• WA029-042002 Burial ground
  Description

  Marked as a D-shaped graveyard (dims. c. 35m N-S; c. 40m E-W) with the straight edge at the W on the 1840 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, and situated in pasture on the S bank of the SE-NW Goish River, c. 1km E from its confluence with the River Blackwater and c. 60-100m from the river bank. This is a later prehistoric or Early Christian cemetery comprising a circular grass-covered area (diam. 34m E-W; 32m N-S) defined by a slight stone bank (Wth 2.7m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.6m) SW-NW, a low external scarp (H 0.2m) NW-E, and a scarp down to the interior (H 0.2m) E-SW. There is a notable mound (diam. 5m; H 0.0.2-0.6m) on the perimeter at NE. There is no fosse or recognisable entrance. The interior of the site, but not the perimeter, was investigated by R.A.S.Macalister (1935b), and the earliest features were two nearly parallel trenches or ditches (Wth c. 1.5m; D c. 0.7m) c. 6m apart, perhaps forming an enclosure (WA029-042007-) with a different centre to the visible enclosure. A large pit with iron slag (WA029-042008-) (diam. c. 3m; D c. 2.4m) in the interior might be recent. The ditches were overlaid by stony soils containing 52 inhumations, some possibly crouched, but most were extended with the head at W. At the W side of the enclosure the burials were overlaid by a stone-faced wall (Wth c. 1m; L c. 36m) with a stone-lined entrance (Wth c. 1m) which is the W edge of the enclosure on the 1840 map. The entrance through this wall was mistaken by Brash (1872-9, 4) for a cist (WA029-042005-), but there was no evidence of a church (WA029-042001-). Two ogham stones (WA029-042003-; WA029-042006-) that are built into this wall, and two fragments of ogham stones (WA021-042010-; WA029-042011-) found in excavation by MacAlister (ibid. 8) that are now in NMI were probably originally grave-markers from the cemetery.   Two ogham stones are built into a wall at the burial ground of Cill Tire at Dromore (WA029-042002-). This stone, recorded as 'slate, with conspicuous quartz veins' (1.32 x 0.51 x 0.13m converted from Macalister 1945), has been read as: COLLABOT MUCOI LUGA MAQI LOBACCONA by Macalister (1945, 262-3, no. 266).   Two ogham stones are built into the remnants of a wall at the cemetery of Cill Tire at Dromore (WA029-042002-). This stone (slate, 1.3 x 0.41 x 0.25m converted from Macalister 1945) was first recorded by Power (1909b, 79) as MEDUSI MACI LU and subsequently by Macalister (1935b, 11; 1945, 263-4, no. 267) as MEDUSI MACI LU on one angle, with MUCOI LUGA as a correction on another angle. (Moore 1999, no. 1486) This stone has been studied as part of the ‘Ogham in 3D’ project undertaken by the School of Celtic Studies, Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies.   One of three ogham stones from Cill Tire burial ground (WA029-042002-). This stone (1.42m x 0.30m x 0.28m) of coarse-grained slate and very brittle, is broken into four pieces and was found during excavation of the site by Macalister (1935b, 12). The inscription was initially read by him as RITUVVAS: he subsequently revised this as CATTUVIR (1945, vol. 1, 264). The stone is in the National Museum of Ireland (DU018-388----).   Description

  Detached twelve-bay single-storey thatched farmhouse with dormer attic, c.1820, retaining original aspect with single-bay single-storey flat-roofed advanced porch, and incorporating outbuilding range to south with square-headed carriageway. Pitched roof with reed thatch having rope work to ridge, and rendered chimney stacks. Limewashed random rubble stone walls with slight batter. Square-headed window openings with stone sills, timber lintels, and timber fittings. Square-headed door opening in advanced porch with cut-stone lintel over, and timber boarded door. Square-headed door openings to outbuilding range to south with timber lintels, and timber boarded doors. Set back from road in own grounds with courtyard to front (west).(ii) Attached three-bay two-storey rubble stone outbuilding, c.1870, to north with single-bay single-storey lean-to projecting bay to right ground floor. Pitched slate roof (lean-to to projecting bay) with clay ridge tiles, and remains of cast-iron rainwater goods on squared rubble stone eaves. Unpainted random rubble stone walls (limewashed to projecting bay) with lime mortar. Square-headed window openings with no sills, timber lintels, and timber fittings. Square-headed door opening with timber boarded door.(iii) Attached two-bay single-storey rubble stone outbuilding, c.1870, to south. Reroofed, c.1920. Pitched roof with replacement corrugated-iron, c.1920, iron ridge tiles, and no rainwater goods. Limewashed random rubble stone walls. Square-headed door opening with timber lintel, and timber boarded door.(iv) Detached three-bay two-storey rubble stone outbuilding, c.1870, to south with pair of elliptical-headed carriageways to ground floor. Pitched slate roof with clay ridge tiles, rendered coping, and remains of cast-iron rainwater goods. Unpainted random rubble stone walls (limewashed to part ground floor) with lime mortar. Pair of elliptical-headed carriageways to ground floor with squared rubble stone voussoirs, and timber fittings. Square-headed door opening to centre first floor approached by stone steps with lintel, and timber boarded door.(v) Detached two-bay two-storey rubble stone outbuilding, c.1870, to south-west.
