  Description

  In pasture, situated adjacent to the S shore of Sligo Bay. Not marked on the 1837 OS 6-inch map but shown on the 1913 edition as a hachured angular arc. Remains of a levelled bank (Wth. c. 4.3m; H 0.4m) can be discerned extending in an arc (C c. 60m) from NNE–S. Its original function and extent are unclear. • SL011-011 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated in good pasture, on a gentle N-facing slope, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Excellent views are afforded from the site except from SE-S-WSW where limited by higher ground. Raised circular area (diam. 20.2m) enclosed by a wide, low bank of earth and stone (Wth. 0.3m - 0.7m) with evidence for both internal and external stone facing visible in places. No fosse. Partially stone-lined break in bank (Wth. 1.9m) at E is probably the original entrance. Inside the bank at ESE is a probable souterrain passage or chamber (SL011-011001-).   At a rath (SL011-011----). Inside the bank at ESE are two exposed large flat stones, possibly the roof-stones of an infilled souterrain passage or chamber.   Description

  Situated in good pasture on a gentle N-facing slope overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Excellent views in all directions are afforded from the site, except from SE-S-W where limited by higher ground. Raised circular area (diam. 22.6m) enclosed by a wide, low bank of earth and stone with evidence for both internal and external stone facing. No fosse.   Description

  At a rath (SL011-012----). Inside the bank at ESE is a low pile of of stones, U-shaped in plan (max. dim. 1.7m; max. H 0.3m). A gap has been cut through the upper portion of the bank here exposing a large quantity of stone. These features may be indicators of the presence of a souterrain here. Compiled by: Patrick F.   Description

  Situated on a gentle N-facing slope overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Raised circular area (diam. 22.4m) enclosed by a wide, low bank of earth and stone (Wth. 6m; int. H 0.2m - 0.8m) with evidence for both internal and external stone facing. No fosse. Poorly defined break in bank at SE (Wth. c.1.9m) probably represents original entrance. There is a second break in the bank at SW. Extending out at right angles for 7.5m from the outer face of the bank at NW is a linear, low bank of earth and stone (Wth. 2.4m; max. H 0.75m). From this point it changes direction and runs for a further 5.5m in a NNE direction (SL013-013001-). Adjoining the E side of the rath is a slightly raised rectangular area (24m NNE-SSW; 7.7m WNW-ESE; max. H 0.4m), probably the remains of an animal enclosure (SL013-013002-). Compiled by: Patrick F.   At a rath (SL011-013----). Extending out at right angles for 7.5m from the outer face of the bank at NW is a linear, low bank of earth and stone (Wth. 2.4m; max. H 0.75m).   Description

  Situated on slight natural rise in gently undulating pasture. Raised roughly circular area (24m E-W; 21.5m N-S) enclosed by a bank of earth and stone (Wth 4.3m; int. H 0.4m). No fosse is visible at ground level. From E-NE, the bank has been removed leaving a scarp (ext. H 0.3m). A small quarry lies immediately outside the bank at NW. A break (Wth 3.1m) in the bank at E marks the position of the original entrance. A small midden (SL011-014002-) is located to NE of centre in the interior.   Description

  Situated at base of slight W-facing slope in pasture. Named 'Toberabiddeen' on the 1837 and 1913 OS 6-inch maps. The well had been infilled with small stones leaving a level area of rubble (5m N-S; 4m E-W) that is flush with the field surface. An irregular outflow runs from the W side of the rubble area.   Description

  Situated on level ground in gently undulating pasture. Circular area (diam. 7m) enclosed by a bank of earth and stone (Wth 1.7m; int. H 0.35m). The bank is made up of an earthen core revetted on either side by thick limestone flags laid on edge (av. slab dims. L 0.6m; Wth 0.4m; H 0.35m). The revetting survives best SW-NW.   Description

  Situated in level pasture. Slightly raised roughly circular area (23m N-S; 22m E-W) enclosed by a bank of earth (Wth 6.25m; int. H 0.70m). No fosse is visible at ground level. The original entrance to the site is not recognisable. Two portions of relic field bank (each measures L 5m; H 1m) abut the external face of the bank at NW and at SE. • SL011-018 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on slight E-facing slope in pasture. Raised oval area (32m E-W; 28m N-S) enclosed by a bank (Wth 4.85m; int. H 0.25m) of earth and stone. The bank is made up of earth with many large boulders (av. dims. 1m x 1m x 1m) of limestone and quartzy conglomerates. No fosse is visible at ground level. A break (Wth 2m) through the bank at E marks the position of the original entrance. The entrance is lined by two parallel lines (both L 4m) of boulders, similar to those in the bank material, extending into the interior. A modern break (Wth 3m) cuts through the bank at NNW. • SL011-019 Fortification
  Description

  Named Castletown Castle on the OS 6-inch maps. Post-medieval fortification, probably of 17th century date. Situated on a rock outcrop on the W side of the estuary of the River Easky. Subrectangular, single-storey, split-level structure (L of N wall 9.9m; L of E wall 22.4m; L of S wall 8.7m; L of W wall 20.9m; Wall T 0.78-1.25m). The smaller, lower level is rectangular in plan (int. dims. 7.6m N-S; 3.3m E-W) and projects out 1.7m over the estuary. It contains a gun port and nine musket loops. A cross-wall divides this room from the larger upper level wihich is subrectangular in plan (int. dims. c. 11.8m N-S; c. 4m E-W) and featureless. Immediately N of these rooms is a third, rectangular room (int. dims. c. 5.7m E-W; c. 3m N-S) which is largely filled with collapse. Between 0.4m and 5.9m out from the W and N sides of this latter room is a low, curving bank of earth and stone (Wth. 1.45-4m; H 0.25-0.4m) which probably marks the circuit of a bawn wall (SL011-019001-).   Description

  At a fortification (SL011-019---). Between 0.4m and 5.9m out from the W and N sides of the N extent of the fortification is a low, curving bank (Wth. 1.45-4m; H 0.25-0.4m) of earth and stone which probably marks the circuit of a bawn wall.   Description

  Listed in the RMP (1998) as a possible stone row, this record is based on a possible ‘megalith’ marked at roughly this location on a Sligo Field Club map (per. comm. M. A. Timoney, 1989).
