• SL020-109001 Church
  Description

  In pasture, at the top of a SW-facing slope overlooking the Ballysadare River to the E; in the N side of Kilboglashy graveyard (SL020-109002-). The roofless ruin of a rectangular gable-ended church (int. dims. 19.38m E-W; 7.9m N-S), covered with ivy, built of random-rubble limestone with shaped quoins. The apex of the E gable has collapsed but the base of a central splayed window ope (Wth c. 1.7m) is visible through the ivy (M. B. Timoney 2002, 154-5). According to O'Rorke (1878, 21), 'this window had a mullion, and consisted of two lights'. The W gable and the N wall (H c. 5m) are densely covered with overgrowth. A blocked lintelled window (max. Wth 0.9m) in the centre of the W gable and a recess (0.5m x 0.5m; D 0.5m) at its S end were recorded during a previous site inspection in 1992 (SMR (1989) file). A sketch by Wakeman (1885-6, 49) depicts a blocked-up trabeate doorway in this wall. There is a round-headed window embrasure in the E end of the S wall with a narrow round-headed light, and a similar partially blocked ope at its centre. A Romanesque doorway occurs W of the centre in this wall. The surround has two orders composed of blocks of eroded grainy light red sandstone. Both orders have moulded corners and capitals decorated with animal motifs. Springing from the capitals of the outer order is a semicircular arch with eleven voussoirs, each ornamented with a worn face in bold relief, with a plain chamfered hood-moulding. Two similar heads occur on either side of the doorway. The space under the arch is filled with random dark-red sandstone rubble and the doorway is lintelled (Wth 1.22m; H 1.8m). Internally to the W of it is a series of niches that would have held timbers to support a gallery, lit by a lintelled rectangular light high up near the W end of the S wall. The interior of the church contains many 19th-century headstones and chest-tombs. During a FÁS graveyard clean-up scheme in 1995 and 1996 a number of architectural pieces were found, including a Romanesque font, a stone head and a medieval graveslab (SL020-109010-) (M. B. Timoney 2002, 149-59). The architectural pieces included a Romanesque window hood (in the NMI), a sandstone voussoir, a round window head, a limestone window sill and an ogee window head (ibid., 152-3). The baptismal font consists of half of a hemispherical sandstone block (H 0.22m; diam. 0.6m), which is decorated on the underside with a series of ten leaves; it is in the NMI (ibid.). The sandstone head (H 0.07m; max. T 0.06m; D 0.32m) was found on the ground W of the church; it is also in the NMI. It has indications of a head-dress, the eyes slant downwards with the left eye lower than the right, the mouth is down-turned, the nose is chipped and there are indications of the left ear (ibid.). This church is on the site of an early monastery founded by St Fechin of Billa, and later of Fore, who died in 665 or 668 (Gwynn and Hadcock 1970, 160). An early ecclesiastical enclosure (SL020-109005-) may be preserved in the field boundaries to the S and W of it. It is 13th century or later and incorporates 12th-century features including the doorway and mouldings at the corners (Harbison 1972, 212; M. B. Timoney 2002, 149-50). O'Rorke (1878, 22) noted a number of breaches in the N and S walls which indicate that the church underwent a number of phases of reconstruction. Adjacent rectangular buildings (SL020-109003-, SL020-109004- and SL020-109015-) may be associated with it. An Augustinian abbey (SL020-108----) lies 250m to the W. Two enclosures (SL020-109006- and SL020-109011-) are to the SE and N, respectively. • SL020-109002 Graveyard
  Description

  Indicated on the 1838 OS 6-inch map as an irregular area (c. 50m NW-SE; c. 30m NE-SW) with a church (SL020-109001-) in its N half. It has since been extended to the SE and SW. The remains of the original enclosing wall are evident on the W and N sides. Headstones in the older section date from the 18th century to the present day and include some vaults and chest-tombs. Numerous low uninscribed grave-markers are also present. The extension is enclosed by a stone wall with two roadside gateways in the SW wall. The headstones in this section date from the mid-19th century to the present day. During a graveyard clean up in 1995 and 1996, a number of architectural pieces, a Romanesque font and a medieval graveslab were found (SL020-10910-) (M. B. Timoney 2002, 149-59). One of the architectural pieces included a piece of window tracery (SL020-109016-) that was probably from the Augustinian abbey (SL020-108----), c. 250m to the W in Abbeytown (ibid. 157-8, n. 14). A shell midden (SL020-109012-), consisting mainly of oyster shells, was discovered immediately outside the NE wall and oyster shells were also noted on the surface of the interior during the clean-up scheme (ibid., 150). An ecclesiastical enclosure (SL020-109005-) may be preserved in the field boundaries to the S and W. A rectangular building (SL020-109003-), parallel to the church, lies immediately outside the N wall and there is a similar structure (SL020-109004-) at the SW side, which has foundations of another building (SL020-109015-) on its E side (M. B. Timoney 2002, 151).   Description

  In rough pasture, on the external W end of the N wall of Kilboglashy graveyard (SL020-109002-). The ruin of a rectangular structure (on an E-W axis) which is inaccessible due to overgrowth. The E wall no longer survives. O'Rorke (1878, 23) described the building as 'internally, thirty-three feet long, and fourteen wide' having been vaulted with stone, and containing 'two apartments at least ... one in the basement, and the other a croft, between vault and roof'. O'Rorke (ibid.) concluded that this, and a similar building (SL020-109004-) c. 30m to S, are associated with the church (SL020-109001-) and may have been the refectory and Abbot's house.   Description

