Description
In pasture, on a gentle SW-facing slope; Excellent views E-SW. Oval area (dims. 40m N-S; 37m E-W) defined by bank (overall Wth 5.4m; Wth at top 1.75m; int. H 0.8m; ext. H 1.7m). Possible entrance gap (Wth 2.5m) at SSW. Fosse (overall Wth 6.05m; basal Wth 3.35m; D 0.5m) W-SSW is backfilled SSW-W. Interior has a gentle S-facing slope and an uneven surface. Description
Within interior of ringfort (TS061-016----), off-centre to E. Low profile circular area (diam. 3m) defined by bank (overall Wth 4.65m; Wth at top 2m; int. H 0.05m; ext. H 0.15m). Bank (overall Wth 8m; Wth at top 2m; int. H 0.15m; ext. H 0.4m) is best defined SW-SE, where it is raised to compensate for slope. Interior is level and grass covered. Description
In gently undulating pasture, on a steep SE-facing slope. Roughly circular area (dims. 28m NE-SW; c. 29m NW-SE) defined by low bank (overall Wth 5.5-7.7m; Wth at top 0.65-0.85m; int. H 0.45-0.95m; ext. H 1-1.2m) NE-NW; Not seen NW-NE due to dense overgrowth. Entrance gap (overall Wth 7m; basal Wth 4m) at SE. Fosse (overall Wth 4.7m; basal Wth 1.5m; D 0.3m) NE-SE and SW-N; small stream skirts SE-SW as depicted on latest edition OS 6-inch map. Fosse not seen N-NNE due to impenetrable growth of vegetation and is possibly backfilled at NNE. Outer bank (overall Wth 2.75m; Wth at top 1.3m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.35m) NE-SE is reduced to bank (overall Wth 1.9m; Wth at top 0.4m; int. H 1.1m; ext. H 0.65m) SW-NW. Interior is ungrazed with occasional whitethorn and has a dense growth of furze to E. Description
In improved pasture, on elevated area at top of a S-facing slope. No visible surface trace. According to Wheeler (16/04/1957) this was an oval area (dims. 180' N-S; 168' E-W) defined by a stoney bank (int. H 2'; ext. H 5'6”) SW-NW and a scarp (H 2'6”-3') NW-SW. Fosse (Wth 15') NW-NE and possible outer bank here also. Wheeler (ibid) suggests that interior may have been disturbed by later wall foundations within SW-quadrant. Description
Detached five-bay two-storey house over basement, built c. 1810, with central projecting porch and having flat-roofed two-bay two-storey extension to rear. Hipped slate skirt roof with rendered chimneystacks. Painted roughcast rendered walls with rendered plinth eaves and quoins. Square-headed window openings throughout, with replacement uPVC windows with plain render surrounds and limestone sills, having moulded cornices to front elevation. Porch has cut limestone cornice and moulded eaves course withsquare-headed window openings with replacement uPVC windows and square-headed timber panelled door, accessed by flights of limestone steps to doorway and former doorway in porch side elevations, having cast-iron railings. Segmental-headed inner door opening having moulded doorcase, paned sidelights, beaded cobweb fanlight and timber panelled door. Coursed rubble limestone masonry walls to yard with rubble limestone masonry piers. Multiple-bay single-storey rendered outbuilding to rear. Painted roughcast rendered walls to road entrance with ornate volute motifs terminating in square-profile rendered piers with ornate caps.
