• TN027-044 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on the NE-facing lower slope of a large hill, in rolling pasture. Depicted as a roughly circular enclosure on the 1st ed. (1843) OS 6-inch map, abutting a field boundary at S. Not indicated on the 1904 ed. though the S field boundary kinks out defining the former edge of the site. Although levelled the site is still discernible as a circular area (diam. 36.4m N-S; 41m E-W) defined by a flattened bank (Wth 10m; int. H 0.78; ext. H 0.3m). There is a dip towards the centre, with a gap in the bank in the NE quadrant which may indicate the former entrance. There is a suggestion of a fosse (Wth c. 4m) at N. • TN027-051 Moated site
  Description

  Situated on a N-facing slope in pasture, with a stream running through fosse at E from S to N. A rectangular-shaped area (c. 35m E-W; 47m N-S) enclosed by a bank (Wth 3.6m; int. H 0.77m; ext. H 2.4m), a wide, flat-bottomed fosse (Wth 6m; D 3m) and an outer bank (Wth 5m; ext. H 1.75m). The outer bank is most impressive at W and N. The interior slopes gently to the N. A leat cuts through the outer bank in the SW corner giving water access to fosse. The SE corner has been disturbed, the fosse being infilled at this point. • TN027-053 Enclosure
  Description

  This site is built into a steep NE-facing slope in pasture. Depicted as a circular enclosure on the 1st and latest ed. OS 6-inch maps. The site is enclosed by an earthen bank (Wth 3.8m; int. H 0.95m; ext. H 1.31m) and a narrow, steep-sided, U-shaped fosse (Wth 3.5m; D 0.55m). The interior slopes to the NE and has an undulating surface with the possible foundations of an internal structure. • TN027-054 Enclosure
  Description

  Situated on the NE-facing slope of a hill in pasture. Indicated on the 1st and latest ed. OS 6-inch maps as a small, circular enclosure with field boundaries abutting the site at E and W. According to the landowner there was a stone wall in the NE quadrant and an earthen bank elsewhere with a gap in bank in NW quadrant. Ash trees grew on bank. The site was levelled in 1970. The landowner thought it was a later feature, possibly a cattle shelter. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary.
