecting reveals, painted stone sills, painted one-over-one timber sash windows except two-over-one to central first floor window and one-over-two to gable. Square-headed door opening, painted smooth-rendered slightly projecting reveal, painted timber four-panel door with lower panels sheeted over, original ironmongery. Street-fronted, wide iron gate to south giving to yard to rear, located on north bank of Ballysadare River adjacent to bridge.

  Description

  Terraced three-bay two-storey stone house, built c. 1870, with cast-iron flat-roofed portico c.1910. Built as one of a group of four. Pitched artificial slate roof, smooth-rendered corbelled chimneystacks, cast-iron half-round gutters on painted timber fascia board. Coursed squared rubble limestone walling. Painted cast-iron portico fixed to front wall and carried on two fluted and moulded columns set on shallow octagonal limestone bases, Corinthian capitals to columns, studded square-section posts over with diamond-pattern mesh frieze, moulded gutters, all surmounted by decorative wrought- and cast-iron grille work with finials at corners. Square-headed window openings, dressed ashlar block-and-start surrounds, stone sills, painted two-over-two timber sash windows. Square-headed door opening, dressed ashlar block-and-start surround, painted timber four-panel door with integral fanlight c. 1990. Street-fronted.

  Description

  Attached four-bay two-storey rendered house, built c. 1860, with integral carriage arch to north and small two-storey flat-roofed return to south end of rear. Pitched slate roofs, originally two separate properties with more steeply pitched roof to single-bay block to south, clay ridge tiles, unpainted smooth-rendered corbelled chimneystacks, concrete verge upstands to single-bay block, cast-iron gutters on corbelled eaves course, cast-iron downpipe. Painted smooth-rendered ruled-and-lined walling, projecting plinth, channelled straight quoins to north end. Square-headed window openings, painted stone sills, painted two-over-two sash windows to single bay block and south end of first floor main block, painted timber casement windows c. 1970 elsewhere. Square-headed door opening, timber six-panel door c. 1980. Elliptical-headed carriage arch giving to rear. Street fronted with higher two-storey building to north and single-storey building to south.

  Description

  Detached three-bay two-storey stone station master's house, built c. 1875, now derelict. Single-storey extensions to north and south. Hipped slate main roof, pitched to extension, clay ridge and hip tiles, ashlar limestone corbelled chimneystack with yellow clay pots, rainwater goods missing, painted timber fascias on rafter ends. Squared-and-snecked limestone walling. Square-headed window openings, dressed ashlar surrounds with key stones, limestone sills, one-over-one timber sash windows (mainly missing). Square-headed door opening set below blind oculus and remains of semi-circular canopy, dressed ashlar limestone surround, timber door missing. Window panelling survives in interior. Fronts onto stone flagged platform to railway track. Coursed rubble limestone boundary wall between station house and goods shed to north.

  Detached six-bay single-storey stone railway goods shed, built c. 1875. Pitched slate roof projecting as canopy on west, clay ridge tiles, brick chimneystacks, painted projecting timber barges on paired profiled purlin ends, half-round cast-iron gutters mounted on rafter ends, cast-iron downpipes. Squared rubble limestone, tooled ashlar limestone quoins, ashlar plinth. Circular window openings, yellow brick surrounds, painted timber multi-pane casement windows. Semi-circular window openings to north and south gables, yellow brick surrounds, limestone sills, painted timber multi-pane casement windows. Square-headed door openings, yellow brick surrounds, doors missing. Railway track to east, coursed rubble limestone boundary wall between goods shed and station house to north.
