  Description

  Situated on flat pasture in an upland area with a ravine and river immediately to the NE and a nearby ringfort (TN031-058) to the S. A semicircular area (diam. 17m NW-SE; 22m E-W) enclosed by an earth and stone bank (Wth 2.5-3.5m; int. H 1m; ext. H 3m) and wide flat-bottomed fosse (Wth 4m; D 2.5m) with a causewayed entrance (Wth 4.5m) at S. A steep-sided ravine forms the defensive element of the site from N to NE, elsewhere the site is protected by the bank.   Description

  Situated on high ground in an upland area overlooking a nearby ringfort (TN031-064) to the SE. A well-preserved ringfort consisting of a raised circular area (diam. 32m NW-SE) enclosed by an earthen bank (Wth 2.5-3.5m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 1m) reduced to a scarp in places with a possible entrance gap (Wth 4m) at SE. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. • TN031-063 Church
  Description

  Situated on the NW slope of a low hillock in an upland area. Kilnarath Church listed in the ecclesiastical taxation of the Diocese of Cashel in 1302 (Cal. doc. Ire, 5, 281). The Civil Survey of 1654-56 recorded that that upon the said lands 'stands the parish Church of Killnyragh' (Simington 1934, 192). In 1652 Cornelius Ryan was listed as the parish priest of Kilnarath Church (Millett 1988, 24). In 1840 the Ordnance Survey recorded that the site of the medieval parish church was 'no longer in existence and its site is occupied by a small Protestant Church now in ruins' (O'Flanagan 1930, 6). A rectangular apse-ended post-1700 C of I church (ext. dims. 8.5m N-S; 21.6m E-W; wall T 0.75m) which contains two large barrel-vaulted mortuary vaults of nineteenth-century date probably stands on the site of the medieval parish church. No other features are visible due to a dense cover of ivy on the walls of the church which is located in a large rectangular-shaped graveyard (TN031-063002-) containing eighteenth- and nineteenth-century headstones. In the graveyard there is an upright holed stone (TN031-063003-) possibly re-used as a grave-marker which could be a medieval threshold stone or socket stone for a timber pivot of the doorway belonging to the medieval church (pers. comm. • TN031-063001 Graveyard
  Description

  Situated on the NW slope of a low hillock in an upland area. Listed in the ecclesiastical taxation of the Diocese of Cashel in 1302 (Cal. doc. Ire., 5, 281). The ruins of a post-1700 C of I church stands on the site of the medieval church (TN031-063----) which is located in a large rectangular-shaped graveyard (approx. dims. 44m N-S x 60m E-W) containing eighteenth- and nineteenth-century headstones. In 1654-56 the one acre glebe of the medieval church was described as being 'situated close to the Churchyard of the said parish on the South west part thereof & fenced with a ditch' (Simington 1934, 395).   Description

  Situated on flat poorly drained land in an upland area with nearby ringforts (TN031-058, TN031-066, TN031-067) to the NW and SE respectively. A raised circular area (diam. 27.5m N-S; 24.5m E-W) enclosed by an earthen bank (Wth 2.8m; int. H 0.7m; ext. H 1.2m) and an external fosse (Wth 2.3m; D 0.4m) which was waterlogged at the time of visit. The bank is destroyed at E by an intersecting field fence on an E-W axis. No entrance feature visible.   Description

  No surface remains of any dwelling pre-1700 in area marked on 6" OS 6-inch map. Described in the OS field name books as New Ross Old house (O'Donovan et. al. 1840) which at that time had been replaced by a farmhouse and offices which were built on the site of the old house.
