• TS060-083001 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In improved, undulating pasture, on a high, natural rise. Semi-circular area (dims. 50m ENE-WSW; 24m NNW-SSE) defined by bank (overall Wth 7.75m; Wth at top 0.75m; int. H 0.85m; ext. H 1.5m) E-NW. Some rough stone-facing on exterior of bank SW-WSW and at SE. Fosse (overall Wth 7.5m; basal Wth 1.5m; D 0.65m) SE-WNW and is best defined SW-W. Interior is obscured by hay. Raised, level area (dims. 17m ENE-WSW; 9m NNW-SSE) defined by scarp (Wth 3.5m; H 0.35m) ENE-S is at W-side of interior. Substantial depression (Dth c. 2-3m) where entire N-sector of monument has been quarried in antiquity. Monument depicted on 1840-41 OS 6-inch map as a sub-circular enclosure (dims. c. 60m ENE-WSW; c. 55m NNW-SSE) truncated by the Cashel-Golden road across N-sector. • TS060-083002 Enclosure
  Description

  In improved pasture, on an E-facing slope, to immediate SE of ringfort (TS060-083001-). Only possible to see the northern arc of this monument as an 8m band of grass has been cut along margin of field for silage. The rest of the field is still in hay and nothing can be seen. Circular area depicted on aerial photograph (1273/4) defined by scarp (Wth 4.5m; H 0.5m) only seen at NW. It appears defined by a low levelled bank NNW-NNE, but this is a shared piece of ground between fosse of ringfort (TS060-083001-) and scarp of this enclosure (TS060-083002-). • TS060-085 Enclosure
  Description

  In improved, undulating pasture, with an excellent view of Rock of Cashel to NE. Oval area (overall dims. 39m ENE-WSW; 28m NNW-SSE) defined by remains of levelled bank (overall Wth 18m; Wth at top 4.5m; int. H 1.6m; ext. H 0.05m) which is better defined on interior NE-SE and less defined (overall Wth 6m; Wth at top 4m; int. H 0.1m; ext. H 0.05m) SW-NW and NW-NE. This bank may correspond to field boundary depicted on latest edition OS 6-inch map. Possible fosse (overall Wth 4.5m; basal Wth 1m; D 0.15m) NE-SE but this may be a drainage feature. Interior is uneven and sides slope inward from E and S to a generally level area. The monument is depicted on the 1st (1840-41) ed. OS 6-inch map as a circular enclosure (map dims. 47m). On the 2nd (1906) ed. map the monument is depicted with hachures indicating a quarry. According to Wheeler (OPW files 1957), 'the site marked as Arbour on the map is of no archaeological interest. He describes it as a 'quarry-hole with an ice-house inside and a tree-ring around it' (ibid.). Local information confirms the presence of an ice-house here until relatively recent times. This monument may be a tree-ring, though an earlier enclosure could have been utilised for this purpose. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011

Architectural heritage

• Deerpark House, house, 1840–1860 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached six-bay two-storey house, built c.1850, with pedimented advanced gable-fronted end two bays to north, lean-to verandah to other bays supported by rendered piers, and single-bay single-storey hipped-roofed extension to rear. Hipped slate roof, pitched to gable-front, having overhanging eaves, cast-iron rainwater goods and rendered chimneystack. Dressed limestone pediment to gable-front with carved stone brackets. Painted lined-and-ruled rendered walls throughout with dressed limestone plinth and plat-band at sill level. Square-headed window openings with moulded render surrounds, limestone sills to ground floor of advanced bays supported by decorative render brackets and timber sliding sash windows, nine-over-nine pane to advanced bays and one-over-one pane to first floor of other bays. Plat-band forms sills to first floor windows. Square-headed openings to ground floor of southern bays with timber French doors and glazed timber entrance door with over-lights and moulded render surrounds. Retains interior features. Outbuildings to site, that to north of house having hipped slate roof, rendered walls and chimneystack with decorative clay chimney pots. House sited at end of long avenue.
