• SL016-012 Designed landscape feature
  Description

  Located in the garden of Carrowneden House. Not indicated on the 1837 OS 6-inch map. Included in the RMP (1995) as a possible enclosure on the basis of its depiction on the 1913 OS 6-inch map, where it is represented as a hachured arc (diam. c. 25m), curving NW–NE. It is evident as a terrace (H 1.1m) extending in an arc immediately to NNW of Carrowneden House. The house and yard buildings are constructed upon the platform defined by the terrace. • SL016-029 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated at the SW foot of a NW-SE ridge in pasture. Raised circular area (diam. 22m) enclosed by an earthen bank (Wth 4.4m; int. H 0.7m; ext. H 1.8m at S, 2.3m at N) with an external fosse (Wth 6m). At the outer edge of the fosse is a second bank (Wth 6m; int. H 1.4m; ext. H 2.2m) also with an external fosse (Wth 4m). At the outer edge of the second fosse is a third bank (Wth 5.8m; int. H 2m; ext. H 1.6m). The original entrance at ENE is marked by a break (Wth 2m) in the banks and a causeway across the fosses. • SL016-030 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In level pasture, situated on a low rise overlooked by a ridge of higher ground to W. Raised circular area (diam. 28m) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 4.7m; int. H 0.4-0.6m; ext. H 1.6m at E, 2m at W). An infilled external fosse may be indicated at E–S by a band (Wth 6m) of irises, and at SW–N by the intervening gap (Wth 4.8m) between the rath bank and a curving field bank, which may be a modification of an original external bank. At NE and E the fosse is truncated by a NW-SE modern field boundary. Original entrance was probably at SE. Within the NE quadrant, close to the inner face of the bank, is a hollow area (dims. 4m x 3m; D 0.8m) of unknown significnce. Compiled by: Patrick F. O'Donovan Date of upload: 19 January 2011

• SL016-032 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated in level pasture, a short distance W of a N-S ridge. Raised circular area (diam. 25m) defined at ENE–W by an earthen bank (Wth 3.8m) which is very low internally but has a pronounced external slope (H 0.8-1.5m). The bank is largely levelled at NW–NE. A gap of 2m intervenes between this bank and an inner bank (Wth 1.5-2m at E, 3.4m at W; H 0.6 at E, 0.9m at W) which mirrors the curve ENE–W of the outer bank. It is unclear if the inner bank is a primary feature or represents later modification of the rath. Two low parallel linear banks traverse the rath interior on a roughly NE–SW axis. The intervening gap (Wth 6m) is slightly sunken and represents the remains of a road or trackway, shown on the 1837 OS 6-inch map, which cut through the rath. Compiled by: Patrick F. • SL016-033001 Enclosure
  Description

  Situated encompassing the summit of a substantial hill. Depicted on the 1837 editon of the OS 6-inch map as a large subcircular or oval-shaped enclosure (c. 155m NNW-SSE; c. 125m ENE-WSW) defined by a field boundary. A house and accompanying garden are depicted truncating the E side. A NE-SW laneway is shown, dividing the enclosure into two approximately equal portions. The enclosure is not marked on the 1913 map. Remains comprise a raised circular area defined by widely sloping sides. How much of the enclosing element is artificial and how much the naturally-occurring slope of the hill is unknown. Centrally located within the interior is a smaller earthwork (SL016-033----) topped with a trigonometrical station. Possible quarry at E. Compiled by: Patrick F.