  In rough pasture, on the external side of the S wall of Kilboglashy graveyard (SL020-109002-) and c. 8m to SW of church (SL020-109001-); now incorporated within an extension to the graveyard. The ruin of a rectangular structure (on an E-W axis) which is built of random rubble limestone (wall T 1m) with mud mortar and densely covered with overgrowth. Only low remains of the S (H c. 4m), N and W walls are evident. There is a wide gap in the centre of the E wall. The building is described by O'Rorke (1878, 23) as 'fifty-two feet long, and twenty-three wide, measured externally' vaulted with stone and containing at least 'two apartments...one in the basement, and the other a croft, between vault and roof' and concludes that this, and a similar structure (SL020-109003-) c. 30m to N, are associated with the church and may have been the refectory and Abbot's house. • SL020-109005 Ecclesiastical enclosure
  Description

  The arc of an ecclesiastical enclosure, as indicated on the 1913 OS 6-inch map, may have been preserved in the field boundaries to the S and W of the church (SL020-109001-) and graveyard (SL020-109002-) (see Keeley 1998, 4 and fig. 3). Evidence from the map suggests that the enclosure was D-shaped with the straight side formed by the Ballysadare River. The field boundaries in the area to the S of the graveyard may have incorporated part of an outer enclosing element, as well as a possible entrance avenue and internal divisions. These field boundaries and structure indicated on the 1913 OS 6-inch map, were levelled in the late 1980s (M. B. Timoney 2002, 149). An Augustinian abbey (SL020-108----) and a silver and lead mine (SL020-107----) lie c. 250m and c. 500m to the W respectively. Two enclosures (SL020-109006- and SL020-109014-) lie within and were possibly part of the monastic settlement. • SL020-109006 Enclosure
  Description

  In rough pasture, on the W bank of the Ballysadare River. An oval area (22m E-W; 18m N-S) defined by a low scarp (int. H c. 0.5m) along the E and N arcs and by an overgrown earthen bank (ext. H c. 1m; int. 0.45m) along the W and S arcs. Clearly visible as a subrectangular enclosure in an aerial photograph (CUCAP, ASX 65) taken in 1967. Within and possibly part of the ecclesiastical enclosure (SL020-109005-) surrounding the church (SL020-109001-) and graveyard (SL020-109002-) which lie immediately to NW. A linear feature of 'stone construction' immediately to SE of the enclosure extends for 30m in a SW direction towards the road boundary wall (Keeley 1998, 5) and is also visible in the aerial photograph. A second oval enclosure (SL020-109014-) lies immediately S of the linear feature.   Description

  At the base of the S boundary wall of the extended graveyard (SL020-109002-) at Kilboglashy. Cut antler bone, oyster shells and animal bones were found 0.15-0.25m below the surface during the construction of a road to a sewage tank in 1970 (NMI). Quernstones were also found in the vicinity of the midden (NMI). A second shell midden (SL020-109012-) was subsequently found outside the NE wall of the graveyard and a third (SL020-109013-) in the field to S of the graveyard. • SL020-109009 Cairn - unclassified
  Description

  Listed in the SMR (1989) and RMP (1995) as a 'Cairn', the source of the information is unknown and there is no mention of any cairn in the site inspection. The national grid reference is the same as that for shell midden (SL020-109007-) and quern stone (SL020-109008-) at the site. An aerial photograph (CUCAP, ASX 65) taken in 1967 shows an oblong pile of stones in the field to the S of the original graveyard which may have been mistaken for a cairn.   Description

  Found within the graveyard (SL020-109002-) to the SE of the church (SL020-109001-) during a FÁS graveyard clean up in 1995 and 1996 (M. B. Timoney 2002, 152-3). A trapezoidal limestone slab (L 1.88m; Wth at top 0.41m; Wth at base 0.35m; T 0.14m) of possible 15th/16th-century date, decorated with a pair of facing animals (possibly a lion and a dragon), a sword and foliage (ibid.); this is in the care of Sligo County Council (ibid., 153). • SL020-109011 Enclosure
  Description

  In pasture, on a rounded hillock overlooking the mouth of the Ballysadare River. The hillock forms the northern extremity of a larger undulating hill to S of which the church and graveyard (SL020-109001-, SL020-109002-) are located. An oval raised area, indicated on the 1914 OS 6-inch map, is evident as a barely discernible sod-covered stony rise (Wth 0.5-1m) SW-NE. It is most clearly defined NW-N where the external scarp (H 0.5-0.8m) incorporates large stones at intervals. It appears to continue NE-E but due to dense blackthorn scrub it is impossible to confirm this. A quarry pit (8m N-S; 6.6m E-W; D 1.6m) has obliterated the S half of the enclosure. The extant remains suggest that the dimensions of the original oval enclosure were c. 20m N-S by 15m E-W. • SL020-167 Ringfort - cashel
  Description

  On top of a prominent hillock in hilly terrain at the foot of the Ox Mountains. An oval level area (33.4m E-W; 25.9m N-S), formed by levelling the top of the hillock, is enclosed by fragmentary remains of a drystone wall. Some very large stones and boulders are incorporated into the wall. From WSW-WNW the wall has been modified and incorporated into a field boundary. A number of quarry holes (long disused) have been dug into the hillock a short distance to E.   Description

  Listed in the SMR (1989) and the RMP (1995) as 'Earthwork(s)'. In 1990, an inspection of fields partially overlying the N part of the area highlighted on the RMP (1995) map in advance of a housing development was undertaken (J. Enright, 'Archaeological Report on Proposed Site for Motel Development at Kilboglashy, Ballisodare, Co. Sligo' (1990) in SMR (1989) file). No features of archaeological significance were found. • Weir, 1860–1900 · Regional interest
  Description

  Man-made concrete and rubble stone weir with associated sluice, built c. 1880. Originally a salmon weir, today it is used in conjunction with adjacent hydro-electricity generating plant to west. Spanning Ballysadare River to north of road bridge. Concrete paved paths to both sides of river.
